Sign up for June is now open! It will remain open until May 31st with pairs being made June 1st. All picks must be made by the 8th or one of us will make them for you.

Themes TBD

Rules:
Comment that you are IN before May 31st.
Give at least 3 recommendations (more is always better in my opinion) to your partner, at least 1 pick must fit a theme. (Bonus points if more do!)
Do your best to read one of the recs given to you and come back here and comment on it!

Remember, this is to introduce us all to new books and/or give us a push to read something we have been putting off.

Note, part of the fun of this challenge is finding books that fit the theme that you think your partner would enjoy. Please state why you are picking a book and make sure that at least ONE fits a theme

Hey all! I'm not feeling all that creative currently so instead of me thinking up themes I'd love it if everyone participating suggests a theme!

Laura ☾ | 873 comments June 8 - National Best Friends Day - a book featuring strong friendships?

message 6: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments 20th June is Fathers Day-a book featuring a father/child relationship?

message 8: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments Ah I skipped over the part where you asked for suggestions for participating peeps! No I don't think so, I'm still kind of stuck in this slump, I just thought I'd offer a suggestion.

message 9: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 6451 comments Mod
I'll still take the suggestion just wanted to be sure if you were in or not

Elena and Laura, with there just being the 3 of us lets all pick some for each other? This way we get a plethora of recommendations to choose from.
Going to wait a day or two and see if Elena has a theme in mind then I'll throw them up in the top post.

Anything in particular you are looking for this month Laura?

I am trying to not start any new series this month, so I'd prefer either standalones or series continuations if possible. Otherwise I am up for whatever!

message 14: by Elena (new)

Elena Granger | 1788 comments If it's not too late, I have one more theme with food :D June 2: National Rocky Road Day - let's read something with amazing deserts :D

And I'm also up for anything you recommend. The craziest - the merriest! :D

Though I might be a little bit late with the pick for you all. It's been yet again crazy at work and I have to work on Sat too and on Sun I'm going hiking :( So I'll try to squeeze some time next week to publish the picks :)

message 15: by Laura ☾ (new)

Laura ☾ | 873 comments I will try to make some picks for both of you soon!

I’m up for anything but Bonus points if it’s on my TBR!

message 16: by Laura ☾ (new)

Laura ☾ | 873 comments @Brittany for you I'd recommend the following:

Best Friends' Day

Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson - this did have a strong friendship theme and I loved this!

The Other Side of the Sky (The Other Side of the Sky, #1) by Amie Kaufman -I know you said you didn't want to start new series but this is planned as a duology and only the first book is out?

Also, whatever the next Kate Daniels book is for you? Not sure where you'd said you'd read up to!

National Rocky Road Day

The Flatshare by Beth O'Leary - this did include several desserts if my memory serves me right

Bonus pick If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio - a standalone that I greatly enjoyed!

@Elena for you the following:

Best Friends' Day
Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson - same reasoning as above

National Rocky Road Day
Love's Recipe by Mila Nicks cute rom-com that definitely made me hungry

Bonus picks
You Deserve Each Other by Sarah Hogle Wicked Saints (Something Dark and Holy, #1) by Emily A. Duncan Nevernight (The Nevernight Chronicle, #1) by Jay Kristoff I loved all of these so I'm throwing them in as bonus picks!

I'll get yours up later today or tomorrow

Yay! You should really enjoy the series.

message 23: by Elena (new)

Elena Granger | 1788 comments @Laura here are you picks from me :)

@Brittany I'll try to add yours tomorrow. Sorry I don't have enough time for both :((

Friendship:
Spoiler Alert (Spoiler Alert, #1) by Olivia Dade - it has a line with friendship (not to spoil I won't write which one). I'm currently reading this book and loving it. Very sweet rom-com.

The Name of the Wind (The Kingkiller Chronicle, #1) by Patrick Rothfuss - this book is amazing and has not only friendship line but much much more!

Scythe (Arc of a Scythe, #1) by Neal Shusterman - the first book of the series is the best :) and also has a strong friendship/love line.

National Rocky Road Day:
Love & Gelato (Love & Gelato, #1) by Jenna Evans Welch - I agree with Brittany on this one. Indeed it's a very sweet, warm and sunny rom-com.

Bonus picks:
The Kiss Quotient (The Kiss Quotient, #1) by Helen Hoang - I'm a little bit into rom-coms at this period of time and my recs are kinda affected. But this one is so cuuuute!

Blood Heir (Blood Heir Trilogy #1) by Amélie Wen Zhao - the cover and the description caught my attention. It sounds like a pretty good read.

message 24: by Laura ☾ (new)

Laura ☾ | 873 comments Oooh I might try to get to spoiler alert from your picks! I’ve been meaning to pick that up!

message 25: by Elena (new)

Elena Granger | 1788 comments Thank you both for the amazing picks! I'm going to start with Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson and proceed with Three Mages and a Margarita (The Guild Codex Spellbound, #1) by Annette Marie as both sound very interesting and I really need to drop out of this crazy rom-com addiction :DDD

message 26: by Elena (new)

Elena Granger | 1788 comments @Brittane finally I have your picks :)

Friendship:
The Name of the Wind (The Kingkiller Chronicle, #1) by Patrick Rothfuss - for exactly the same reason as I've already covered in Laura's recs. It's just amazing!

The Girl with Ghost Eyes by M.H. Boroson - this book is great and has a pretty unusual friendship line :)

Assassin's Apprentice (Farseer Trilogy, #1) by Robin Hobb - feels a bit long but good and also has an unusual friendships

And some bonus picks:
The Wizards of Once (The Wizards of Once, #1) by Cressida Cowell - a magical one, perfect for the slumps and the days when your mood is not at the highest

Kingdom of the Blazing Phoenix (Rise of the Empress, #2) by Julie C. Dao - the second is definitely better than the first and worth reading :)

The Villa in Italy by Elizabeth Edmondson - a good classics, perfect for summer

Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas This Savage Song (Monsters of Verity, #1) by Victoria Schwab - these two books have nothing in common, just both are extremely good and atmospheric

Thanks for the picks Elena!
I actually have The Wizards of Once on audio so I may get to that this month. Otherwise I guess its time to read Kingdom of the Blazing Phoenix! Thanks for the push!

message 30: by Elena (new)

Elena Granger | 1788 comments I haven't started Sorcery yet but I think I'm going to start this weekend :) So let's BR it?

message 31: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 6451 comments Mod
I just started another audio but I can start that one next. Ill just be a few days behind you!

message 32: by Laura ☾ (new)

Laura ☾ | 873 comments Yaaay!

I finished Spoiler Alert and it was really cute even though it included my least favourite trope which is the MCs just not communicating properly from the get go! They did get better as it went along

I've also started Three Mages and A Margarita but it's too early to say much at this stage!

message 33: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments Brittany wrote: "I just started another audio but I can start that one next. Ill just be a few days behind you!"

Let me know when you guys start, I've been meaning to read Sorcery of Thorns for ages, so I might jump on it with you!

message 34: by Elena (new)

Elena Granger | 1788 comments @Brittany @Jo I'm starting on Monday (I just decided to read Starsight this weekend).

message 35: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments Ah okay cool, I'll jump in with you on Monday then Elena!

message 36: by Laura ☾ (new)

Laura ☾ | 873 comments Ok so I finished Three Mages and A Margarita and it was super fun! hehe

message 37: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 6451 comments Mod
Monday is good. I should be able to jump in by wednesday. Ill make a thread.

Laura isn't it so fun?! The rest are better too. I love Ezra.

message 38: by Laura ☾ (new)

Laura ☾ | 873 comments Ezra is great but I also like the sass levels generally 😂

message 39: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 6451 comments Mod
Oh there is so much sass in these books. I love all the characters. I do still recommend the reading order but you can read all of spellbound and then go back and read demonized.

message 40: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 6451 comments Mod
So I'm still listening to Flatshare. Enjoying it but I just got to (view spoiler)

message 41: by Laura ☾ (new)

Laura ☾ | 873 comments Yes it was super unnecessary !

Btw I’m ploughing through the Guild Codex series hahaha and I’m reading them in reading order!

message 42: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 6451 comments Mod
Right? Like I was super enjoying it and then that happened and I stopped.
Yay!! How far are you? And good for the reading order it makes things better I think

Hahahah they're quick to get through and i've had about 10 days off work

message 47: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 6451 comments Mod
That would do it!

I finally finished the Flatshare. I did enjoy it but just wish that last part of drama had been skipped.

message 48: by Laura ☾ (new)

Laura ☾ | 873 comments I feel like that’s the case with a lot of romance books lately

message 49: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 6451 comments Mod
Sadly I agree. Its why it frustrates me so much. It occurs to often that its just added in there for no real reason.

message 50: by Laura ☾ (new)

Laura ☾ | 873 comments YES! especially with some authors like Christina Lauren
