When You’re Not Reading a Cozy

Set in 1888 New York City. I am about 1/3 through it. It is okay. Not finding anything special another gilded age book set in New York. I friend liked it a lot so I hope it picks up
Finished two non-cozies in the last 24 hours:
* So You Think You're a Bookworm by Jo Hoare — Short and witty.
* Growth of the Soil by Knut Hamsun — The book that won him the Nobel Prize. I started listening to this one last autumn, then set it aside when I got busy over the holidays and never seemed to get back to it. I finally started listening to it again last week and am glad to finally finish it.

Hope it picks up for you too Alice.
I also have this out from our library but haven’t started it yet. Tend to enjoy period mysteries so hopefully it lives up to your friend’s recommendation.

I gave that one 4 stars Alice, and read #2 about a week ago and loved it. That one was 5 stars :)

Great to know, Brenda! Very excited to read it now 🤗

This is a change for Rollins although he did write fantasy early in his career. It's an epic fantasy. hat brings excitement, danger, and suspense to an adventurous journey that includes some unusual allies and some common enemies. With this first book in the Moon Fall series, he introduces the four main characters and does a fantastic job of building a world that is unique.

Finished two more non-cozies in the past week:
* Bel Canto by Ann Patchett — Read for the PopSugar reading challenge, a book that has won the Women’s Prize for Fiction. Good, but the last chapter about wrecked me.
* Hunger by Knut Hamsun — One of the Classics Group’s October selections. Did not like this one much. The narrator is completely unsympathetic, and I couldn’t wait for it to be over. I listened to a free audiobook on YouTube.

Have this one waiting in my bedroom book pile. Glad you enjoyed it Alice. You’ve motivated me to start reading my copy 😊

sounds good
Finished listening to His Last Bow by Arthur Conan Doyle today. Alas, it does not fit any of my challenges.

Isn't that annoying!!

It’s been years since I read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, but I loved it. It’s on my list of books I’d like to reread.

I love the Deadwood series. I'm only up to book 5. I think I'm overdue to listen to another one!

Heather could please check and flag message 284 also. Thanks!

That’s the post I flagged. We have to leave the post in place for GR to look at, but I kicked the spammer out of the group so she can’t post here again.

Which is the one time you actually appreciate the change GR made last year, allowing an individual to only post three new topics in a given time, but it doesn’t prevent them from hitting existing topics and it can be an inconvenience to moderators refreshing popular discussions or setting up new ones.
That was a major frustration in the PopSugar Challenge group last year, when they could only post three new topics (out of 50) every couple hours. This year they’ve started to get ahead of the system by setting them up now, so they can go back and edit the topics when the list comes out in December. Smart women there!

The author brings plenty of action and suspense to this Christian crime thriller that’s set in and around Seattle, Washington. Overall, this was an edge-of-seat chase that kept me full engaged and was riveting, intriguing, and thrilling, and has the hint of a future romance.
