I am reading now also. It is really intriguing, has a dry sense of humor I enjoy and I cannot wait to find our what happened to Joy!

Anyone else read both and do you feel the same?

I wouldn't call it upbeat. Very character driven and it's hard to explain but I enjoyed it but definitely not upbeat.

Spent three hours this afternoon alternately reading and listening to Carmilla by J. Sheridan Le Fanu, a vampire story that predates Dracula by twenty-five years. Recommended.

I read it a six or seven years ago on someone's recommendation and I agree, if you love vampire stories you must read Carmilla.
