Susan | 986 comments Are you a once-is-enough kind of reader, or are you a rereader? I was surprised years ago to hear a well-known writer say he never reread books. He explained since there are so many good books to read, he preferred to spend his time reading new ones instead of revisiting books he’d already read. It makes sense, but I personally love to reread a good book. What about you?

message 2: by Rebecka (last edited Oct 23, 2021 06:10AM) (new)

Rebecka (hoppeduponbooks) | 178 comments Oh I do reread. If it is a good book it needs to be loved ands read many times. Some books I have read so many times that I needed to get a new copy of the book because it was almost falling apart. (example. Jane Austen - Pride and predjudice)

message 3: by Lena (new)

Lena | 364 comments I just recently started to re-read. I've re-read my first book in Sept 2021. Prior I never re-read. I felt there are so many books I didn't want to spend time re-reading. My opinion has since changed. :-)

message 4: by Dana (new)

Dana Cristiana (silvermoon1923) | 57 comments I love to re-read books I loved from the bottom of my heart and soul, especially when I miss that specific world.

message 5: by Eswee42 (new)

Eswee42 | 31 comments I do reread, but only a couple of books. Those are also the only books I keep in my library. I love how you get sucked in deeper and deeper into a book as you come to know it. A second read can be totally different from the first one, as can the third for that matter. We change during time, so we see and notice new things. That's why I love rereading favorites.

message 6: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 4 comments i reread .. but only a select few

message 7: by Pachy (new)

Pachy Pedia (pachypedia) | 111 comments I reread a lot!

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 1435 comments I am a huge re-reader. One perk of having a bad memory. I enjoy re-reading favorite series especially, some multiple times. I don't reread on read-a-thons for some reason for the most part though. No re-reads planned for this weekend.

message 9: by Susy (new)

Susy (susysstories) | 2288 comments I only reread if (unexpectedly) a series gets new books (I usually wait to start reading a series until it's complete). There are too many books out there already waiting for me lol

This happened to my ppb copy of Pride and Prejudice, too! Such a delightful story

So many books, so little time! Hope you enjoy your re-reading, Lena

Yes, I love rereading my favorites, too. Any particular books you recommend for rereading?

message 13: by Jamie (new)

Jamie Barringer (Ravenmount) (ravenmount) | 950 comments Mod
I only reread a few books, and those I usually reread a lot. I have 2 Chronicles of Narnia books in my TBR this readathon that I've reread over 20 times. Mostly though when I finish books I hand them off to my brother or sister or leave them on a community free shelf, and rarely revisit them.

Susy (susysstories) | 2288 comments Susy wrote: "I only reread if (unexpectedly) a series gets new books (I usually wait to start reading a series until it's complete). There are too many books out there already waiting for me lol"

Exception: A Christmas Carol which I reread every December :D

message 15: by SadieReadsAgain (new)

SadieReadsAgain (sadiestartsagain) | 157 comments I never really reread, until this year where I set myself a challenge to reread previously 5* books. I've loved all of them again second time around, and I'm a convert. Though, only as an occasional thing...too many books out there to spend too much time on revisiting!

message 16: by Pasty Hag (new)

Pasty Hag | 89 comments I love re-reading books! I prefer to only purchase books I've already read and know that I love and will want to re-read. Sometimes I'll get in the mood just to read a certain favorite passage and it's nice to have the ability to turn to a certain part of a book and experience it, like a movie.

message 17: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (morr_books) | 116 comments I mostly do not reread. However, I will reread books if I love them like "Anne of Green Gables", Jane Austen's novels, Agatha Christie books, etc. I probably reread one book a year.

I love that sense of getting deeper into the world of a book, too. And noticing new things. Of course, there have been times when the new me was disappointed by the old book, but that doesn’t happen too often

Susan | 986 comments Vero wrote: "I reread only books I really love - I just finished rereading Anne of Green Gables the other day. I don't reread if I forget what happens in a first book that I just liked and want to read a sequel..."

Kindred spirits! That is such a good book, and I do read it a little differently when I was a little girl than I do now. Still love it, but have a little more perspective.

Rereading a series when a new book comes out! I don’t usually either

message 20: by Nona (new)

Nona | 138 comments I do some rereading, but there are so many books on my TBR that's it's tough to do too often.

A reread of a favorite book or series is a great way to get out of a reading slump.

I'm currently rereading the Murderbot Dairies and they are even more fun for me the second time.

message 21: by Nikki (new)

Nikki (readbynight) | 6 comments I selectively reread because there are so many books I want to read but some are too good to not reread. I also love visiting books later in life to see how I changed

Definitely a perk of having a bad memory ;). I never reread for readathons either. Not sure why exactly

message 25: by Kate (new)

Kate | 643 comments I have a handful of books that I re-read from time to time. The Animals of Farthing Wood is one of them.

I am currently re-reading Harry Potter as I read them all as they came out but wanted to go through the entire series again once I knew what would happen and how it all fit together. I'm currently re-reading Deathly Hallows.

Series can be a challenge, can’t they? So often the new books build on the previous books, and it’s hard to remember all the details.

I don’t know why I’ve never thought of doing a reread for a Readathon, but will have to remember next time. I love the Narnia series, too, but I think you might have a record for rereading there

A Christmas Carol tradition! I have a wonderful audiobook version read by **Tim Curry** and love to listen to it each year.

message 30: by Daisey (new)

Daisey | 80 comments I don't reread a lot, but I do love to reread favorites. I also like to reread books that I feel I can better appreciate now as an adult than I did when I first read them.

Agree with Daisy. As I change, my reading practice changes.

I reread for one reasons most of all:

I belong to two groups year-in/year-out. One is a classics group. So sometimes for purposes of group participation, I find myself rereading books. Often I find that when I last read a particular book that I had not yet had the experience/maturity to understand this book in this way too -or- to understand in a completely new way.

One of the joys of having your own library of favorites is revisiting whenever you want. I sometimes just reread a passage or chapter , too, although it has a way of leading to more… ;)

I like rereading all those, Sarah. With Agatha Christie, if I wait long enough, I forget whodunnit and it’s like a new book

Love how you put this “some are too good to not reread”. And if you’ve read all the books by a favorite author, it’s the only way left to experience their writing

I was afraid this discussion would be dangerous to my TBR. Lol. The Animals of Farthing Woods looks lovely and I’m going to see if my library has it.

Sometimes a book you revisit as an adult is like a wholly different book! When I read David Copperfield as a kid, I thought it was written by another kid and was a true story ;)

I’m in a classics group, too, Cynda, and really enjoy it. The group is just getting ready to read Dracula, but I read it with another group last year, and it just seems too soon to reread it. I’ll probably read the discussions to see what folks think, though.

message 41: by Lynnette (new)

Lynnette | 324 comments Rarely reread, but I do reread the same book every year: Better by Atul Gwande

message 42: by Sulan (new)

Sulan | 51 comments I kinda agree with that writer, I almost never reread. There are some times when I do but they're rare

message 43: by M (new)

M (masanobu) | 39 comments I very easily forget books so I'm definitely a rereader even if I don't do it very often. In fact, I'm rereading Locke & Key this readathon.

message 44: by Catsalive (new)

Catsalive | 182 comments I re-read my favourites: Terry Pratchett, Georgette Heyer, Dick Francis, Agatha Christie, etc.
I try to get it out of the house if I don't think I'll read it again, otherwise in a couple of years time I may find myself reading it again😹

message 45: by Paige (new)

Paige (paesh10) | 12 comments I’m definitely a re-reader. I tend to listen to and watch things again when I really like them. For books, it’s usually when it’s a top fave. I’ve read HP a few times, the Host multiple times, and twilight too. I’m about to re-read the Folk of the Air series after falling deeply in love with it last year! I wanted to take a break from it though before I did. I also re-read something when I know I missed a bunch. I’m re-reading Six of Crows for that very reason!

Yes, The Host is one of my faves ever! Read it 2 times and I plan on doing it for the third.
