Boy! Am I behind.

I'm reading Ceremony by Leslie Marmon Silko Ceremony and, as soon as I can figure out how to tell Libby that I don't want to read that book right now, but prefer to listen to a book, I will be listening to Paris to the Moon by Adam Gopnik Paris to the Moon

Antonia (toniclark) | 70 comments I've been on a long reading hiatus (very unusual for me) and then it became a reading slump, in which I tried several novels and couldn't settle on one. What broke the awful spell was "The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox" by Maggie O'Farrell — not a new book, but new to me. Loved it! I followed that up with Elizabeth Benedict's "Almost," which I liked okay, but not a lot. And then read Sally Rooney's new novel, "Beautiful World, Where Are You," which I loved. I've read her previous two novels and thought this was much better. Lots of depth, interesting characters, great dialogue — though I didn't always find the characters' actions entirely believable. And sometimes, I so wanted to tell them what to do. Currently reading "The Magician's Assistant," an old one by Ann Patchett. I know I read it years ago and liked it, but I don't remember anything in it so far (!) and am having a hard time sticking with it this time around.

Miriam Murcutt | 15 comments Recently finished reading Bad Blood by John Carreyrou - uncovering the truth behind Elizabeth Holmes, her company Theranos, and her fraudulent claims about her invention of a medical device that could perform a whole range of blood tests using a single drop of blood.

My review says:
Investigative journalism at its best. Non-fiction that reads like fiction. Well-researched, well-written account of the drama and deceit of the Silicon Valley startup, Theranos. A scandal featuring the endless lies and machinations of Elizabeth Holmes, whose apparent charisma and self-belief bamboozled investors who were old enough and should have been wise enough to spot a scam artist when she smiled at them. Worse still, Holmes didn't give a damn that lives were at stake in her ambition to become the next Steve Jobs. A frightening tale of immorality and hubris.

Miriam Murcutt | 15 comments Just finished 'Lonesome Dove'. Took a couple of days to recover from that wild west cattle drive from Texas to Montana with Larry McMurtry. But now off my horse, and now progressing along the 'Lincoln Highway' with Amor Towles.

Julie M (woolyjooly) | 314 comments Just finished "Small Fry" the memoir by Lisa Brennan Jobs, published in 2018. And skimmed through "Doom" by Niall Ferguson. (Boomerang!) The latter was due back at the library, but I saw the author/historian interviews on CNN awhile back and was intrigued by his take on current events.
