I can't say why I enjoy Murakami's books so much. I'm not always a fan of magical realism, dreamscapes and unresolved stories. But somehow they work in his books. This book tells the story of a young man who is part of a group of 5 friends in high school. He is the only one who goes away for college. When he comes home, his friends have cut him off and refuse to talk to him but nobody tells him why. He goes through a number of spaces in the next few years before finding out the truth. The book is about relationships and coming of age and about how we see ourselves vs. how others see us.
