*One of those contemporary books tagged classics multiple times". Don't really understand the tagging all the time, but obviously people think this will become a classic, which I agree with.
For some reason, this was my first Ann Patchett book. And it will most certainly not be my last, it was great!
A character study following the two siblings, Danny and Maeve, through decades of their lives. They grew up in The Dutch House, but ultimately the house didn’t have that much to do with the story as I thought given the title of the book. An intimate portrayal of a dysfunctional family, with a distant father, a mother who abandoned them, and the “evil” stepmother to come.
But most importantly about how the siblings supported each other through life, when the grown-ups were failing, and the love and the friendship that they shared where Maeve basically were the care giver to her little brother her whole life. Great storytelling indeed.
I listened to the audio narrated by Tom Hanks, which was a pure joy. He has a calm voice very suitable for this story. Always love a good character study, and this did not disappoint.
