Since the physical is still somewhere in my room, I will also be slow to catch up. I'll try to find it tonight/tomorrow morning.

Totally fine! I'm planning to go up to 21 this week and then I'll be done until next week at some point lol
I started this yesterday! So, once I catch up on my other BR comments and reviews - I'll jump back into this!

Yeah, the marriage doesn't seem fun but maybe she can use it to her advantage?

Seriously, my brain is turning into pudding right now. So many things were revealed and I'm in shock.

Glad you like it, I loved it! Looking forward to your thoughts! :)

Interesting! :) The author wrote notes at end describing what she gout from the original, and where she had to make it completely up. I think (view spoiler) was in the original as well.
At the end there is also a good explanation about the different Ramayana from the author - hope your edition has it too, it was really interesting to read!

Considering I have been brought up Hindu one might think I would know our religious texts but I am so clueless! It is interesting to read a story where I finally may find out why Kaikeyi banished Rama…He hasn’t even been born yet in the book though. I’ll definitely look up the parts you mentioned, it would help with the understanding of the book :)

Though I believe she took a lot of liberty, because there wasn't much in the original about Kaykeyi. I'll keep reading your comments, it is interesting to have the perspective of someone from the culture about it! I struggled with the names... :P

Yeah!! Apart from she being an evil step mom and banishing Rama, I have never heard anything about her in stories from my grandma. I am loving this entirely new perspective and this might be the first mythology book I am loving wholeheartedly (although I do understand why it might come across as offensive to some!)

For Hindus, it is the most religious text that is out there honestly and people read Ramayana for peace and calm mind, it is sacred for all so I am surprised that this book even exists!

Oh, wow! Now I am also surprised by this book's existence!
I guess some people might take it as bad as some Catholics took the Dan Brown book in the 2000s... (I can say it, I was a practicing Catholic then! ;) )
I was not convinced by Ravana's characterization either by the way, he just changes completely at the end, and I don't think it was done well (one of the only negatives for me)
“I was born on the full moon under an auspicious constellation, the holiest of positions—much good it did me.”
So begins Kaikeyi’s story. The only daughter of the kingdom of Kekaya, she is raised on tales about the might and benevolence of the gods: how they churned the vast ocean to obtain the nectar of immortality, how they vanquish evil and ensure the land of Bharat prospers, and how they offer powerful boons to the devout and the wise. Yet she watches as her father unceremoniously banishes her mother, listens as her own worth is reduced to how great a marriage alliance she can secure. And when she calls upon the gods for help, they never seem to hear.
Desperate for some measure of independence, she turns to the texts she once read with her mother and discovers a magic that is hers alone. With this power, Kaikeyi transforms herself from an overlooked princess into a warrior, diplomat, and most favored queen, determined to carve a better world for herself and the women around her.
But as the evil from her childhood stories threatens the cosmic order, the path she has forged clashes with the destiny the gods have chosen for her family. And Kaikeyi must decide if resistance is worth the destruction it will wreak—and what legacy she intends to leave behind.
A stunning debut from a powerful new voice, Kaikeyi is a tale of fate, family, courage, and heartbreak—of an extraordinary woman determined to leave her mark in a world where gods and men dictate the shape of things to come.
