I think Savannah was a quick study like her grandmother. She listened to Ken when he gave her instructions because she knew she was out of her depths in this situation. She was smart enough to try to lead the bad guys away from Ken when she heard them in the jungle.
Before the trip Savannah was trying to be the daughter her parents wanted her to be. During the trip she became the woman she really is, and she did show some defiant Rose traits.
