Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14234 comments Feel free to make a copy of the Bingo grid for yourself. On your own copy:

You can color/highlight the squares as you fill them.
You can make a 2nd sheet for your planning.
Share with others.
Whatever...

Links to genre pages are for help only. You can use MPG, shelved X times, lists as fit your needs.

Valerie Brown | 3270 comments Of course, it's me with my obtuse questions!

In the simplest example - if I read and claim 5 books in the 'B' column do I then claim the 50 point bonus? Do I then do that for every 'bingo' claimed?

Or, is the 50 point bonus based on the usual 25 square bingo card? So, if we read more than 25 books there will be no more bonuses...?

Yes! You've got it.

Shannon SA (shannonsa) | 6 comments For scoring,
Books 10.1 - 10.10 = 10 pts
Books 15.11 - 15.20 = 20 pts
So it's 10 points each for the first 10 books read
Then 20 points each for the next 10 books read
Am I correct?

Sorry, no. The tasks numbered 15 are scored as 15 points. All of the book claims are numbered according to their point value.

Coralie | 2760 comments Now you have me really confused. What counts as 10.1, 10.2 etc?

message 8: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (last edited May 15, 2022 05:00PM) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14234 comments Coralie wrote: "Now you have me really confused. What counts as 10.1, 10.2 etc?"

Book claims.

10.1 is your first book
10.2 is your 2nd book, etc. laid out in the How To post.

It doesn't matter for which square you have read. I'm sorry if calling them "tasks" above confused things.

message 9: by Coralie (new)

Coralie | 2760 comments Isn't that what Shannon was saying?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14234 comments Coralie wrote: "Isn't that what Shannon was saying?"

It may have been, but I read her post that 15.11-15.20 are scored as 20 points when they will be scored as 15 points. Maybe I was being too literal.

message 11: by Shannon SA (new)

Shannon SA (shannonsa) | 6 comments Hi Coralie and Elizabeth, I made a mistake saying 20 pts for the "next 10 books read", should indeed have said 15 points.
So the following is correct?
10 points each for the first 10 books read
15 points each for the next 10 books read
and so on?

message 12: by Bea (new)

Bea OK...let me get this straight in my head.

Summer is just BINGO. No separate 10, 15, 20 point grids like usual.

In looking at the description of points, I notice that the Book Claims for books 31-50 covers 20 books. All 20 earn 30 points, but the next 10 (Book Claims for 51- 60) jumps to 50 points. Did you mean to have a 40 point section?

message 13: by Vaidehi (new)

Vaidehi | 14 comments Hello~

I have never played Bingo challenge before, but I am very excited to participate in the challenge. I have a question. I am not usually reading books with more than 500 pages. How is the scoring for the books less than 500 pages? I searched FAQ and other threads but i couldn't find anything.

Thank you!

Yes. The points aren’t necessarily upgraded for every 10 books, but as you read the points do get greater. Since you can use a square only once, you will be rewarded as it gets later in the game and you have fewer options.

Hi Vaidehi - welcome to Reading with Style.

The points for the books you read are as in the How To Play post, starting with 10 points for each of the first 10 books.

This summer season there is a 5-point bonus for reading books 500+ pages and another 5-point bonus for reading books that were published in 1997 and earlier. There is no penalty for reading shorter books or newer books. Most of us have a backlog of reading material and this summer will be a way to get after those we've neglected.

Does this help?

Connie G (connie_g) | 1902 comments Can we assume that it's OK to claim a genre (such as Historical Fiction) if it's listed on the book's main page? Can we lock in a genre since Goodreads sometimes makes the genre lists shorter?

Yes, and MPG is obvious, but the links are for help only. We're not requiring the MPG this season. The book might be shelved X times (or only on a list) and not be in that section and you are still welcome to claim it for one of the genre squares.

We're hoping what this season does for all of you is to get to those books you've been longing to read and don't seem to fit in previous seasons.

Joanna (walker) | 2293 comments So, if I read all 15 of the B tasks, I could claim that as three separate BINGOs, correct?

My score would look like:

10.1 - 10 pts. - B1
10.2 - 10 pts. - B2
...
10.5 - 10 pts. - B5
BINGO - 50pts - B1, B2, B3, B4, B5
10.6 - 10 pts - B6
10.7 - 10 pts - B7
...
10.10 - 10 pts - B10
BINGO - 50 pts - B6, B7, B8, B9, B10
15.1 - 15 pts - B11
and so on

Yes.

Your bingo claim is just like getting a finishers bonus for reading 5 books, except that you have to choose your books as if you had a bingo card and played those numbers.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14234 comments Owlette wrote: "RwS Bingo is going to be fun! What is the verdict on leading articles (a, an) for the tasks like "First word of title starts with a letter in..."?"

We hope it will be fun!

The first letter must be in the word. A and An will work in Beards and Orphan, but The will not work for any of them.

message 26: by Owlette (new)

Owlette | 715 comments I think I misphrased my question. Example: For a (hypothetical) title like The Big Bear, would it work for Beards? Or is the first word "The" and thus, doesn't work?

The as a first word (and therefore the letter T) will not work for any of the first letter squares. For those squares the absolute first letter of the title will need to be in the words.

The Home-Maker"

We will accept that as one word - so a 2-word title.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14234 comments Owlette wrote: "Okay - thanks. (Planning in progress, as you can tell.)"

Yes! I found many of the books I hoped to read fit multiple squares. It was sometimes like that game where you move the tiles around.

Thank you!
Yeah, I get it now. I can read any book > 100 pages and claim it as 10.1 as Joanna said. And when I get a Bingo, I get extra points for that. Also, if applied, I get other points as you mentioned. I think for now, I understand.

I'll start collecting the books~~~

message 39: by Deedee (new)

Deedee | 2282 comments OK a very basic question -- for five books in a column, for example, the "B" column, do they have to be consecutive (B1 - B2 - B3 - B4 -B5) or can they be any random 5 books from the B column (B1 - B3 - B7 - B9 - B10)? And, if the five have to be consecutive, does it have to be B1 - B2 - B3 - B4 -B5, B6 thru B10, etc., or can it be B3 - B4 - B5 - B6 - B7? Thanks

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14234 comments Deedee wrote: "OK a very basic question -- for five books in a column, for example, the "B" column, do they have to be consecutive (B1 - B2 - B3 - B4 -B5) or can they be any random 5 books from the B column (B1 -..."

No, books you read do not have to be in adjacent squares, either from the column or across the columns. And please note that even if you choose to read for B1 through B5, you do not need to read them in order. Then if not all in one column but across columns, you could, for example, read for the O column, then the I Column, then G, etc. You might choose to read 9 books before claiming a bingo (4 in B column, 2 in I column and one each in N, G and O columns, for example).

"Squares for either option do not need to be adjacent to one another and books may be read in any order, but you may not repeat squares."

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14234 comments For everyone:

When playing bingo in real life (does anyone have a real life?) the numbers on your card are somewhat random. That is how we're playing this game. Yes, your real life bingo card has only 25 squares. You can get another card for another 25 squares! (And a third, for you reading rabbits.)

OK Thanks! Makes planning a bit easier :)

Now another question:
For the squares that say "First letter in Title", do leading words like "A" or "The" count? so for The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane, is the leading letter "T" or "P"?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14234 comments The first letter in title is that absolute first letter in title. A/An will work in Beards and Orphan. The does not work for any of them, so your example cannot be used for Orphan.

Anika | 2796 comments Oh. My. Goodness! Today is the first day I’ve had time to take a close look at the rules for Bingo and I am so excited!!! Also loving that Graphic Novels are a go and no Lexile requirement (I can finally read some Christie I’ve been shelving since they were low Lex!).

For the aged task, are we going by authors born in 1947 and prior or do i need to find the exact birthdate to make sure they’re officially 75 (I’m considering Larry Watson)?

Glad you are excited, Anika! We like to create some fun laid back summer reading adventures.

We will use the same premise for our aged box as for our aged style. We only track birth years, not month/date. So, 1947 should be good to go this summer. :)

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14234 comments Kathleen (itpdx) wrote: "Subtitles? Is Valiant Ambition: George Washington, Benedict Arnold, and the Fate of the American Revolution a two word title?"

Yes. This season all title tasks apply to title only, whether or not there is a subtitle. Or, said a different way: subtitles allowed, but tasks apply to title only.
