This is a discussion thread for The Wingfeather Saga by Andrew Peterson for those who have read the book(s). What did you like about it? What did you dislike? Who was your favorite character? Your least favorite? Is there anything you'd love to know other people's opinion(s) on? Feel free to discuss anything pertaining to this book. It's also okay to include spoilers in this thread.

Please note that while this is a book by a Christian author, not all of the threads in the Fantasy Books topic are for books by Christian authors and may not be appropriate for all readers. However, honest dialogue and discussion is important. Just because there is a thread for a book doesn't mean that it's recommended or endorsed by F&F.

Em Kalmar rant:
was anyone else mildly irritated by Kalmar the whole time but you couldn't actually blame him for anything (other than running away in NOBE but even then he got his consequence) and you just want him to apologize just once at least to Janner but for what you're not sure so you're just left with this vague sense of guilt and frustration and shame and exasperation and it just makes you relate to Janner all the more and it's complicated and then in the end Janner is a better nobler person than you?? just me? it hurts okay?

It's been a little while since I read these [read: cried through these], but yes, I think Kalmar was supposed to be the brat we got frustrated with and Janner the hero. However, I loved how Peterson grew him up as the series went on and how he got to the point of being willing to be the one who had to die to save the others even though he wasn't.

And yes, how it hurt! I read these aloud with my son, and we were shocked at the death of Janner! I bawled and he got teary, which doesn't often happen since I cry enough for both of us. I was uncharacteristically satisfied after finishing the epilogue, though. I usually want an author to spell it all out for me, but I was satisfied that he would be brought back. I had to believe that. :)

Jaiden Phillips | 1597 comments Not, really. I never really got irritated at Kalmar. I felt where he was coming from, he didn't want to be forced to be something he didn't want to be...I loved both Kalmar and Janner the whole ride through, they were both relatable in different ways and that what made the story more real to me. thier relationship was really real too, they loved each other but sometimes they didn't agree and maybe they did things they regretted but Kalmar's actions just made the story so much more raw and real! I loved the ending (though I bawled my eyes out in the floor ) it was beautiful! and how the boys become soo much closer in the end was made so much more beautiful because of what Kalmar had done, it was sooo gorgeous! <3

Raw. Yes, a great word to describe these books.

At first I didn't get why Peterson made the birth order expectations so stringent. But now I see how he was showing us that we are to be who GOD made us to be. We don't get to choose our own way, our own destiny. And while that seems too restrictive to many (as Kalmar did in the beginning with his role as king), God knows that we are happier, more peaceful, and content people when we follow Him and let Him be the composer and conductor of our lives. Kalmar and Janner finally got that, and it truly was beautiful.
