RULES
RULES and ANNOUNCEMENTS
About this Challenge
◈ Starts on 14 November and runs for FIVE weeks (ending 18 December)
◈ The start / end time for each round will be 9pm UK time
◈ The team with the highest points at the end of the game wins!
◈ Each week the mods will “spin the wheel" and assign each team a word
◈ The team's task is to read books to spell out the word, gaining points per letter tiered by the book length (see below)
◈ Once teams have read their word for the week they can "re-read" the word to gain more letter points, but no additional completion points.
◈ Only one incomplete spell-out is allowed.
◈ Only books STARTED after the challenge begins can count
◈ Books must be at least 160 pages in length.
Rules
◈ Audio books are allowed. For page numbers, use the "default" GR book page numbers. If the "default" is a Large Print version, use the next most popular edition for page numbers. If there is no print / ebook, then the audio book must be longer than 4 hours, and page numbers will be set at 160 pages, no matter how long the audio is.
◈ Books with MPGs Childrens / Kids / Poetry / Play / Graphic Novel / Illustrated / Photography / Art (or which have "Illustrated" in the title or an "Illustrator" contributor in the metadata) must have at least 40,000 words (must be a verified count. sites that provide estimated word counts are not valid sources for verifying word count). ArBookFind is a great site to double check (there are .com, .co.uk and .com.au versions). If in doubt, ask your captain. Another rule of thumb is the audiobook version should be over 4 hours.
◈ Any book in any language will count, as long as it meets the criteria.
◈ "Re-reads" will be allowed, if it has been six months since you have read the book. This includes listening to the audio version, if you've already read the book.
◈ Only books read during the specified round can be used (“read date” is what counts, not the day you start.) Books cannot be “banked” from previous rounds to use later in the challenge
Point System
◈ Books less than 160 pages = 0 points
◈ Books between 160 and 1000 pages = 0.1 points/page
◈ Books over 1000 pages = 100 points
(points will be rounded up/down from 0.5 as per standard maths)
Bonus points
Each week teams can gain 5 bonus points if a book used in the spell out is:
- at least 50% the colour cover associated with the team's word - to a maximum of 25 points
- that has at least 10 shelvings that matches the week's shelf. The same shelf will be used for all teams. There is no maximum points for the shelving.
How a "spell it out" works
Find the letters needed using the first letter in:
◈ book / series title*
◈ author first/last name
◈ FICTION ONLY: character name**
◈ If listening to the audio book: audio narrator first/last name
◈ If you are reading a translation: translator first/last name
* if the first word in the title/series is a definite or indefinite article you can ignore them if you prefer
** characters must be significant to the plot. you can use first, last or nickname.
Note that non-fiction books don't have characters

WHEEL WINNERS PRIZES
Two very exciting prizes are available to
1. The overall winning team
2. The team with the most participation in the BOMs
The overall winning team will be invited to pick the theme for our next team challenge. Before anyone starts cheering for WOBBLE return, that is NOT on the table, as even the Chipmunks of Creativity and Chaos can learn to spot danger now! However it does mean creative input into things like team names and designing mini-challenges. It is a team prize, so we'd invite all team members to an innovation lab for the challenge; it is entirely optional - team members do not have to participate if they don't want, but the prize isn't transferrable.
The team that has the most participation in the two BOMs (Nov Theme and Dec Adult) running during this challenge will get to pick either a shortlist of books to be voted on for the Adult / Non-Fiction BOM (probably February or March, depending on timings) OR to pick a theme and shortlist for the Themed BOM. Shortlist means at least 5 and no more than 8 books on the list. Standard BOM nominations rules will still apply.
Participation means answering at least three sets of DQs for each BOM. If at least half your team participates in a BOM then you will get a participation boost of 1.5. If all your team participates in a BOM then you will get a double boost! (e.g. if a team is 8 players and all 8 participate in BOM1 and 4 in BOM2 they'd get 8*2 points for BOM1 and 4*1.5 points for BOM2)
Notes: The participation in BOMs does not generate additional points for the team, just adds to the record for winning the BOM prize.
For this, you can still gain participation credits even if you don't use the book in your spell out. In order to gain the credit you must have started the BOM during Nov 2022, and finish them by the end of the challenge.

Am very happy that our lovely NBRC Mods were so gracious & organised it for us. 🙏
I am Melinda from Hungary and together with Michelle and Sophie will be your captain for this ride.
This will be my 4th wheelaton & I have always had great fun.
I am working for an EU Agency in Budapest, but live outside the city with my husband and my 8-year-old son. I commute most weekdays, which is fine, as that's when I get to read my books, mostly audiobooks these days.
My favourite genres are Classics/ Fantasy / Romance / History, but I am dipping my toes into other genres as well, except Horror & Thrillers.
My Wheel shelf is Wheel 7.
I am looking forward to playing with you all.

This is my first wheelathon so I'm not sure what goes on, although I'm certain it will be fun.
My shelf is wheels.

The main thing is to read books and have fun. :)
I hope as we start, it will get clearer. Reading the rules is always a good place to start, but don't hesitate to ask questions.
In the first round we need to spell out the phrase "Apples never fall" as many times as we can. One letter = one book where we can use title/author's name, character's name, etc...
If the books we read for this round have more than 50% grey on their covers + they are shelved as space opera, we get extra points.
These are not necessary, though.
The good thing about this challenge is that we can use most books for something.

I'm excited to play along with you all and get to know you better. I think this is my 2nd Wheel and my 1st time as a Wheel co-captain. I appreciate your patience.
I participate in a lot of challenges here on Goodreads! I love mystery/thriller and historical fiction genres the most, but I read a little bit of everything.
My shelf is Book Wheel Mobile 2022.
Hi everyone! I'm Sophie, your co-captain for this book mobile ride.
I've lost track of which team challenges I've done in the last 10+ years, but safe to say this isn't my first wheel.
I live in Kent, UK and am a GP with 2 children (5 and 2 today). I read when I get time round their chaos!
I haven't made my shelf yet but will get my act together soon.

This is my second (maybe 3rd) wheel.
I love mystery/thriller the best, but read anything except Sci-Fi.
My wheel shelf is wheel 7 (will link when I get to my laptop)
Looking forward to playing this fun challenge with you guys!
Hello Highlanders! I desperately wanted to find a good "Donald Where's Your Troosers?!" gif, but failed.
Mel, hopefully Men in Kilts have distracted you from the Sam Vimes outrage? I felt a bit guilty, but not enough! (Plus Sophie threatened physical violence if I stole you off her!)

I'm Chava, I live in Melbourne, Australia where we're starting to see the beginnings of summer. I am a wife (13 yr anniversary was last week) and mum of 4 kids (ages 12, 11, 9 and 7). I work as a mental health social worker & psychotherapist in private practice and senior clinician at a national youth mental health service.
This is my first challenge for 2022 after what feels like living under a rock for the last 2 years. I've done wheels before in previous years, but it's been a while so I'll need to refresh myself on the rules. My favourite genres are mystery/thriller, but I can be tempted to read whatever is needed to win the game! (I am competitive LOL).
It's funny that the phrase is Apples never fall, because that's the title of the book I was planning to read first for the challenge. It's ready & waiting on my Kindle.

You see: I am practising being mature & gracious like Lady Sybil. :D
I had Sam Vimes all to myself during TT8 after all. ♡
I am happy to be with Sophie + Outlander gifs are fun. :)
And I can always pretend that Outlander is The Wee Free Men. 😉

My favorite genres are urban fantasy, romance, and thrillers.
I tested positive for covid for the second time yesterday, so I'll spend the weekend moving between the bed and the couch.

Oh no, Silje!! :(
So sorry to hear it. I hope you will get better soon.
Thanks you for checking in with us.

I noticed that our first week Shelf/Tag was Space Opera. Not a favorite genre of mine for some reason.

Welcome to the Team, Heli. :)
Space Opera is not a genre I read as a rule, but I found a few interesting/entertaining ones via GR friends' recommendations.

(in case you have heard of the Murderbot series, this is the last installment and it is also a bit of a whodunnit :)
It barely qualifies with its 168 pages, but with colour and tag it will bring some points.
I have also had

Oh, great recommendations. I actually have both of them in my TBR.

@all Teamies
How about some general favourite books of yours and/or maybe a few you read in 2022 and loved or found interesting?
Cat - it's the first time I've been in a team with Mel and it's been over 10 years of challenges for me. She gets stuck in the Highlands of Scotland for now. If she behaves well, we might see where else the books take us.
Chava - Apples Never Fall is on my list too. Kinda has to be as I nominated it for BOM and that starts 2 days into the challenge!
Silje - I hope you don't feel too unwell and that you recover soon.
Heli -don't worry too much about the genre. It'll change before you know it. Helps that this is one that I will read happily, which won't be the case if we get horror at any point. (I'm avoiding any spoilers for what is coming up in the mods group so I'm as clueless as the rest of you!).
Mel - I've got A Memory of Empire on hold from the library so will see if I'm reading that as well. Frustratingly
which is my next murderbot, is 10 pages too short. Might see if I can read it before the challenge and then
looks grey and is long enough so can read that.

My favourites for this year have been:
The Seven Sisters series (2 timelines within a book as adopted sisters find out about their heritage).
Rosemary and Rue series (October Daye by Seanan Maguire). Urban fantasy
Mistress of the Art of Death Historical crime.

My favorite genres are Sci-Fi & Fantasy so I've read afew Space Opera. Not that I would actively seek it out.
Like Melindam, I would highly recommend the Murderbot series but the first 3 books in the series are too short for this challenge. Project Hail Mary & To Sleep in a Sea of Stars are good too but they are not fast-reads.
I've looked through my TBR mountain & might finally start on Dune which has been there for too long. Or maybe a shorter book like Space Opera or Ninefox Gambit or Gideon the Ninth.
I'm trying to fight off a reading slump with Patricia Briggs' Alpha & Omega series these days so I'll have to play it by ear.
Elli - looking at those options of things to read, you might also enjoy The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet if you haven't already read it.

Unsurprisingly, my TBR book-count usually jumps at the start of these challenges and then rises constantly. 😂

There is always a reason to read some Murderbot. 😉
I will be happy to try and read for any tags, but, just like for you: horror is just not my genre.

Once There Were Wolves - There is melancholic presence that made me spellbound.
The Book of Cold Cases - The blend of mystery & horror is 🧡
Sea of Rust - Picked this one up to get over Murderbot but ended up getting my heart broken.
& Day Zero - The prequel to Sea of Rust. Not a good solution to get over bots. I can't remember the last time I cried so much while reading a book.
Book of Night - Cool magic!
Once Upon a River - Nothing like a good story written by a great storyteller with a blend of different genres.

Yes I've tried that but it's too slow for my liking. I prefer fast-paced Sci-Fi.

I also have had We Are Legion (We Are Bob) on my TBR, but I cannot fit that in as an extra for Space Opera for next week unfortunately.
I also enjoyed the Interdependency series by John Scalzi, starting with The Collapsing Empire. It is quite fast-paced.

Unsurprisingly, my TBR book-count usually jumps at the start of these challenges and then rises constantly. 😂"
I know right!! My TBR mountain is big enough already but I can't resist all these recommendations! 🙈

We are Bob is well worth it when you have time.
Scalzi is one of my go to authors for something that moves with pace. His various books and series are quite different to each other.
