Masterpiece Theatre Reads discussion

Finished the book... and maybe it is just me, but I was really thrown by the ending of the book. I expected a "happier ever after" ending, with the bulk of the family's problems being sorted out, but I found it jarring to go from Flora leading the charge to sort things out and end up with her literally hopping into a plane to be whisked away by a prince. I guess it is an ideal ending in that she "has no marketable skills" but she seemed to be a strong-minded and confident personality and it felt odd. I am obviously imposing my modern lens on the characters which is unfair.

I did enjoy the fact all the "mysteries" were just left hanging, unlike so many other novels of this genre, and those closely related.

Agree! Such a strange book and ending! She was literally the angel figure “deus ex machina” dropped out of nowhere and lifted into the sky at the end back to heaven. To me it’s a comment on the upper classes and philanthropy. We see it with these major foundations run by billionaires. Their corporations cause the poverty and wealth disparity and then have the gall to try to “fix it” with charity after the fact.
