Mara | 33 comments Looking for fiction books with disabled protagonists that don't involve a romantic plotline. Any age level is fine. Any genre (other than romance, obviously) is also fine.

Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus
Freak the Mighty
Gathering Blue
Katy
Strangers and Cousins (there is some romance, but none of it involves the disabled protagonist, an elderly woman with dementia)

Also, for anyone else following this thread who might be looking for the same thing, I should mention A Kind of Spark. Middle grade with an autistic protagonist.

Zoe Lethbridge | 12 comments One of my faves is All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr, set in WW2 and starring a young girl who is blind.

I also remember liking Rhubarb by Craig Silvey, also featuring a woman who is blind and a man with agoraphobia. From memory, they are drawn to each other but not in a romantic way - although it’s been a while.

*Please note, Rhubarb is about 20 years old and quintessentially Aussie - there will be some ableist language and the characters will joke about their disabilities.
