Silly video game - it's
Cutie, not Cootie!

Teddie (teddieg) | 1012 comments Popcorn Cootie Pie-
you may be a binturong
but you’re right for me.

TIL: Did you know bearcats have a popcorn scent?

message 54: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments I love you guys!!!!!

Now I want popcorn.

message 55: by Lauri (last edited Jan 20, 2023 03:24PM) (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 935 comments Random musing # 347: I really don't care for popcorn -- BUT I wonder if their pee smells like popcorn, too? Or better yet -- BUTTER!!

HA!

message 56: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments That would be an interesting field of study. I'm sure there is a grant out there that could finance it if you feel like switching careers!

I wonder if I have ever seen a bearcat in a zoo. It doesn't look familiar, but it has been a while since I went to the zoo.

message 57: by Snowtulip (new)

Snowtulip | 834 comments Haiku wizards, love them!

I've seen a bearcat in real life, but it made me sad. We were in a market in Laos and they had one in a cage (it lived there), it was alone and didn't look to good :(

Our bearcat looks so much better :D

message 58: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 935 comments And soooo…. Let’s vote on his name! He has such a sweet face.
MY official vote: Rupert

message 59: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments I just looked up toy shops to see if there is a stuffed bearcat plushie, and yes, yes there is. Soooo cute.

And I am totally fine with Rupert.

Haylie Garner (hayliegarner) | 23 comments I haven’t been able to figure out the spreadsheet yet. But I was wondering for the books, do we have to start them in February? Or if we start at the end of January and finish it In February it counts?

message 61: by Snowtulip (new)

Snowtulip | 834 comments I'm partial to Keanu, but I think it's primarily because I was not fond of a Rupert in school
😬

But I can completely adapt!

Only books started after the challenge starts will count.

What do you need to know about the spreadsheet?
All questions answered here!!!!

message 63: by Snowtulip (new)

Snowtulip | 834 comments Added a few color covers to the spreadsheet

Meet Cute by Helena Hunting Concrete Rose (The Hate U Give, #0) by Angie Thomas

I may add more, depending on how quickly library holds come in :)

message 64: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments I have my little pile of color covers, but I waiting for you all to grab some. I will mop up the remainders if needed. Don't forget about the Wild Draw 4s!

message 65: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 935 comments I can’t remember - - must be old age! What is our minimum allowable page count? I enjoy Murderbot, too, but I do remember that my book was too short to count one year…

message 66: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Murderbot will work here. 100 pages is the floor. It is NBRC challenges that start at 160 pages

message 67: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 935 comments Yaaayyyy! I do confuse myself sometimes…

Hi Haylie! Try clicking on the tracking spreadsheet under message 5. I kept trying to access the "Team Spreadsheet", but I think that one is only for the captains to update as the "official" spreadsheet.

message 69: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Jessica, you are correct! The official spreadsheet gets updated at the end of the month so we don't have to move stuff around on that one.
The tracking sheet has a couple of extra columns, one for listing the cards your book will work for beyond the claimed spot, and one for the captains to check off that the book has been read and fits the card.
Occasionally we captains end up playing spreadsheet Tetris to make all the books fit. So, if anything is moved around, don't worry, the books are somewhere. Angie and I will keep you guys updated when we do this.

message 70: by Snowtulip (new)

Snowtulip | 834 comments The anticipation of starting always kills me!

message 71: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 935 comments I know, right! I can’t wait!

Fun fact: I am a mood reader AND a serial book starter! I read multiple books simultaneously. Sometimes this really works in my (our) favor and sometimes not so much…
We shall see!

message 72: by Haylie (new)

Haylie Garner (hayliegarner) | 23 comments Thank you! I think I add some and it worked, if anyone wants to double check if they are on there and if I put it in correctly? :)

message 73: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Looks good, Haylie.

If you guys can, link to your book on the spreadsheet. If you can't, no problems.

message 74: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Lauri, I do the same thing. The only times having several books going at once is a problem, is when two of them are mysteries or space opera, or whatever. Getting plots mixed up when I move from one book to the other in the same genre can be brain bruising.

message 75: by Snowtulip (new)

Snowtulip | 834 comments I also do multiple books at a time...usually different genres...and audio, paper and ebook :)

I recently moved closer to my work location and while I love the shorter commute, it's messing with my audiobook time!

message 76: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 935 comments I have never done an audiobook mainly because my commute time to work is about 5 minutes! I really don't like ereaders because I love the feel & smell of a real book in my hands. I have finally broken down & use my tablet at night because my eyesight is getting bad!

message 77: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments I do all of the mediums. I get to listen to books at work, and I read actual books, and I use my Kindle, mainly for KU books. A good narrator can really give a book life, and a bad one can made me very angry.

I just stopped at my bookstore, and they had the new Jonathan Carroll waiting for me!!!!! One of my top 5 ever authors, that virtually no one has heard of.

Anyone wanting to try something new and beautiful and deeply weird, give Sleeping in Flame (Answered Prayers, #2) by Jonathan Carroll or Outside the Dog Museum (Answered Prayers, #4) by Jonathan Carroll a try.

And, I am finishing Dinosaurs by Lydia Millet , and I sooooo see why it was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. Wow.

They can be read as stand alones? And, yes, I haven't heard of him...but I'm curious :)

message 79: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Most of his books can be read as stand alone. There is a bit of a through thread with some characters, but not so much that you have to read any in order.
Sleeping in Flame was the first book of his that I read, and I have read every book since, and most of his short stories as well.

Not addicted. Not at all.

message 80: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 935 comments I haven't heard of him -- and that's really saying something! I will look into this further...

Let's all give a shout out to our favorite underrated or little-known authors, shall we?

Mine would be Juliet Marillier. Love her Sevenwaters series...

Now trying to desperately finish all my Christmas stories before February 1st..... TTFN.

message 81: by Teddie (last edited Jan 27, 2023 04:04PM) (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 1012 comments @Jenny - I was looking at Dinosaurs the other day on GR - just checked it out from the library - looks really good. I swear I've seen you suggest Sleeping in Flame somewhere before, and I loved another suggestion of yours (In Other Lands) so I just picked up the kindle version of and plan to read it in Feb :)

@Lauri - I've had Daughter of the Forest on my TBR for a while, so I'll read that for another Reverse in February!

Not sure these are really little-known, but a few suggestions to add some sun:
- a happy ending with some very funny bits along the way: The Last Time I Was Me
- set in post Vietnam war Laos, this series has a great protagonist with a sly sense of humor
- I read this one just when I needed it - a hopeful dystopia - lol: A Psalm for the Wild-Built
- One of my favorite characters, and a great series: The Warrior's Apprentice

message 82: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments I recently read my first Marillier book, and liked it a lot. Daughter of the Forest

message 83: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments My other two favorites that no one has heard of are Beverly Connor and Tony Vigorito.

And many many others...

message 84: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Teddie, I loved Psalm for the Wild-Built. That series is great. As are her other books. The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet is one of those books that draws non sci-fi lovers in.

Just added the Bujold book to my TBR.

I constantly recommend certain books. I am not surprised if you have seen me do it before. There are just certain books that I want everyone to experience, even though I know it is a long shot.

message 85: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Oh, and Elliot from In Other Lands is one of my favorite characters ever. He is the king of snark.

Teddie (teddieg) | 1012 comments Jenny wrote: "Oh, and Elliot from In Other Lands is one of my favorite characters ever. He is the king of snark."

Elliot is awesome - perhaps only rivaled in snark by the baby (fetus?) in Nutshell :) I loved the gender flip in the elven culture too.

message 87: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments I looooooved Nutshell. I need to reread that one.

I've never felt such empathy for an AI - still working my way through that series.

I added One Grave Too Many to my TBR - always on the lookout for new detective series, so thanks! I like this series too - Roxane Weary - protagonist is kind of screwed up, but relatable.

message 89: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Added to my TBR.
Have you read Generation Loss? Talk about a screwed up protagonist. Great books.

message 90: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 1012 comments I haven't - I will move that up the queue!

message 91: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 935 comments Who doesn't love a screwed up protag? Just makes it all the more relatable. I even feel for Murderbot sometimes..... HA!

message 92: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Apparently, Murderbot is in development for a series in Hollywood.
How the hell can they cast that? Is he a man? Is she a woman?
I would love to be at the casting director's table for that discussion.

I’ve always thought female. Non-binary may be the way to go with that…

message 94: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments I saw it as male. But, neutered male. Or something. A very androgynous actor would be the best choice I think. I can't think of one off the top of my head. The androgynous actors I can think of are slighter in stature than how I picture Murderbot.

I just want the next book in the series. Now. I want it now.

message 95: by Snowtulip (new)

Snowtulip | 834 comments Wow, that is such a hard casting decision...absolutely no one comes to mind that I'd want to play Murderbot. It may keep me from watching it...

message 96: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Right? Only Tilda Swinton comes to mind after seeing her as Gabriel in "Constantine", but she is way too well known. Perhaps a newbie would be best. How cool would it to be to have "I played Murderbot" on your resume?

message 97: by Lauri (new)

Better join SAG right now, Jenny! You may just get your shot!!

message 98: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Yeah, not very Murderbot like, me.
Maybe for a halloween or Comicon costume!

message 99: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 935 comments I always wanted to dress up as a zombie for work on Halloween. I am a huge Walking Dead fan. But because I work at a mental hospital, we’re not allowed to dress as anything violent, provocative, scary…. Just fun, happy things, no masks, no blood & gore. *sigh*
Where’s the fun in that?

message 100: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments All zombie apocalypses (apocali?) start at hospitals. So, if you do dress up that way, just know it will all be your fault. And bring a bat.
