Jenny | 2346 comments Hi all. Welcome to Uno 2023, and the bestest team, the Bearcats!!!!

I am Jenny, one of the captains, and I am hoping that we are all going to have a blast with this year’s Uno.
I live in Phoenix, with my two monster-kitties. I am a rabid football fan, (Packers and Badgers to be specific), science nerd, whiskey snob, and book addict. My go to genre is science fiction, but I love many different kinds of books. If it is well written, I’m all over it.

I know many of you have played before, but if you haven’t, and have questions, ask away! No question too silly.

Since our first month has 6 reverse cards, I thought we could start with some recommendations. What are the books that you most want others to experience for themselves?

Angie ☯ | 990 comments Hello everyone!!
Welcome to Uno!

I hope you are as excited as I am for a new year of Uno!

- I'm Angie, your co-captain for this round of Uno.
- I am a in the US, Eastern time zone, but I check in to GR all throughout the day.
- I will read pretty much anything with Non-Fiction being my least favorite Genre, but I'll read it for challenges.
- I believe this is my 6th round of Uno.
- I work in the accounting/finance field since forever!
- I'm a Raiders gal, even when they forget how to play football!

I look forward to playing with you all!! Let's have some UNO fun!!

Haylie Garner (hayliegarner) | 23 comments Hi! My name is Haylie! This is my first time playing UNO.
I’m in the US, Louisville Kentucky to be exact.
I read a lot of fantasy and fiction.

For the reverse cards, I saw “Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow” on your read list as well as “the silence of the girls “ that I would be interested in reading for the reverse cards!
Since this is my first time playing do you give us each a card from the weeks hand and we have to pick a book that goes with that card?

I’m excited to play this year!

message 12: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Hi Haylie!
You get to read for any cards that you want for the month. If you go to the tracking spreadsheet, linked in message five, you will see the cards that we have. Feel free to grab whatever you want.

There is a tab with an example spreadsheet that can be referenced if you are not sure what to fill out.

Also, if you are uncomfortable using the spreadsheet, you can just let us know.

Lauri (otwlauri) | 935 comments Aloha, all! I’m Lauri from Hawaii & am very excited to be on Team Bearcat! I was so hoping to get an animal to love! I do not care much for birds, reptiles or amphibians (looong story!) our Bearcat is adorable! What shall we name him?

I absolutely cannot use a spreadsheet to save my own life, so I will be asking for lots of assistance…. Can’t wait to start playing!

message 14: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 935 comments Hey gang! The friends page doesn’t seem to be working for me right now… feel free to send me a request & I’ll reply as soon as I’m able. Please also feel free to check out my OCD books 5 star reads are my most beloved books (for reverses & whatnot. )

I’m an older lady, married to my best friend for 33 years. We have 1 adult son who’s still at home with us. Things are very expensive here! I still work full time at our State Hospital (yes, read mental hospital. ) I’m in medical records, so I genuinely feel that a am really helping people. I read obsessively! My favorite genres are historical fiction, paranormal, mysteries, chick lit, humor. I will read just about any subject, though. I hope to retire within the decade (HA! More time for reading!) and hope to travel a bit. I really want to see Europe before I die. Better get going on that….

I look forward to reconnecting with my old friends and getting to know all my teammates better…

Snowtulip | 834 comments Hi Everyone, so excited to be doing Uno again :)

I'm in New Mexico and love romance, fantasy and sci-fi....but read just about anything except most horror.

Some recommendations:
Fantasy -The Lightbringer Series
Sci-fi - Murderbot Diaries
Climate dystopia - Migrations
Romance -The Simple Wild

You are on the ss in hand one and hand two.

message 18: by Jenny (last edited Jan 15, 2023 04:11PM) (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Hi Lauri, and Hi Snowtulip!!!
Looking forward to playing again!

Snowtulip, as a Murderbot superfan, and a fan of Migrations. I think you must have excellent taste and will add your other recs to my TBR.

Lauri, Yes, we do need to name our Bearcat! The mods were teasing me when I asked for Keanu Reeves that it was him in disguise, but we do not need to call him Keanu.

message 19: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 935 comments I dunno… kind of like Keanu! He also looks like a Boris or maybe a George…
I confess I Googled Bearcat! Omnivore, also known as Bandicoot…
Too funny!

message 20: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Too on the nose to call him Cootie?

message 21: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 1012 comments Cootie Pie? Is it wrong that the first name I thought of was Edwidge? lol I like Keanu too :)

Glad to be on team bearcat! I took last year off from challenges, so I'm looking forward to this crew and Uno!

I live in Buffalo, NY and read most genres - I'll check out some Read shelves for reverse options. Look forward to playing with you all!

message 22: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Cootie Pie. Oh yes. That is so cute it is stupid. Or so stupid it is cute. Not sure which, but I love it.

Hi Teddie!!!! Glad you made it back to the world of challenges.

message 23: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 935 comments I do like Cootie Pie or how about Rupert?

message 24: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 4427 comments Hello Team Bearcat!

I am just a spectator of the show (brought some popcorn with me🍿 ), but it's very enjoyable.

Will check on later what's the final name you settle on for Keanu Pie.

Have loads of fun! 😉

message 25: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Morning all! (morning for me at least...)

I just want to brag a bit on how cool this team is already, as you all have your Uno shelves set up, and therefore no, absolutely no, begging from the captains is needed!!!!!

Has everyone had a chance to look at our tracking spreadsheet?
Have you decided on books to start with?

I think I am going to start with First, Become Ashes by K.M. Szpara and Dr. No by Percival Everett , and maybe The Freedom Race (The Dreambird Chronicles, #1) by Lucinda Roy .

message 26: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 1012 comments I've got a few books ready - the tracking sheet is still View Only for me - should we just post our planned books to the team thread?

message 27: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Nope. Let me see if I can fix that!

message 28: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Should be good now. (I hope)

message 29: by Angie ☯ (new)

Angie ☯ | 990 comments Hi everyone!
Sorry about the spreadsheet debacle! Not sure what is happening this time around, I usually have no trouble setting those up!

Anyways, so glad to see everyone! I love all the names for our little bearcat!

Happy Monday!

Sonia (darktalynn) | 321 comments WAIT A MINUTE... Are you telling me that Crash Bandicoot is actually a bear?!

All those hours spent killing the poor guy (Yes, I suck at gaming, even if I do enjoy it from time to time)... I'm a bear killer...

message 31: by Eni (new)

Eni | 169 comments Hi all *waves* I'm Eni (real name Catarina) and I'm from Portugal, Europe. If I'm not mistaken this is my fourth Uno and I'm excited to be here with you all!
I live with my sister Sónia, our two lovely cats and my (not so) little minion. She's 10 and she's currently driving us crazy... I'm dreading her teenager years 🥺

I do enjoy reading, however these last few years I've been struggling to read anything. I just do a couple of team challenges a year and that's it :( I am a mood reader, and I enjoy horror, dystopian, urban fantasy, some fantasy, some sci-fi, some paranormal.. I can also read the occasional chick-lit or mystery.

I love our animal. He looks so cuddly 😍😍

Google claims "Crash is a mutant eastern barred bandicoot" ....whatever that means 😅 where's Karen? She's Australian! She can help!

Are bearcats Aussie natives? But they're Cincinnatti's Mascot?

And Karen is probably sleeping since it's either 4 AM or 2 AM in Sidney (I never know)

message 35: by Haylie (new)

Haylie Garner (hayliegarner) | 23 comments Love and Other Words by Christina Lauren and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin

Are the books im thinking of starting with in february!

message 36: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Thanks for the picture Sonia!!
Look at that face. He needs cuddles. Stat.

Haylie, I just read Tomorrow and Tomorrow and I loved it. Hope you do too.

Eni, Sonia, I am not a gamer, so I don't know what Crash Bandicoot comes from, but now I need to know please.

message 37: by Sonia (new)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 321 comments Following Eni's lead, I've concluded that Crash Bandicoot in real life is indeed Australian:

message 38: by Sonia (new)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 321 comments So, no bearcat. *relieved*

Btw, did you know that according to google, bearcars smell like buttered popcorn?!

*turns to Eni*

Can I haz one?

message 39: by Jessica (last edited Jan 16, 2023 10:19AM) (new)

Jessica | 317 comments Hi team! I am so excited to be back to Uno after an extended time away :) I live in Central TX with my husband of 14 years, our two boys (13 and 8) and our sweet little kitties.

I will read anything but tend to gravitate towards science fiction and fantasy. I can read The Love Hypothesis for a reverse (read by Haylie); I own it and have wanted to read it for a while! When I look at the SS, I don't see anything filled in and I'm in Read Only mode.

Super excited that this looks like a really fun group! I LOVE Cootie Pie as the mascot. LOL! I can't wait to get to know all of you and get the challenge started!

message 40: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Hi Jessica!
I looks like there are few sci-fi lovers on this team. Makes for dangerous favorite book sharing times ahead. My TBR is about to get much longer, I fear. teehee

And, I am making a call for pet pictures!!!!! I will add mine when I get home from work tonight. They will surely be doing something cute or annoying.

message 41: by Sonia (last edited Jan 16, 2023 11:01AM) (new)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 321 comments You were saying... cute and annoying... You mean like this?

She doesn't look that annoying BUT I was working and she had her "Pet Me Human Minion" face on.

message 42: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments I assume you dropped what you were doing to serve your master.

message 43: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 935 comments Sadly, no pets. So no pet pictures. If I ever live somewhere that allows pets, I would have at least 1 cat and 1 dog! I grew up surrounded by animals & still miss having them near… I am far more likely to talk to dogs being walked than to their humans. I would definitely go to the humane society and adopt a rescue of uncertain parentage! *sigh*

message 44: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Do they both fit on my lap? Hmmm?

Of course. And then she did the :I'm climbing to your laptop so you have to do the arm throne for me to sit on during your meeting movement.

Which is kinda cute, if not for the fact that I need at least one arm to type :D

message 46: by Snowtulip (new)

Snowtulip | 834 comments The adorableness is beyond control! All the fur babies look so cuddly :)

And agree, my sci-fi tbr is already growing and we haven't even started!

I'm still pondering what my first book will be, i'll get a few on the spreadsheet and then I'm completely a mood reader.

message 48: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Goodness. Have we had an issue in the past?

message 49: by Sonia (new)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 321 comments Jenny wrote: "Goodness. Have we had an issue in the past?"

Are having an issue. Our fur babies decided that pillows and blankets or bags that are on the floor are way more convenient than the litter box.

My older one had kidney issues.. so.. sometimes "accidents" happened. I guess they are still stuck in the bad habits.

message 50: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments All right, team, I think it is time for a Haiku-off. If you prefer limericks, have at it!!!!

Bearcat the brave one
Looks at us, shouts to the sky,
"Why call me Cootie?"
