Jenny | 2346 comments We have the mini-challenge!!!!!
Start planning your books, but remember that they have to be finished after the mini starts!

                         description

FOUR AUSPICIOUS BEASTS (Four Guardians/Symbols) - February Mini Challenge

This is an optional mini challenge for our UNO players.
The Four Auspicious Beats are mythological creatures among the Chinese constellations along the ecliptic, and viewed as the guardians of the four cardinal directions. They are

- the Azure Dragon of the East,
- the Vermilion Bird of the South,
- the White Tiger of the West, and
- the Black Tortoise of the North.

Each of the creatures is most closely associated with a cardinal direction and a color, but also additionally represents other aspects, including a season of the year, an emotion, virtue, and one of the Chinese "five elements" (wood, fire, earth, metal, and water).*
(*source: Wikipedia)

We need them on our side to bring peace, prosperity and protection and we can evoke them by reading books.

                         description

◈ Every book read, i.e. every task completed, is worth 10 points, with the exception of specific tasks (where different points are assigned, they are mentioned in the tasks). Each book can be used for one task only.
◈ Books for tasks can be finished in any order. No need to complete blocks to get the 10 points/book.
◈ If your team completes the first 40 tasks, you get 30 points as bonus. If you also complete the extra tasks (5th set - 6 tasks), the bonus is 40 points.

◈ Books can be started at any point since the start of the UNO challenge (Feb 1)
◈ Books need to be finished after the start of this mini challenge on Feb 14, 9am UTC https://www.timeanddate.com/countdown... and before March 1 at 9am UTC (when the March UNO month begins).

◈ Books used for this mini challenge do not need to be separate books from what you are claiming for your UNO hands
◈ The usual book length rules apply
◈ Team spreadsheets will be updated with a mini challenge tab so that you can track your books and claim your points

Thank you!
The movie was totally Americanized. It's by a Japanese author & much more Asian in tone & nature. We went to see the movie in the theatre & I was amazed to see 'based on the book!' So I immediately searched for it in my library system, ordered it & here we go. It's still entertaining, but a lot more serious in tone than the movie.

Jenny | 2346 comments Hey everyone!
If you all get the chance, can you check in with a hello or a book recommendation, or your pick for the Super Bowl please?

Also, the mini-challenge is up on the spreadsheet, so feel free to start grabbing up spots. If any of the books you already have planned are not going to be finished before the 14th, and have mini-tasks they can fit, then add those too!!!!

I noticed 2 WD4s where repeating the same color card. Color cards can only be repeated 1 time. I moved one of the books to a different hand/card.

Haylie Garner (hayliegarner) | 23 comments Hi! Sorry I've been so busy with work, I haven't had a chance to get on here and have only read a little. For the mini challenge, is this required or is this just an extra way to grab points?

Jenny | 2346 comments The mini is not required, no, but just extra fun and extra points.

Happy Tuesday all!

message 177: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 1012 comments I just finished The Hilarious World of Depression by John Moe

question: there's a microphone on the cover, but it's an illustration, so not sure that it will work for the mini task of:
Read a book with some kind of metal or a metallic object on the cover

If not, it does fit the 4 in the pages task, but as that's an easier task, I thought I'd check.

message 178: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 1012 comments Also: Stephen Colbert is going to make a tv series for The Chronicles of Amber! If anyone will keep the integrity of that series, uber-geek Stephen should be up to the task :)

message 179: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments A microphone is a metallic object, so I think it is fine. If the task calls for a cat on the cover and it is a cartoon cat, that works!

I want to reread Amber now. I heard that rumor and I have the same hope. Now I want to play around with the potential cast in my head.

Re: microphone - awesome!

Re: amber - I know! I love thinking about casting for books I love. Corwin, Fi, Random, Benedict - it could be so cool with the right writing and cast :) The Red Rising series is another one I think could be really good as a tv series.

message 181: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments I have been hearing rumors for years and years about The Stupidest Angel: A Heartwarming Tale of Christmas Terror being made into a movie. I went to an author signing and asked Christopher Moore if the rumor that I started was true (which made him laugh!) that Fabio was to be cast as the angel. He would neither confirm nor deny.

I can't think of anyone better.

One of my favorite Christmas books ev-er! I would seriously pay BIG money to see that casting in the movie! Love Christopher Moore! LAMB is another big favorite and Bloodsucking Fiends......

message 183: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments I was reading/listening to Bite Me when I adopted my siamese kitty. So, of course, I named him Kayso, after the word that Abby uses all the time as a valley-girl-accented segue.

People think I named him after cheese dip.

message 184: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 1012 comments I've never read any Christopher Moore - now I know where to start :)

message 185: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Oh good god. Get ready to laugh out loud and enjoy yourself immensely.

Stupidest Angel is a good place to start, and if you like it, then prepare to grab up a lot of books.
Lamb The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal by Christopher Moore A Dirty Job (Grim Reaper, #1) by Christopher Moore Fool by Christopher Moore Island of the Sequined Love Nun by Christopher Moore , etc, etc.

message 186: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 1012 comments thanks! Lamb looks like a good March or April yellow card book candidate

message 187: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 935 comments Only read Lamb if you're not overly religious. It pokes fun at Christianity in general. Some people are highly offended. Although I am Catholic, I respect all religions and found Lamb hilarious! (Even if the 1st thing resurrected is a reptile.) The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove is pretty funny, too.

I would love it if there was a Red Rising tv series...if they got the cast right...I will hope and dream!

message 189: by Eni (new)

Eni | 169 comments I switched my reverse spot to Magic Tides, since angie also read it. I've been struggling with the will to read, so i'm just going to go for my comfort readings (aka Kate Daniels and Mercy). I should finish the ninth house tonight though. I blame Sonia! She bought a PS5 and we bought Hogwarts Legacy, so now i want to play video games and not read -_-' she totally only did it to keep me away from the challenge!!!

message 190: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Sonia is evil. But she is soooo good at it!

message 191: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 935 comments This year with all the streaming services, I admit I'm a little off my reading game, too! So far this year I have watched 68 different movies! Way more than my finished books. Yikes! I love browsing through GR, but am also finding I love browsing for movie titles on all the different services (including Prime!) Is this just another addicting drug they're feeding us?
Conspiracy theorists, UNITE!

message 192: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments I have been sucked into way too many series on the different streaming platforms. Some of them are 4 to 8 episodes, but I fall prey to the series that have been around for years, and then what is a girl to do but go back to the beginning? Many a weekend has been lost to a good show.
You are not alone.

message 193: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 1012 comments I am in the same streaming boat as the rest of you - have fallen prey recently to Persons of Interest - lol.

message 194: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments British mysteries for me. And The Rookie.

And I want more Luther. And more Sherlock. I don't care if the stars of these shows are busy and popular movie stars now. I want them to go back to the tv.

message 195: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Is it just me or are the book pages not loading? I can't access tags or write a review or anything.

I HATE THESE NEW BOOK PAGES!!!!!!!!!

message 196: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments On another note, we still need one color card book- 5 Red, and one Wild Draw 4- any of the Yellow cards or Red 5.

Any takers?

Also, there are very few books claimed on the mini-task so far. I did find shirt KU books for almost every task, so if anyone wants a suggestion, or is willing to take one (or more) for the team, I will write out the list of books I found.

I have a bunch of books that I read in February, but have not claimed yet, as I didn't want to hog all of the cards. I will likely spend some time this weekend grabbing up spots, so if I claim something any of you wanted to, just yell out. I am not precious about needing my name on stuff.

message 197: by Angie ☯ (new)

Angie ☯ | 990 comments I agree with everyone on the streaming platforms! So many things to watch!

Teddie - I really liked Person of Interest!

Jenny - I too would like more Luther (which you introduced me to) and Sherlock!! There is an upcoming Luther movie, I believe

message 198: by Angie ☯ (new)

Angie ☯ | 990 comments I'm also with Jenny on the mini and other cards for the game.

Don't be shy. Claim any tasks you want to read before the end of the round.

I can find something for any card/task. I will claim some on the weekend, but if someone wants that card/task, just let me know and I'll read for something else.

message 199: by Jenny (new)
