MelanyNightmare | 1 comments So I'm trying to get my daughter more excited about books. She reads at a 9th, almost 10th grade reading level but she's only 11. I told her I'd read whatever book she reads and we can discuss the book every night before bed. But I'm completely stuck on what to read with her. Any help is appreciated.

so_big_hope Does she enjoy fantasy, thriller, perhaps something LGBT+? What book preference does she have?

jj one of us is lying, the bean trees, the outsiders, looking for alaska, divergent, the hate u give, and the giver

Anne's book habit What kind of TV shows and movies does she like? I've always found that helpful when making recommendations, especially if their are things she likes that are based off book or if there are novelization of those shows/movies

Siobhan | 129 comments KOTLC i wish i had read that when i was 11. Also warrior cats too. Um Way of the Warrior series by Chris Bradford, Ranger's Apprentice by John Flanagan and pretty much every Riordan book. If she doesn't like those drag her to the library and let her choose a book. Kids like reading stuff they picked out

MelanyNightmare | 1 comments She’s really into decendants but I think she’s read all of those books. She’s the worst at picking a book and sticking to it. She gets so bored so easily. She gets off of school in 2 hours so I’ll ask her what kind of books she likes and report back here with her answer.

Anne's book habit My sister is the same way. It either catches her attention right in the beginning, and she finishes the book in a day, or she ends up never finishing it.
If she likes the decendant books, she might like the everafter high series.

August (Dean's Version) | 118 comments I'd suggest Ever After High books, there's a bunch. Another series is Whatever After by Sarah Mlynowski.

Goose (sirgoosey) | 58 comments If it's the sort of movie that she likes I would recommend the Ella Enchated book

nat | 5 comments I’m 14 and read at that level at her age. The Truly Devious series is a really good mystery and has an lesbian side romance and a character with they/them pronouns. The Nevermoor series is amazing and has witchy elements, plus some mystery and really interesting science- based magic systems. Also the Lunar Chronicles are a great twisted fairytale series, and Keeper of the Lost Cities (KOTLC) is a really good fantasy series. ❤️

Anakin Skywalker | 11 comments You should join one of the many Middle Grade book groups on Goodreads and ask this question. Your daughter isn't in the YA age range yet (13+) and I can already see a few recs here that aren't suitable (I love THUG but I would never give it to an eleven year old. Loads of swearing).

message 16: by mar (new)

mar i’d suggest the selection series, i really loved those books in middle school!

message 17: by Mariah (new)

Mariah | 68 comments I'd recommend books by Rick Riordan. He's a middle grade author of the Percy Jackson series, The Kane Chronicles, Magnus Chase, The Trials of Apollo. Harry Potter, The Diamond of Drury Lane by Julie Golden.

message 18: by Goose (new)

Goose (sirgoosey) | 58 comments It also depends on what sort of stuff you feel ok with your kid reading or feel ok reading to your kid. Like how do you feel about swearing? Certain topics? ect...
If we're sticking with Middle Grade I would say Percy Jackson, Leven Thumps and the Gateway to Foo, Nimona, the Last Fallen Star, Secret Garden, Pollyanna, (I personally loved Little Women in like late 5th grade?), Anne of Green Gables, ect

message 19: by Goose (new)

Goose (sirgoosey) | 58 comments Series of Unfortunate Events is also good

message 20: by Goose (new)

Goose (sirgoosey) | 58 comments sorry if I keep spaming, I keep getting new book ideas every 5 minutes. Stargirl, Wonder, and (if you're ok with crying) Bridge to Terabithia! plus, I know it's awhile away but during the summer most libraries I know will have this little paper that recommends books for different grades so you may wanna check that out.

paige mooney (semi-hiatus) (magepoony) | 6 comments To avoid saying some stuff I’m sure others have already said, I’ll recommend a book called The Anybodies. It’s kind of like A Series of Unfortunate Events and I read it around 10/11.

message 26: by Erika (new)
