Both from Richard Matheson.

On our bookshelf is I Am Legend with three movie versions to choose from with “The Last Man On Earth” from 1964, 1971’s “The Omega Man”, and Will Smith’s 2007 “I Am Legend”.

I guess less we’ll known is The Shrinking Man with a great 1957 movie version, “The Incredible Shrinking Man”.

I just recently read the novel, which was included in the Library of America American Science Fiction: Four Classic Novels 1953–1956: The Space Merchants / More Than Human / The Long Tomorrow / The Shrinking Man.

Well said Stephen. I know the movie made a big impression on me as a kid, especially the poignant philosophical ending.

Funnily enough the only one of those four classic novels I haven’t read is The Shrinking Man.

It’s an interesting novel. Action scenes, such as combat with a spider, and also agonizing over his lost manhood as the guy shrinks. Also a wild, out-of-left-field ending. I haven’t seen the movie.
