How did you like the characters? The plot? The style? The portrayal of characters and their surroundings?

Ndongo stood out, but both wives were likable. The narrative style supported them well, its sassy undercurrent. I loved the opening scene, their excitement to vote, their banter. It’s always a joy to read books when women stick together, even in a situation like this where it could be tempting to compete.

For me, the story was humorous, despite the negative aspects. I think that, again, goes back to Yabouza. The judge was speaking, she say, in a neutral tone as if he was choosing between a papaya or mango. Then, the judgment— “but the court bla bla bal… dismisses it on its substance bla bla blaaah…” This was a serious matter, but the narrative is snarky. I really liked that!
