I very rarely see a bookshelf organized the same way. I have mine categorized by genre, then alphabetized by title for standalones, followed by series/ box sets.

message 2: by Adélie (new)

Adélie Are we talking a real bookshelf? Made of wood with real boks that smell of books? Lol

Ugh I wish I still had a book shelf *distant cry of agony* lol
I had to move to a different city after the first big lockdown and couldn’t take all my books with me so sold most of them and left the rest with my neighbour. And I invested in a kindle to save money and also for practicality until I settle somewhere and can build myself a reading nook with all my books.

Before covid took my books away lol I had them organised I think much the same way I have them organised on my kindle. Kind of by genre but like not exactly. I’d have my epic fantasy together, my swashbuckling stuff, but then have a special place for werewolves, dragons, mermaids, vampires, Greek mythology. Fairy tales. I would struggle if they fit more than one category lol.

message 3: by Alissa (new)

Alissa | 8 comments By genre and also by size lol. I like the bigger books on the outside, smaller towards the middle. I put the series’ that I liked the most at the top and the least at the bottom of the shelf. Singles just go by size at the bottom

message 4: by Sezzy (new)

Sezzy | 2 comments My bookshelf is alphabetised by author.
I like the idea of doing it by genre but all of my books are fantasy. 😅
I have a couple of romance books (from when I went though a fantasy drought) but they don’t go on the shelf 😂

lol I love that they don't make it on your shelf, hahahaha

book goblin | 6 comments It’s unlawful but I organize my color. It’s easier on the eyes for me to group them this way.
Also I don’t have many physical copies of books. Im always on the go and prefer reading books off my phone.

i organize mine by genre like most people seem to do! within the genre, i don’t have any sort of system aside from keeping series/standalones by the same author together! :)

HannahsHardcovers I’ve always organized it alphabetically by author and then title. Considering changing it up so series are together, but it hasn’t happened yet!

message 9: by Sam (new)

Sam 🌱🌱 | 4 comments Mines quite basic lmao
I have two rows in my shelves, the front is for fantasy series which is just organised by series and the second row back is for standalones and romances.
I have the back row elevated slightly so you can see the titles and in the front row I keep all of my Victoria aveyard books on their sides so I can keep my 3D puzzles on them.

♡Addison♡ (cayleighstern) | 5 comments I have each of my shelves organized alphabetically but 2 of my shelves are full of favorites and the other shelf is pretty much half full of crap I've never read nor will I.

message 11: by Adélie (new)

Adélie I’m sure there’s a psychologist somewhere taking notes about us lmao

message 12: by kirstreads (new)

kirstreads | 13 comments Each shelf consists of the same genre and from there it’s by type of book (leather, clothbounds, hardcover, and then paperbacks)

message 13: by Mackenzi (new)

Mackenzi (kenzilynn13_) i'm slowly trying to build my bookshelf back up but for now, I have it by color, which just looks nice since it's also the focal point in my tiny NYC apartment :))

message 14: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 10 comments Mine is organized by genre and I keep books by the same author together and I also try to separate hardbacks and paperbacks.

message 15: by Νιnα ❦ (new)

Νιnα ❦ (baf3flo) | 3 comments Firstly by genre and then by colour

message 16: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 12 comments By genre then size to fit nicely on my floating shelves. I try to be minimalistic/economical with books, so I read fiction books on my kindle via a library app then if I love a book and know I want to re-read one day, I buy it. The ones I buy (Fourth Wing, Harry Potter, Love Hypothesis, ACOTAR and then cyber threats and security books) I have on the floating shelves while my granddad's classics from the 1900s are on shelves.

message 17: by Haylee (new)

Haylee (haylees_bookshelf) | 12 comments I organize mine in alphabetical order by authors last name. Personally it’s the easiest way for my to find what I’m looking for.

message 18: by Cat (new)

Cat B | 6 comments I previously ordered mine by genre. Currently I have it organized alphabetically by author’s last name, but I need to redo it because I’ve thrifted some books that are just sitting in a bag while I figure out how I’m going to fit them haha.

Mariana (Jacki’s version) I think I like to organize mine in two ways: I organize them by series, obviously (props to those who organize them by colors, but that’s just chaotic evil to me), and then by size. I don’t like having a small series followed by one that’s taller.

message 20: by Joyce (new)

Joyce No organization what so every. I try to fit as many of them on the shelf as possible. That can be sideways, stacked, or on top of each other.

Reading all your comments make me think I may need to sort my life out and organize my bookshelf’s 😂

message 21: by Rachii Reads ☾ (new)

Rachii Reads ☾ | 12 comments Genre!! Mostly. My daughter and husband have separate sections of their own books they organize however they want 😂

message 22: by Morgan (new)

Morgan | 23 comments Well, right now I’m currently trying to figure out how to fit all my books in one bookcase. Not going well, so I decided to put all my fantasy in that bookshelf then order another one for plan romance, true crime, and historical fiction, and non fiction.

message 23: by Annabella (new)

Annabella | 24 comments I have a bookshelf w all my Sarah J Maas books, one for Harry Potter, one for other fantasy books and one for romance/thriller

message 24: by ✨bethany✨ (new)

✨bethany✨ | 18 comments Author’s surname, hands down. Although I’ve run out of bookshelf space so I have book towers dotted precariously around my living room and bedroom, and they’ve got their own system😂

message 25: by Breanna (new)

Breanna | 6 comments I’ve been a kindle reader for the longest time but now I’ve started to buy books and slowly grow my collection. I don’t have much organization as I don’t have many books. But one day I dream to have like an office with a huge bookshelf where I can keep all my books.

message 26: by Courtney (new)

Courtney Brice (foxbatspirit) | 5 comments I don’t have a book shelf right now, I’m in an rv, but i would have them alphabetically ordered.

message 27: by Addison :) (new)

Addison :) | 39 comments My bookshelf has four rows, the top row is all books i haven’t read, the next 2 are fantasy series in alphabetical order, and the last row is standalone books. Of course there is also books scattered around my room because there is never enough space lol.

message 28: by Lainey (new)

Lainey M. My real physical bookshelf I have sorted by authors last name (if there’s a series I have them sorted in order of the series). It’s the okay way my brain can comprehend my shelf lol

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

I just organize it by how good it looks. I usually put the best cover one facing out.

message 30: by Jordyn Lea (new)

Jordyn Lea | 1 comments I haphazardly organize them by series and by genre 📚 I just love the look of them being there in no particular order, as long as series, author, and genre are similar. Random new ones stacked on top because it’s time for a new bookshelf. 🙂🥰

message 31: by Mya (new)

Mya Marie (mya_marie) | 12 comments I like to put them in their series - nothing alphabetical. I like to stack some horizontal and some vertical to mix it up a bit but keep everything together that should be together.

And I am sorry to anyone here that does it, but I ABSOLUTELY DESPISE when people do it by colour 🤮 the rainbow bookshelves are the worst...

message 32: by Amber (new)

Amber Seay | 1 comments I have a depressingly small stack on the nightstand at the foot of my bed (don’t judge, my room is idly shaped and this nightstand sits next to my closet door 😂).

I don’t have a real life bookshelf yet, but I’ll need one soon.

Personally, I always think someone’s bookshelf organization is quite personal to what they like and what aesthetic they truly desire.

I can’t wait to find my style when I finally can afford my own bookshelf. Especially now that I have some SEs on the way. 🥰

message 33: by Madeline (new)

Madeline Ingram | 12 comments Series stay together but typically by favorites to least favorites

message 34: by Erica (new)

Erica House | 2 comments I organize my book shelf very differently than what most people do 🫠

With mine I organize by favorites, so the top shelf are my absolute favorite reads/ series and so forth! I also like to organize by series since I prefer a book series over a stand alone.

For example my top shelf right now consists of all the SJM universe ❤️ each series holds a special place in my heart since they were the books that started my love for fantasy!

I’m a HUGE physical book person and like to collect books so my book shelf full to the max 😂 all of my TBR books are stacked in a pile on the floor next to my book shelf just patiently waiting.

message 35: by Beth (new)

Beth | 26 comments I've totally overflowed my capacity and need to install library shelving or at least get a couple of those revolving bookcases that save space. But in general, I try to organize by author and series. The ones I loved best and may read again are most prominent and accessible. My TBR are in shelves and stacks in separate areas. I only read physical books so this has gotten totally out of hand.
