Jen K | 3143 comments Sister Agatha always felt like an outsider growing up without real idea of what to do with herself until she saw a group of sisters supporting each other at the her menial retail job. She always felt at peace a church and decided to join reveling in the sisterhood. Agatha joined a group of 3 other sisters and a mother caring for babies in an early childhood center but with the church continuously losing money, the four sisters are moved to Little Neon in RI to car for recovering addicts. Those in Little Neon had much different needs than the babies. Sister Agatha is chosen to teach Geometry at the local high school and finds herself on a different path than the 3 sisters she had shared everything with up to that point.

When Agatha starts having separate experiences from her sisters, she finds herself thinking different on their life, the church and their response to those in need at Little Neon. I enjoyed watching Agatha grow and while already adult, have a bit of a delayed coming of age to find herself outside of the sisterhood. There are some serious reflections on the Catholic Church and perhaps also on misguided charity, perhaps overly pointed. The audio did well with the language and flow of the story. I would read more of the author.

Jen K | 3143 comments Thanks Holly! I can see Agatha sticking with me as well. And poor Tim Gary.

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11090 comments I really enjoyed this book. Agatha’s story will stick with me too.

I read several books involving the Catholic Church in the last few years, and this one is quite different. There was a nun in my PhD program who had a fascinating life, and I think it would be interesting to read about other modern nuns. (Though that was decades ago, and I don’t think many women are entering that life now.) There was also a nun in Paradise Falls: The True Story of an Environmental Catastrophe. She was one of the activists who brought attention to Love Canal in the 1970’s.
