We only need an I and a C to finish the spellout - does anyone have a book that would work for that?

message 53: by Catsalive (last edited Apr 07, 2023 05:09AM) (new)

Catsalive | 1145 comments I moved an I & C down to the spell.

I think we need one I now, not sure how Eschatology and Christian Nurture fits there, Saige.

I'll read an I in case we need it.

message 54: by Catsalive (new)

Catsalive | 1145 comments I have put an I book in Banked books in case it's needed for the spell.

Sorry, I totally blanked when putting that book in for I. Idk what I was thinking, lmao. Thanks for banking that one, Catsalive, I posted it along with my last one for the spellout

Ashlyn | 5987 comments Is there anything that still needs to be read for?

message 58: by Ivelisse (last edited Apr 07, 2023 12:35PM) (new)

Ivelisse | 1436 comments I think for the most part we're good. We just have to check in in the next hour or so. Just have to make sure everyone has all of their books logged before checking in.

message 59: by Ivelisse (new)

Ivelisse | 1436 comments I show a count of 48 books on the spreadsheet and 47 in the review thread. I'm going to see which one is missing to make sure it gets accounted for

message 60: by Ashlyn (new)

Ashlyn | 5987 comments Thank you!

message 61: by Ashlyn (new)

Ashlyn | 5987 comments I also didn't add my page points book to the spreadsheet but it's on the review thread. So maybe there are two more?

message 62: by Ivelisse (last edited Apr 07, 2023 12:56PM) (new)

Ivelisse | 1436 comments I saw your page point book... I found the 2 missing and posted the review. I think we're good now!

message 63: by Ashlyn (new)

Ashlyn | 5987 comments Perfect thanks for looking and posting!

I think we can all check in now too!

This round will cover seven (7) days.

Start: April 8th at 12:00 AM (in your time zone)
End: April 14th at 11:59 PM (in your time zone)

Please check in on April 14th between 4:00 - 6:00 PM Eastern. This doesn’t mean you can stop reading for the round, it’s just the team checking in for bonus points.

Route Info: These will be generally easy tasks to complete for each leg of the race. This portion will have at least 15-20 tasks per leg. All repeatable.
1. Read a book set in Europe
2. Read a book with a red cover
3. Read a book with a white cover
4. Read a book set in a large city
5. Read a book with the word 'RED' and 'CROSS' found in text (pg/% & quote)
6. Read a book where the main character is bilingual
7. Read a book from an author that is from or currently lives in Switzerland
8. Read a book that has water on the cover (any edition works)
9. Read a book with the word 'GLACIAL' found in text (pg/% & quote)
10. Read a book that has mountains on the cover (any edition works)
11. Read a book where the title has the letters Z, U, R, I, C, H in it (in any order)
12. Read a book where the author's first and last initial are in SWITZERLAND
13. Read a book where the main characters first name starts with a letter in JURA
14. Read a book that is tagged '16th Century'
15. Read a book where the series title has the letters A, L, P, S in it (in any order)

Detours: This will be a list related task. Teams will have two lists to choose from and will need to read 5 books from one list. This can be completed by at least two people from a team (one person cannot complete this task).

Switzerland is the birthplace of the Red Cross, one of the world's oldest and best-known humanitarian organizations, and hosts the headquarters or offices of most major international institutions, including the WTO, the WHO, the ILO, FIFA, and the United Nations.

Read a book found on the Set in Switzerland Books or Humanitarian Books listopia

Roadblocks begin at line #225 on the spreadsheet tab. There’s about 6 spell-outs available - please let me know if you need more.

Roadblocks: This will be a spell-out task. Each team will get the same word. It can be completed as many times as you can. If you start a spell-out and don't complete it, you will be penalized by 5 bonus points per uncompleted word.
MONTE ROSA: ✤ MONTE ROSA
Monte Rosa (Italian: massiccio del Monte Rosa; German: Monte Rosa-Massiv; French: massif du Mont Rose) is a mountain massif in the eastern part of the Pennine Alps, on the border between Italy (Piedmont and Aosta Valley) and Switzerland (Valais).

Yield: Each team will have up to 3 yield opportunities (once per month). After the task has been revealed and read for, the team will then decide who to use their 'Yield' against. By yielding, you will be taking away 20 bonus points from that team.

The Matterhorn is a mountain of the Alps, straddling the main watershed and border between Switzerland and Italy.
If you want to use your yield this week - please read for the following:

Read a book that is set in at least two places (states/countries/etc.) and has the word 'SNOW' found in text (pg/% & quote)

Intersections: This will be a buddy read related task. Meaning you will have to work with someone new (whether on your team or another) and read a book together. The buddy can also be someone in the group but not participating in the challenge. You will need to have at least 4-5 comments per buddy read.

Read a book with someone new within the group. BOTM can also count for this task. This can be repeatable.

U-Turns: Just like the yield task, each team will have up to 3 U-turn opportunities (once per month). After the task has been revealed and read for, the team will then decide who to use their 'U-turn' against. By forcing another team into a U-turn, you will be taking away 10 bonus points from that team.

The Swiss climate is generally temperate, but can vary greatly across localities, from glacial conditions on the mountaintops to the near-Mediterranean climate at Switzerland's southern tip. Some valley areas in the southern part of Switzerland offer cold-hardy palm trees. Summers tend to be warm and humid at times with periodic rainfall, ideal for pastures/grazing. The less humid winters in the mountains may see weeks-long intervals of stable conditions.
If you want to use your U-turn this week - please read for the following:

Read a book that is set in the Mediterranean and has the word 'HUMID' found in text (pg/% & quote)

Speed Bumps: After check-in day, if your team was randomly selected for last place, you will have this task to complete. It will be a super easy task that one person can complete. For example, 'Red hair on cover (any book edition will count)' or 'Published in January (any year)'.

Read a book published in 2023 (any month - ARCs can be used as well)

Switchback: This will also be revealed after check-in days and will be a task related to where the team was previously.

The Pacific Coast Trail is about 2,650 miles long.

Read a book that has 3 of these numbers in the page count (ex: 265, 650, 250, etc.)

Not available at this portion of the challenge:

Ashlyn | 5987 comments For the Set in Switzerland Books, I can read up to 3 of these books. If anyone wants to buddy read them, let me know so we can double our points for the task:

The Book of Lost Names by Kristin Harmel

You all checked in! Here are the results for bonus points -

1. Coast Busters - 30 pts
2. Backroad Bandits - 20 pts
3. Shadow Sprinters - 10 pts

Winners were chosen via list randomizer and bonus points were decided in a wheel decide (other options were - 20,10,0; 30,15,5; 20,10,5).

Bonus points will be added in your next score update. Points are awarded for the whole team - not individually. Also, tasks for Speed Bumps and Switchback will be revealed tomorrow.

message 83: by Ashlyn (new)

Ashlyn | 5987 comments I think we have it covered, but if you want to read just in case, that would be fine. I might be camping next week, so not sure if I'll be able to post all my reviews by Friday if I end up not finishing the books by Monday.

message 84: by Ashlyn (new)

Ashlyn | 5987 comments I know everyone has already posted for the Spell Out, but maybe next week we should wait to post until we have all the letters? That way in case it doesn't work, we don't lose points.
