This round will cover seven (7) days.

Start: April 1st at 12:00 AM (in your time zone)
End: April 7th at 11:59 PM (in your time zone)

Please check in on April 7th between 4:00 - 6:00 PM Eastern. This doesn’t mean you can stop reading for the round, it’s just the team checking in for bonus points.

Route Info: These will be generally easy tasks to complete for each leg of the race. This portion will have at least 15-20 tasks per leg. All repeatable.
1. Read a book set in California
2. Read a book set in Oregon
3. Read a book set in Washington
4. Read a book set in Canada
5. Read a book with the word 'HORSE' found in text (pg/% & quote)
6. Read a book that features a natural disaster
7. Read a book from an author that is from or currently lives on the west coast
8. Read a book that has an outdoor scene on the cover (any edition works)
9. Read a book with the word 'VOLCANO' found in text (pg/% & quote)
10. Read a book that has an animal on the cover (any edition works)
11. Read a book where the title has the letters B,E,A,R in it (in any order)
12. Read a book where the author's first and last initial are in MOUNTAIN
13. Read a book where the main character rides a bike
14. Read a book with an MPG of ADVENTURE
15. Read a book where the series title has the letters H,I,K,I,N,G in it (in any order)

Detours: This will be a list related task. Teams will have two lists to choose from and will need to read 5 books from one list. This can be completed by at least two people from a team (one person cannot complete this task).

The Pacific Crest Trail, the Appalachian Trail, and the Continental Divide Trail form what is known as the Triple Crown of Hiking in the United States. Read a book found on the Pacific Crest Trail Books or Hiking Books listopia

Roadblocks begin at line #225 on the spreadsheet tab. There’s about 6 spell-outs available - please let me know if you need more.

Roadblocks: This will be a spell-out task. Each team will get the same word. It can be completed as many times as you can. If you start a spell-out and don't complete it, you will be penalized by 5 bonus points per uncompleted word.
PACIFIC CREST TRAIL: ✤ PACIFIC CREST TRAIL
The Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), officially designated as the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail, is a long-distance hiking and equestrian trail closely aligned with the highest portion of the Cascade and Sierra Nevada mountain ranges, which lie 100 to 150 miles (160 to 240 km) east of the U.S. Pacific coast.

Yield: Each team will have up to 3 yield opportunities (once per month). After the task has been revealed and read for, the team will then decide who to use their 'Yield' against. By yielding, you will be taking away 20 bonus points from that team.

The Bridge of the Gods is a steel truss cantilever bridge that spans the Columbia River between Cascade Locks, Oregon, and Washington state near North Bonneville.
If you want to use your yield this week - please read for the following:

Read a book that is MPG Mythology and has water on the cover (i.e., river, lake, etc.)

Intersections: This will be a buddy read related task. Meaning you will have to work with someone new (whether on your team or another) and read a book together. The buddy can also be someone in the group but not participating in the challenge. You will need to have at least 4-5 comments per buddy read.

Read a book with someone new within the group. BOTM can also count for this task. This can be repeatable.

U-Turns: Just like the yield task, each team will have up to 3 U-turn opportunities (once per month). After the task has been revealed and read for, the team will then decide who to use their 'U-turn' against. By forcing another team into a U-turn, you will be taking away 10 bonus points from that team.

Forester Pass is a mountain pass in the Sierra Nevada. Located on the Kings-Kern Divide and on the boundary between Sequoia National Park and Kings Canyon National Park, Forester Pass connects the drainages of Bubbs Creek (a tributary of the South Fork Kings River) and the Kern River.
If you want to use your u-turn this week - please read for the following:

Read a book that is set in Nevada and has the word 'KING' found in text (pg/% & quote)

Not available at this portion of the challenge:
(view spoiler)

Catsalive | 1145 comments I'm thinking the Hiking Books List offers more scope, unless there are a couple of people here who are particularly interested in the Pacific Crest Trail.

message 27: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (servina) I finished a route book

I'll see if I can find something on the hiking list. I was having trouble finding something I can check out when I looked the other day.

I think if anyone is going to read for the list they should announce it or put a place marker on the spreadsheet, so we don't overread it.

message 28: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (servina) Ok I found one. I'm going to add it to the spreadsheet.

message 29: by Leslie Ann (new)

Leslie Ann Please check in on April 7th between 4:00 - 6:00 PM Eastern
FYI: This is my sister’s birthday and we are traveling to Waco. We are going to Magnolia Farms on this day. I will do my best to check in during this time span…. Fingers crossed. I think Waco is on central time so 3-5 Pm….

message 30: by Leslie Ann (new)

Leslie Ann Found a book on the list , will add to ss

message 31: by Catsalive (last edited Apr 03, 2023 04:35PM) (new)

Catsalive | 1145 comments I can read Bryson's A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail from the Hiking List. I need a W book anyway.

Added to the SS.

message 32: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (servina) I finished my hiking book and found another.

We need 1 more for the Detour to make that 5 books.

message 33: by Ivelisse (new)

Ivelisse | 1436 comments I'll read one! I found one.

message 34: by Ashlyn (new)

Ashlyn | 5987 comments We still need to spell out Pacific Crest Trail too. I think we have an L already.

message 35: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (servina) Ashlyn wrote: "We still need to spell out Pacific Crest Trail too. I think we have an L already."

What is more important? Route or Roadblocks? I could move my first book down to P

message 36: by Ashlyn (new)

Ashlyn | 5987 comments I think we loose points if we don’t spell the roadblock

message 37: by Alaina (last edited Apr 04, 2023 03:20PM) (new)

Alaina (ameserole) | 81936 comments Mod
You only lose points if a word isn't completely spelled. if you don't touch them, you don't gain or lose points.

message 38: by Saige (new)

Saige (lannister807) | 3844 comments Mod
Lol, well we've committed now. I'll have a few books with lots of letters finished in the next day or so and I'll fit them into whatever slots are left

message 39: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (servina) I was asking because I see quite a few that could be used for the road block that are used in the route. Is there a number required for the route?

message 40: by Catsalive (last edited Apr 04, 2023 07:12PM) (new)

Catsalive | 1145 comments Not committed, necessarily. If the word isn't completed by the end of the round you just take all the books off the spell & fit them elsewhere.

I've put 2 books in the spell section only because they didn't fit anywhere else. If we complete the word, good, if not, they'd have been wasted anyway.

message 41: by Jodi (new)

Jodi | 12 comments I’m sorry to do this… but I need to withdraw from this challenge and my others. I thought I was going to have time but some unexpected life issues have arose and I have to put my focus in other places. Best wishes and maybe I’ll see you down the road!

message 42: by Ivelisse (new)

Ivelisse | 1436 comments I'm sorry to see you go Jodi... wish you the best!

message 43: by Saige (new)

Saige (lannister807) | 3844 comments Mod
Bye Jodi! Hope everything is ok.

Also, I made a banked tab on the SS. If folks have books that don't fit anything at the moment, put them on there and we can post them for later rounds. Also, please include a review link if you can so others can post your books for you if they see where that book might fit

message 44: by Leslie Ann (new)

Leslie Ann I had to remove my book for the detour… won’t get to it. I should finish my spellout book tomorrow. I am flying to Texas in the morning for my sister’s 70th birthday so I can finish on the plane. I will check in my finished book tomorrow night. : )

message 45: by Ivelisse (new)

Ivelisse | 1436 comments Thank you Leslie...

Does someone have another detour book? I can do an audiobook but will not start it until tomorrow.

message 46: by Catsalive (new)

Catsalive | 1145 comments Who read Puppy for Daddy? There's no name against it.

Don't forget to post in the review thread.

message 48: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (servina) I finished my Detour book.

Ivelisse, if you start your book tomorrow, will you finish it tomorrow too?

I know I won't have time for another before tomorrow.

message 49: by Ashlyn (new)

Ashlyn | 5987 comments Just posted for the Intersections task.

message 50: by Ashlyn (new)

Ashlyn | 5987 comments I can also quickly read one tomorrow if need be for the Detour.
