Welcome to the library scavenger hunt! The books you read for this challenge MUST be checked out from the library. They may be hard copies (paperback or hardcover), audiobooks, or ebooks, and books borrowed via library apps such as Libby and CloudLibrary count.

Feel free to mix and match and do them as many times as you want.

Note: This challenge pairs well with our 18-month Library Adventure challenge and our year-long Love the Library challenge.

Rules
* no page minimum
* rereads are allowed
* any format is allowed

Read a book from the…
1. Dewey Decimal System
2. Young Adult Section
3. Juvenile Section
4. Children’s Section
5. Adult Fiction Section
6. Large Print Section
7. Audiobook Collection
8. Ebook Collection
9. End Cap (books found on display on the end cap of shelving units)
10. Special Display (this could be seasonal, holiday, new books, or a “local authors” display, anything that your library features throughout the challenge time) -- Tell us what sort of special display it was, if it had a label.

Edit: For those who don't have End Cap or Special Displays: Choose an extra book from your most challenging of the other tasks to replace the task you have no access to.

For example, if I didn't have an End Cap option, I could read a second Dewey Decimal System book.

For those who don't have End Cap or Special Displays: Choose an extra book from your most challenging of the other tasks to replace the task you have no access to.

Karen and Loraine, thank you for the heads-up on the missing options at your libraries. See the previous comment for an alternate option. I'm adding this also to the challenge instructions.

They should be physical books.

Thanks for the clarification. Related question - for #7, I'm assuming they can be an eAudiobook, book on CD or Playaway. Is this correct?

message 17: by Loraine (new)

Loraine (librarydiva) | 4439 comments Oh!! I didn't know they had to be physical books as many of mine already listed came from the library's hoopla collection. If they have to be physical, then I will bow out of this challenge.

Karen, I’m not sure what Playaway is, but any audios work for #7.

Karen and Loraine, let’s actually change that back to any book works. I reread my own rules and noticed I said it could be any format. So sorry for the confusion! It’s been a busy year, and I completely forgot what I had said. My intention with this challenge was to explore a physical library, but I did give room for exploring an electronic one as well. I am so sorry for forgetting I had done that and not double-checking that before clarifying. Many apologies! Please feel free to use books from the electronic equivalent of the assigned sections as well as physical.

Thanks Andrea! Our small town library has gone to many digital books in order to stretch their budget as far as possible since it doesn't have a lot of space and the last two attempts to get more money have not passed during elections.

message 21: by Karen (new)

Karen | 1319 comments Thanks, Andrea - since we've been traveling for months, my only option has been digital library books (and I've read lots!)

I plan to get physical books after we return, so mine will be a mix of both.

Karen | 1319 comments With only a few days left in the year, I'm going to call this one. I completed 7 of the 10 areas.

Many Thanks to Andrea for this challenge - it made me explore my library with fresh eyes. Even though I didn't finish all the areas, I will be paying more attention to those three areas in the future. In particular, I will be exploring Young Adult books in some 2024 challenges and I look forward to trying some large print books and paying more attention to special displays.

Katrina Lybbert | 886 comments I have finished! The last book I read was from the Young Adult section of the library. There are not many in that section that I enjoy, but by perusing the shelves I found a book by an Indigenous author based on the life of his 4th great grandfather. It was very informative and enjoyable. I had to ask the Goodreads librarians to add it to Goodreads. If it wasn't for this challenge I would never have found the book.

Overall this year I have read 169 books and 104 of those were from the library. So while I read many more than listed in this challenge, I did complete at least one from each category.

1. Dewey Decimal System
House Jungle Turn Your Home into a Plant-Filled Paradise! by Annie Dornan-Smith (Nov 18/23)
