The Only One Left
question
Thoughts on the ending?

I absolutely ADORE this book. I found the plot incredibly intriguing and I was proven right when I devoured page after page (I could not put it down!!) However, I read the reviews and noticed that the negative ones centered around the excessive plot twists toward the end. I was wondering what you all think about the plot twists at the end. I found them to be shocking mid-way through but by the end, they did just become confusing and repetitive. Thoughts???

Honestly, this is one of my favorite things about Riley Sager. Came for the mystery, stayed for the absolute sheer chaos. His books are roller coasters and they are a delight. I know it's not for everyone, but the way I see it, it's fiction, not true crime. Idc if the plot twists are unbelievable. The further out in left field we get, the better, IMO.
Ugh- I did not like the ending at all. I thought it was a hot mess and it would have been SO MUCH BETTER if he hadn't tried so hard to make twists where they just didn't belong! I was so disappointed because I thought it was going to be a 5-star mystery and it just fell apart at the end.
I hated, hated the ending. I saw a review that said it seemed like he had 7 options for the ending and ended up choosing all of them. The fact that Kit's dad ended up being the father of Virginia's baby was soooo unbelievable and then Jessie is her grand daughter?
The twist should have ended at the realization that Ms Baker was Lenora, every twist after that was unneccesary and made the book stink in my opinon.

I agree with Sadie. You can't think too hard with Sager's books -- they are just lots of fun to read. I liked the news paper article at the end. I thought it wrapped everything up quite nicely.
I thought the ending was great. The book was brilliantly written. My jaw literally hit the floor when all the truths were reviled at the end. It only made reading up to that point worth it. One of the best books I read this year so far.
I loved the ending! Although - I saw it coming! I couldn't stop reading this - Loved it so much! Didn't think Riley Sager could top home before dark but here we are! I agree with some other comments its not true crime🤣 The writing near the end was a bit messy but I still loved it!
Can someone please tell me who her son is? Did I miss that in the book?!
One thing I don't understand about the ending is why did Jessie and Virginia have to leave in the middle of the night without telling Kit ? That felt a little bit weird thing to do. Virginia had been trustworthy so there wouldn't be any reason not to trust her?
I loved the book except for the fact that the caregiver's father was Virginia's kid's dad😂 that felt like it came out of nowhere
I was so confused leading up to the ending- can she really move? Did she really walk? Like someone said previously- writing was a little messy but it was still a great read.
I absolutely loved this book. I have recommended it to everyone I know who reads thrillers.
I was hesitant starting the book because it was almost a slow-burn. But holy cow, it all came together perfectly! There were spots in this book where I would have to go back and re-read a few pages to not be confused, but it made it all the more interesting. The twists and turns, the mind games this book plays! I loveddddd the ending, I am so glad she got to go and travel, to do all the things she wanted to do!
But the whole Patrick and Ricardo really threw me for a loop!
Although I loved this ending, I would definitely be interested in reading an alternative ending, just to see what the author could come up with.

I just finished and ran to Goodreads to confirm I am not insane in thinking this ending was laughable. Threw everything at the wall and it all stuck! Look I love bad movies that you can laugh at and have fun with your friends watching but books cannot be this insane bc it takes days to finish and you are most commonly reading alone. Just because something is surprising, does not make it a good twist. If you can backtrack and see how the pieces add up then that's a good twist! Yes it would be surprising if a huge elephant stormed into the mansion, but it is NOT a good twist. I will admit the two Ricky's caught me by surprise, but VERY disappointed Ricky wasn't just a Bisexual King scammer, THAT would have made this 10/10.
The story started off interesting but there are still so many questions and thoughts I have after that terrible ending so I must post them here, please add any insight because I am not reading this again.
Burning Question: Her dad full blown murdered a person because they asked for a blood test???? What did he think the blood test would prove? That he was Virginia's boyfriend when he was a teenager?! They are not related my love, aren't you a nurse??? He fully says he did not think she knew about the murder but she knew enough?? Enough of what, even if she knew about the murder that conviction would be pretty tough my guy. What in the hell did Mary/Ricky think that that blood would prove, truly someone needs to tell me.
Thoughts:
-Girl, you are very much still responsible for your mothers death. You could have left out 1 pill for her... you left out the whole bottle that is criminally irresponsible and you should feel guilty even though your dad is a prolific (boringly straight) serial killer. Am I wrong on this? If the dad had broken into the lock box that would be diff but she did leave them out...
-Suicide was incredibly overused in the plot and it just felt icky. This is a very serious thing and the only one that felt real and fleshed out was Kit's mothers. By the time we got to Lenora's I was genuinely pissed off. Very disappointing to use it as a device multiple times for the sake of "twist".
-love that this certified weirdo who only progressed to the maturity of a 16 y/o took her dwindling finances, got herself legally declared alive with very little evidence, got her crazy ass book published to instant critical acclaim and financial success and then took her old ass to Antarctica. Good for her! hope your gay bestie that saved your life at least got a damn postcard while you sat out the AIDs crisis in the south or France or wherever!!!! #ally #slaymama

I thought the ending was just okay :/ Kinda meh. At least it was kind of a happy ending :)
Not only was the ending unbelievable but it's just tooo much. Kit's father was Virginia's long lost lover? Seriously😭? And Virginia could walk and talk all this while? Whyy
