Sophie wrote: " I've been bad about completions over the weekend."

or good about being present with family at weekends ;-)

Though as I've been busy plowing though various royalty books (they have Turf Wars dresses!), a leeetle frustrating!

That said, I am reading The Italian Woman (Catherine de Medici, #2) by Jean Plaidy , which features royalty, and - though not hit it yet - am sure that "take advantage" will happen - possibly the fact that one of the MCs is married off for political convenience despite her strenuous objections fits?

message 305: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8304 comments I can grab a short non-fic listen any time, but won't claim it just yet. :)

First I'll try to finish my current reads.

message 306: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12885 comments A book about a Medici? Definitely advantage will be taken. I'm pretty sure that family invented the practice 😂

If a Medici hasn't taken advantage are they even worthy of the name?

message 309: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12885 comments Nope. They'd be disinherited, I'm sure.

message 310: by Sophie, The other one (new)

I don't know why, but I'm not settling into Turfs. It's not sparking my normal competitive must just read off the list for the most points spirit.

message 311: by Sammy (last edited Sep 11, 2023 09:29AM) (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12885 comments I think for me, because it's such a looooooong challenge, I'm happy to read anything that's on the list that's on my tbr anyway, and I prioritise those, but I'm not going out of my way to read stuff I normally wouldn't. Except for the odd re-read of a really short book, though no idea how long I'll keep that up for!

message 312: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10098 comments Mod
This edition I've been fairly lucky with the lists, in that I've had books on there that I want to read (the dresses list has cleared out a few from the closet, for instance), but I do find it's kinda down to how well I am getting on with the lists, otherwise I treat it as a semi-passive challenge - I'll read what I like, and if they're lucky it'll get points.
Helps that we have a friendly Shelf Stalker in Angie, who makes sure to snaffle up any books that slip through the cracks.

message 313: by Sophie, The other one (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 5687 comments Mod
Thinking about it more, it's also the lack of warning on what the tasks are before the start of a round. There's no sense of 'I can start that longer book because I know it'll get points next round' instead it feels like a lot of short last minute challenges.

message 314: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12885 comments Yeah, I'm a compulsive planner and right now I'm climbing the walls waiting for the next tasks. I am about to finish my last book for this round, and am going to have to pick a book without knowing if it'll be of any use. Makes me uncomfortable, lol.

message 315: by Sophie, The other one (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 5687 comments Mod
I'm not a massive planner, but the last minute notice and time limit makes me twitchy.

message 316: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8304 comments Finished off Argus and got a new Greek monster, Stymphalian Birds.

Could be worse, I guess. :)

1) 350 to 450
2) #6 in series
3) musical instrument mention in text
4) something metal on cover
5) features a bird (bird shifter accepted)

message 317: by Melindam (last edited Sep 14, 2023 12:23AM) (new)

Melindam | 8304 comments Also, it is worth mentioning that we already finished off 21 monsters, so well done us! 🥰🎉🎊

There's barbed wire on the cover - in her body - if you are all OK with that. is 400 pages. not found an instrument yet, but not into the swing of that yet - time to warm up?!

message 319: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8304 comments Currently I have 2 books on the sheet, but feel free to remove them, if you finish books that would work for the slots.

Next Monday I'll have a minor operation and will stay home for 2 weeks afterwards, so I'll have more time to finish books.

Melindam | 8304 comments Cat/Sophie,

I have a favour to ask. I may have botched my Wheels sign-up. I meant to give my book/week count as 3 and I am not sure whether I did that or if went with giving the book/month count, which is 12.

Could you please have a look when you have the time?

Many thanks.

I don't know if Cat changed it, but you are showing with 3 a week.

Penny-wise has come to play.

350-400
Something you are afraid of on cover (your interpretation)
Compound word in title
Author initials PC or CP (First and last only)
"Tagged ""circus"" (5 or more times)"

message 327: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10098 comments Mod
I'm reading Station Eternity (The Midsolar Murders, #1) by Mur Lafferty which has wasps on it.

Also The Secrets of Hartwood Hall - Hartwood is compound word (Hart = deer / Wood = small area of moderately dense tree plantings) - this is 352 pages, so fits two.

Circus and CP / PC initials not to hand though

message 328: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12885 comments Dang it! I have a Peter Clines series still to read, but only have books 3 & 4 (still waiting for an audible deal/offer on the first 2).

If no-one else has anything to fit, I may be able to re-read another of his books later in the week...

No circuses that I'm looking to read any time soon...

I've got Caraval which is tagged Circus which I can read.

Killer Pancake A Culinary Murder Mystery (Goldy Schulz Book 5) by Diane Mott Davidson
there's blood on the cover, isn't there? If so, I can take that task, when I've finished one of my other books on the sheet.

I'll pop it in, with a note that I can be bumped :)

message 332: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12885 comments Works for me for blood :)

Would we consider this: Talkin' Trash (Bear Bottom Guardians MC, #2) by Lani Lynn Vale to work for torso?

message 333: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10098 comments Mod
I would say that works for torso :)

message 334: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12885 comments Awesome. I may also have something for Mythology...

message 336: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12885 comments I'm hoping so, but guess I won't know until I read them.

message 337: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8304 comments Sophie, if tgere's nothing else, I can reread The amazing Maurice and its educated rodents. :)

message 338: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12885 comments Why didn't I even think of that one??

message 339: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8304 comments For author so far I found Chuck Palahniuk, but honestly, I am not mad about the idea :)

message 340: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8304 comments And I totally refuse to read anything by Christopher Paolini, sorry for being a negative N about it.

Cat (cat_uk) | 10098 comments Mod
Other rat: Flowers for Algernon.

@Mel, his recent sci-fi one, Sea of Stars or something, wasn't bad, but I could never put myself through his Eragon books. I read the first when it came out and thought it was appallingly derivative and dull, and that was years ago, so I can't imagine being filled with love and joy over them now!

Will continue to ponder CP etc authors

message 342: by Sophie, The other one (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 5687 comments Mod
Rodent is sorted and it's KU. 1st chapter was v readable which was a welcome change from Eon. Hard sci fi is not my thing.

message 343: by Sophie, The other one (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 5687 comments Mod
CP/PC I'll think on. There's bound to be a romance novelist called Charlotte or Catherine with a P surname.

message 344: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8304 comments I read Eragon and hated that it was a sequence of blatant and poor rip-offs from first page to last. :)

I thought of Peter Carey and Paolo Coelho, but .... just no. Will do some more searching.
