Q & A
Each time we complete a goal do we get the points according to the assessment of the task/goal and the book points? (e.g. spelling out two words would be 2xgoal points & #of books x 0.5)
Only four goals give you book points (at 0.5 per book) plus the goal points - those are Series Catch Up, Spell Outs, Scavenger Hunts and Clean up that TBR list.
Complete a challenge. - How does this work? You do not need to post any books read to complete a challenge. Just name the challenge and the date you completed it. We trust you.
Series catch up. - Do we need to complete the series or will any attempt at getting forward count? You do not need to complete the series to get the goal and book points. Any forward progress counts!
Buddy reads Have no fear! The Buddy Reads thread is still open AND there is a *NEW*NEW*NEW* Banned Book Challenge coming next year that will give you plenty of opportunity to have a buddy read since I will be reading them all.
Spell outs. Do we get points for incomplete words too, or do we have to complete every letter to get any points at all? You get points for the books on incomplete spell outs. You get points for the goal when you finish the spell out (in addition to the books).
Scavenger Hunt. There are LOTS of individual scavenger hunts but the folder is somewhat lower down the list and may be harder to find. Look here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
New author This goal can be completed more than once.
Clean up that TBR list. Shouldn't this be a one-time goal? This goal actually should only be claimed once but you get 0.5 points per book that you assign to it. There must be at least one book assigned to this goal in order to claim the goal points. Books can only be assigned to one goal so this is kind of a default, "it doesn't fit anywhere else" bucket.
How many genres are there? There are many lists of genres. If you're looking for some new ones to try you might consult these lists:
https://jerryjenkins.com/book-genres/....
https://self-publishingschool.com/boo...
https://brookevitale.com/blog/book-ge...
What counts as a game challenge?
A challenge will be considered a game if there are teams that play against each other (like Halloween Roundup) or against something else (like Us vs. Godzilla). Hangman doesn't really have teams but it is a game people play and it requires a collective effort. It was mentioned to clarify that it is limited because it is a fairly rapid cycling game. In contrast, the marathon challenge isn't structured as a game because participants and relay teams aren't scored. It's more of an event than a game.
How do I score my Scavenger Hunts?
Let's say you rated a Scavenger Hunt as a 2 in level of difficulty/interest. There are currently 6 Scavenger Hunts listed in the folder. 3 of them run through December but it's possible people may be working to finish some of the older Scavenger Hunts that "ended" in September or October, for instance.
So you will score 2 points for any Scavenger Hunt fully completed during this challenge, including any of the older Scavenger Hunts where maybe you were still looking for a book or two to finish up. You will also score 0.5 points for any book finished during this challenge - but not for books completed in November or earlier.

1. Do I understand it correctly that each time we complete a goal we get the points according to the assessment of the task/goal and the book points? (e.g. spelling out two words would be 2xgoal points & #of books x 0.5)
2. Complete a challenge. - How does this work. Do we have to list all books needed to complete the challenge (actually preventing to use those for other tasks) or only the last one?
3. Series catch up. - Do we need to complete the series or will any attempt at getting forward count?
4. Buddy reads. - Since there’s no BOM in this group anymore and I had not much luck finding buddies/complete planned buddy reads in this group would you accept those from different groups?
I’m aware the rules say no but I’m still looking for a way to complete this goal if possible.
5. Spell outs. - Do we get points for incomplete words too, or do we have to complete every letter to get any points at all?
6. Scavenger Hunt. - Is there a solo scavenger hunt? I’ve only seen the team challenge.
7. New author & Clean up that TBR list! - Could it be that these goals can’t be completed more than once? Or do we get the goal assessment points + 0.5 points for each book we read here?

Winter 2024 Bookish Ambitions - with a twist!
Duration: December 1, 2023 - February 29, 2024
Progress: 0 out of 1+
We've updated this challenge to put a bit of zing into it! Read on...
Rules:
140 page limit
Re-reads are allowed
You may use a book that you have started prior to the quarter provided you are less than 25% done reading the book when the challenge starts.
First you will HONESTLY ASSESS the likelihood of your doing any of the following nine goals. You will score points for goals accomplished as follows:
1 pt = This is a goal I do all the time and would do anyway.
2 pts = This is a goal I do sometimes but not necessarily always.
3 pts = This is a goal I don't do very often - it's happened but not much.
4 pts = This is a goal I avoid. If must do it I will but it is hard for me.
Post the point value you assign to the different kinds of goals and then keep track of how many points you can rack up! Points may only be scored for books read for and challenges participated in here at The Challenge Factory. Goals may be repeated.
Important: Each book read may only be used for one of the goals even if it satisfies more than one goal's requirements. So choose carefully where you use that book to maximize its value!
Goals:
1. Complete a challenge.
2. Series catch up. Select a series you want to focus on bringing current. Earn 0.5 points per book you finish in the series in addition to the points you have assigned for this goal in your assessment of how much you do/do not like to do it.
3. Buddy reads. Participate in a buddy read or group read.
4. Participate in a game challenge. If you drop out of the game before it's over you score no points. The Hangman game may be used for just 1 point for the duration of this challenge regardless of how much you participate.
5. Spell outs. Spell out any word that you associate with the Winter season. Complete a spell out using the first letter of a title or the first initial of an author's first or last name. Score 0.5 points per book read for the Spell Out in addition to the points you have assigned for this goal in your assessment of how much you do/do not like to do it.
6. Scavenger Hunt. Earn 0.5 points per book you finish in the challenge in addition to the points you have assigned for this goal in your assessment of how much you do/do not like to do it.
7. New author. Read a book by an author who is new to you.
8. New genre. Read a book from a genre you have never tried, or from a genre you normally don't read.
9. Clean up that TBR list! Score 0.5 points per book read for this in addition to the points you have assigned for this goal in your assessment of how much you do/do not like to do it.
*Score one Extra Point for any of the following you find during this Read-a-Thon:
1. A book where the MC eats or makes cookies.
2. A book where some of the characters play ice hockey.
3. A book written by an indigenous author (of any nation).
4. A book where heavy snowfall occurs.
5. A book with a cover that is more than 75% white.
Example format:
My assessment of goals:
Complete a challenge = 1 pt.
Series catch up = 2 pts.
Buddy or group read = 4 pts.
Game challenge = 1 pt.
Spell out = 3 pts.
Scavenger hunt = 2 pts.
New author = 1 pt.
New genre = 4 pts.
TBR Clean up = 1 pt.
I read two books to catch up on my Maisie Dobbs series. I would score a total of 3 pts - 2 pts. for the goal itself and 0.5 pts. for each of the two books read.
I read a book with heavy snowfall in it which gives me an Extra Point - and it also is a new author for me. I can score 2 pts. for this book because the Extra Points are just that - extra!

There was a great question about Scavenger Hunt scoring that has been posted to the Q & A above.

I assume the same limit as Hangman would apply to Dominoes if we participate in that game?

Winter 2024 Bookish Ambitions
Duration: December 1, 2023 - February 29, 2024
