Nickronomicon | 179 comments So first up will be Old Virginia? It's one of my favorites from this collection. I look forward to reading it again and seeing what I missed!

Paula (pad1069) | 57 comments That's fine with me. It's a wonderful story, very well written and really, really weird!

ok, I bought this and will start on it this week.

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

Excellent. I'll read Old Virginia (again) and jump right in on the 1st.

message 6: by [deleted user] (new)

One a week. I should be able to keep up with that. :)

message 7: by Char (new)

Char | 17464 comments Most excellent! This should be fun. :)

message 8: by [deleted user] (new)

So we said April 1st we would be starting right? I went ahead and read Old Virginia (the first story) yesterday.

This is my second time reading this collection, the first time being only a few months ago so it is all pretty fresh in my mind. Normally I wouldn't want to re-read something so soon, but I really loved the collection and I love the idea of reading a short story collection at this one-story-per-week pace.

As far as my impressions of this story: (contains mild spoilers from The Croning also) (view spoiler)

message 9: by Char (new)

Char | 17464 comments Yes we did, Andy! It's our official start day! I'm not peeking at your spoiler yet. :)

Old Virginia

There is so much pleasure to be had."

Some of his lines remind me so much of the sinobites.

Char | 17464 comments The last line of Old Virginia chilled me to the bone.

Clarissa (clarissamoreno_) I want to do it too! It's the first time I've joined a group that actually reads awesome books. I'll catch up!

It’s been a while since I read “Old Virginia”, a nice mixture of modern tropes with older, Lovecraftian ones. But, yes, I still remember the power of the last line. (view spoiler)

And that is the truth. 5 stars from me too!

I don't see any connection other than the character of Strauss. Did I miss any other connection to Barron's work? (I've only read The Beautiful Thing That Awaits Us All: Stories and The Croning.)

I think it's just a shared world or worlds with some characters that appear in several stories. Maybe there will be an overall thread through all the stories but I haven't deciphered that as of yet.

message 22: by Ctgt (new)

Ctgt | 765 comments After ransacking the house the other night looking for my copy I figured out that I had loaned it to friend and I'm still waiting for him to return it. In other words I may be a bit behind for the next week or so. Although I think this first story is online somewhere so I'll try to track it down that way.

Ctgt | 765 comments BTW this website gives a nice rundown of his work with dates

See here for links to some of Barron’s freely available stories including “Old Virginia”.

Char | 17464 comments Sweet! Thanks for the links you two!

message 26: by Bill (new)

Bill (shiftyj1) | 4891 comments I concur that was a chilling last line. Laird is very good at throwing out little tidbits (usually just a sentence or two in length) that really paint something dark on the imagination. A very good opening story.

I thought I wanted to be but now I'm scared. I bought some self help books to read in between these stories so I could change my mind, or lose it; we'll see.

Oh myyyyy.
(view spoiler) Loved the outcome, but I thought it took too long to get there, which is okay. I don't mind a slow burn, but the burn needs to be interesting. This one was only moderately interesting. I love the premise and subject matter. Love the payoff. Meh, regarding the buildup. C+++
