This novel is hard to describe without giving too much away, but I will try. It is set in a dystopian near future where technology has advanced, but the environment has deteriorated. There are very few animals and lots of canola fields. Junior and Henrietta are a married couple living in a rural area. One evening a man representing the OuterMore Corporation arrives and says Junior has been selected as a candidate for an experimental two-year assignment at a space station. The story focuses mostly on the relationship between the couple and how it is impacted by the man (and, by inference, the corporation). It is told from Junior’s perspective and structured as a three-act play. There is plenty of inner and outer dialogue. It bogs down just a bit in Act II but mostly flows well. The atmosphere is claustrophobic. The reader knows something is not quite right, which creates a sense of foreboding and tension. It is not gory or gruesome – more unsettling or disturbing. I found it fascinating and would definitely read another book by this author.
