gem | 2620 comments If a book is published by Barnes & Noble Press, is the Barnes & Noble website considered a valid source for book data and/or the cover image?

message 2: by Martin (new)

Martin | 35320 comments No, it is specifically listed as not acceptable at https://help.goodreads.com/s/article/...

message 3: by gem (new)

gem | 2620 comments Understood, however I was wondering if books published by B&N Press would be exempt from that rule since in those cases B&N (or its subsidiary) is the publisher.

I've seen some instances where Librarians add book data + cover, or just book data, so there's some confusion about how to interpret the manual.

message 4: by ♪ Kim N (new)

♪ Kim N (crossreactivity) | 9394 comments My understanding is that we can add the books, but we can't take data/cover from the B&N site. For example, user can provide data and cover from their personal copy.

message 5: by Martin (new)

Martin | 35320 comments At the bottom of the document I linked above is a list 'Sites that are not acceptable to use', on that list is 'Barnes & Noble', where is the confusion in interpreting that?
Maybe my autistic mind causing problems again but I can only read that one way.

Barnes & Noble editions can be added but an acceptable source would be required for all data and cover.

Hi all. Kim N and Martin are correct in that currently B&N is not a valid source for book data and covers. However, I can see why this might be different exclusively for books published by B&N Press as in this case B&N is acting as a publisher, and publishers are permitted sources.

Gem - I'm checking in with the team on this one. I'll update this thread on the outcome, and will add a group announcement and update the Librarian Manual if anything changes.

Linde | 6549 comments Ah, I added a book from B&N Press, as I indeed thought the "Publishers" part overruled the "bookseller"/"B&N" part. And it was possible to buy the book, I didn't need to be a member or to login.

Following this.

Thanks for your patience while I found more information on this.

Unfortunately, we won't be making any changes to our stance on B&N and so it is still not permitted as a cover and data source. This includes for books published by B&N Press.

In these cases the member will need to provide all information from their own book, such as a cover scan.

Thank you for double-checking, gem!

Hi team. I've been in further conversation with the team about this.

As B&N Press titles are only sold on B&N and therefore the retail site is the only direct source from that publisher, we are permitted to use B&N as a cover and data source for these titles. So:

B&N can be used as a cover and data source, but only for B&N Press titles.

I've updated the Librarian Manual article for Acceptable Sources.
