Everyman | 7718 comments Our discussion of Pilgrim's Progress starts in a week, but as usual I'll put up the reading schedule and a background/resources topic ahead of the start of the discussion.

The reading schedule is a bit of a challenge because PP has two parts, but within the parts Bunyan apparently didn't use chapter or section divisions. Some editions do have some breaks, but they aren't uniform. A copy I got from the library has "stages" in it, but the Gutenberg copy (which I can't access at the moment, I certainly hope it's just a temporary glitch and that the side isn't disappearing) doesn't, and nor does my 1919 copy or the Oxford World Classics copy. So we'll have to divide it by internal events.

Sorry I have to give some minor spoilers to identify the breaks, but that's how it goes.

We're going to take three weeks to do Part 1 and two weeks to do Part 2. We have divided them into as nearly equal parts as we could find appropriate breaks for, so if you divide your part 1 pages into three roughly equal sections and your part 2 pages into 2 roughly equal sections, then look close to those page breaks, you should find our discussion breaks fairly easily. I've given the pages for the Oxford World Classics (OWC) edition. If people have other editions than the OWC, please indicate your edition and the page break numbers for others who have that edition.

Week 1: Author's Apology through Christian going to sleep in the chamber called Peace. For Gutenberg (assuming it comes back) search for "chamber was peace." OWC edition pages 1-53

Week 2: Start when Christian wakes up and sings "Where am I now? is this the love and care...
End when By-Ends and Demas fall into the Pit (the Silver Mine) and are never seen again. In Gutenberg search for "But this I observed, that they was never seen again in the way." (G might have corrected was to were?) OWC pages 53-105

Week 3: Starts with Christian singing "By-ends, and Silver-Demas, both agree..." and runs through the end of Part 1. OWC pages 105-165

Week 4: Start of Part 2 through their arrival at the place where Christian and Apollyon fought and they read the writing on the monument. In G, search for "Of which a monument I stand..." OWC, 166-226

Week 5: From that point to the end of Part 2. OWC 226-290

I hope this is all intelligible.
