What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

Two or three years ago I read this book for high school book club, and it was about this guy who wakes up with amnesia in space and the whole book goes between current time and him having flashbacks to before they got sent off. He finds this other ship and they connect and there was an alien that reminded me of a crab made out of rocks. I don't remember the cover as I read it hardcover without the dust jacket. It was relatively new at the time.
