⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ Juliette found herself returning to the library nearly everyday. She wasn’t that much of a fan of reading, but aside from the woods, the library was the only other quiet place. Generally. She hated it when people were being noisy in the library. Usually, she would then go to the woods, but today the heavens had decided to open, and even though she could face the possibility of a rainy call, she didn’t want to be wet before her call even started. Just in case. That was her excuse, because she didn’t like admitting she was afraid of the classic British Isles weather (view spoiler) and she really, really hated getting wet. In Russia and China, it barely ever poured like it did here. It snowed a lot though, she had to admit. Especially in Russia.
⠀ ⠀ Juliette sighed as she retreated into a slightly quieter area of the library, grabbing a book along the way. She didn’t even care what book it was. Likely a Sidhe history book, as most were.

⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ For gods sake. Juliette lowered her book slightly, resisting the urge to slam it and forced a smile onto her pretty face. She turned around to face the happy girl. Probably older than her.
⠀ ⠀ She couldn’t understand how someone could be so happy. They literally went a school with a possibility of dying every single second. There was no space for positivity, at least until you had finished your call. And even then, there was still the trauma of the call and all that had happened because of the call. Like Rosalind and Celia’s deaths.
⠀ ⠀ “Hi,” Juliette replied, somewhat less merrily than the girl. “Um, I don’t think we’ve met before?”

⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ Juliette didn’t understand how the girl was still so happy. Hadn’t she made it quite clear in her tone that she didn’t want to be disturbed? Oh well. Socialising it was then. Celia would have told her to make more friends.
⠀ ⠀ “Nice to meet you too,” Juliette said, somewhat sarcastically. She didn’t mean it to sound sarcastic but knowing Juliette, it most definitely would come out as sarcastic. “I’m a fourth year, and my name is Juliette Rostova.” She tried to smile for the girl but it was pained. Juliette barely smiled anymore, at least not after Celia happened. “To be honest, I have no idea what this book is. I just wanted a bit of quiet in a dry place,” she confessed. She glared at the title. “Romeo and Juliet,” she read. “Well, that’s what I suppose the book is. I wouldn’t be surprised if my parents named me after the Juliet in this book. They love reading.”

⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ Juliette stared at the girl. What did she mean by she had no idea how old she was? Even Juliette remembered her age and birthday, and she had been living the past year like a ghost. “You also have a gorgeous name,” she smiled, hoping that she was coming across as nice. Celia had always been the kind one and Juliette always the cold one, but she had just spiralled into another level of coldness after Celia’s death. Celia would have been crying if she knew what Juliette had turned into.
“Is Romeo and Juliet worth the read?” she asked, just to keep their conversation going. “I’ve never been that much of a fan for books, but if it’s a favourite of yours, maybe I should give it a try.” Juliette was trying so hard to smile and stay positive. “And if you’re fifteen, you’re likely a sixth year, right?”

⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ The forced smile faded from Juliette’s face and a sad smile replaced it. “I’m fine,” she said, though it sounded like everything but fine. “Just…” Was she really going to tell a stranger about Celia? Well… if she died from the Call, she supposed there would be someone who knew and remembered her and Celia.
⠀ ⠀ “My twin died last year from the call. I’m still recovering,” she forced out, the sad smile still glued upon her face. “It shouldn’t take this long to recover but my other sister also died from the call so I suppose I’m also worried. But no, please stay. I need to socialise,” she laughed half-heartedly, and the laugh died down into silence.

⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ “Nonono,” Juliette rushed out, grabbing Ennette by the arm. “Please,” she whispered, voice cracking, “stay.” She honestly had no idea what she was doing but she dragged Ennette back down. “Please, stay,” she repeated. “Don’t mind me. I need somebody like you to bring happiness into my life. I can’t stay like this forever.” Juliette breathed in slowly, and then breathed out again. “I’m not asking you to be a therapist or something, but I just need someone to talk to. And most of my friends have died in their call, and the ones who didn’t have left the school. You weren’t prying, please,” she begged.

⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ Juliette breathed out a sigh of relief. “Tragic? Maybe my parents cursed me with my name,” she laughed, but it was half-hearted. “But I do love a good romance,” she added. “Celia said that she had always preferred As You Like It though. Which do you prefer?”

⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ “I’ve been trying to get into romance lately, so I should probably actually read this book,” Juliette smiled, and this time it wasn’t a pained one. “Any more you recommend?”
“What’s the little match girl?” she asked. It was rare Juliette had never heard a book title before, because even though she rarely read, she still loved finding out about books.

⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ Maybe making friends wasn’t as hard as Juliette thought. “New?” She raised her brow. “It looks crusty,” she said, taking the book from Ennette’s hands and turning it around. “The Little Match Girl. Hmm, that’s interesting. A fairytale you say? No summary? I’ve never seen a book without a summary before.” Juliette put the book down carefully. What was the book Celia said she liked? Was it— no, that was another book. Rosalind. Rosalind had loved fairytales with her whole heart. What if—
⠀ ⠀ Excited, Juliette opened the book cautiously. Handwriting. Not printed words. Juliette’s breath caught as she saw her initials ‘J.R’ and Celia’s ‘C.R’ written somewhere in the book. Of course. Rosalind would have never left them alone, ever. “This is no ordinary book,” Juliette said, slowly.

⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ Lots of people write in books. But not Rosalind. Not unless there was anything urgent, and the call was urgent. Juliette was 99.99% sure that that handwriting was Rosalind’s. She would never have left Juliette and Celia alone, Juliette was sure of that. “I’m sure it’s not just any book. My eldest sister who died in the call when she was a first year was very smart. She was prepared for everything. She would…” Juliette faltered, heart catching in her throat as she thought of Rosalind again. “She would have done this for her sisters,” she managed to finish.

⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ “It’s fine,” Juliette said. She might be cold, but she wasn’t a robot. She had emotions, and she felt. And she wanted to connect to Ennette. Make a friend. Of course she would have assumed Rosalind’s book to have been nothing. She didn’t understand. And Juliette understood. Both Rosalind, and Ennette.
⠀ ⠀ “Alice? Who’s Alice?” Juliette asked bluntly, hopefully not rudely. Had Ennette also lost someone? She was so thoughtless for thinking that she was the only person who had lost someone because of the call. Of course she wouldn’t be the only one suffering. That was stupid of her.

⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ Of course she hadn’t. She just found Rosalind’s book today. “No,” Juliette replied, choosing her words carefully. “This is the first time I’ve seen or heard of this book, but maybe I’ll take it out on loan to read!” Ennette was acting weirdly, and it was as if the girl knew.
⠀ ⠀ She stared at Ennette while the girl rambled on about something, her face void of expression. “Tell me,” she said. “Who really is this Alice? You certainly aren’t interested in the Little Match Girl, because this is my sister’s book. You’re hiding something.” Juliette’s eyes narrowed. Of course she was hiding something. They had just met. But this seemed somewhat different. She was lying, and trying to seem like she wasn’t. Interesting.

⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ “Yes, as a matter of fact they have.” Juliette sighed as she started picking at her nails. “Has anyone told you you have a good poker face too?” she asked. What was Ennette trying to get at? And since when did this start getting personal? Ah yes. Rosalind.
⠀ ⠀ The vibe of the library changed suddenly, and she swore she could feel a light breeze. Was she being transported? No, surely not. Ennette was still here. “Right. Sure.” As if I believe you. Juliette had heard Ennette suddenly talk about Alice with no one but Juliette there. She hadn’t seen said ‘Alice’, and she was sceptical.

⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ “Take it as whatever you want,” Juliette replied smoothly. She liked to think that she was good at quick thinking and especially replying in a way that didn’t harm the other person’s feelings, and avoiding the question at the same time. Sometimes her quick thinking saved her.
⠀ ⠀ Juliette sighed. Let her lie. She wasn’t going to stop Ennette from saying something she clearly didn’t feel like sharing, but it puzzled Juliette all the same. Why bring it up if she wasn’t comfortable with sharing it? Juliette had only brought Celia and Rosalind up because she needed to share them, but Ennette? She was playing at something, and Juliette didn’t like it. “Would you… um… like to talk about it?” she asked slowly. Ennette confused her. She had been a bubbly and friendly girl just moments ago, and now this?
