Angelina, or "Angie" as those close to her call her, grew up as happy as can be. She had a little brother named Matthew, two loving parents, and a large house where she took care of the ducks and her tuxedo cat Phillip. They had a huge backyard and a large oak tree, and most nights she would swing on the seat that hung from it and try and see how high it could go. She was never scared she would get hurt, never scared the string holding it up would break, never scared a bee from the nearby nest would sting her, never scared. At night her cat would cuddle up with up, and in the morning the ducks would waddle up to her, and Angie pretended their squawks were actually saying mama!.


𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐍𝐒𝐈𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍

"Mama!" she sobbed, holding tightly onto her mother's sleeve. The new building was scary. large concrete walls and a serious looking lady waiting at the door. All the other kids were crying too. Crying at the goodbyes and at the loss of their childlike wonder. Angelina has been one of the kids that hadn't been told until the very last moment. At first, she didn't believe it, didn't believe that the pretty fairies in the books could be evil. Her idea of magic and a force out there working for her crumbled, and so did her face when her parents and brother left. She gave one more trembling kiss atop a meowing Phillips head, and her mother whispered, "You can get through this. We will see you again during visiting every weekend, and we will bring Phillip. I believe in you, mi dulzura."


𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐄 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐍𝐎𝐖

Mi dulzura. My sweetness. Angie held onto those last words her mother said every night. She would repeat them until the tears stopped. Every weekend, she would run to her family, and every weekend, she would hope more and more that she would go back forever one day. She was fast, a good hider, and smart for her age. She'd gotten reprimanded for her trusting nature, which would be the death of her in Faerieland if she lent a helping hand to a Sidhe. But her sweetness gained her the respect of some of her peers, and she made friends, as well as kept old ones who were also sent to Boyle. Every day she got stronger, and more cunning. She cut her hair short, tried to stop biting her nails, and found a love for archery. Her resilience kept her strong, and she had to believe that she would make it. She hated the rhetoric that they couldn't hope to live. Hope isn't weakness, it's a reason to become stronger.


𝐖𝐇𝐎 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐘 𝐇𝐀𝐕𝐄 𝐁𝐄𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐄

Angelina is still a sweet little girl. She still loves pink, and still reads fairytales. She still likes to build forts out of sticks in the woods, and she still squeals whenever she sees a cute animal. She refuses to let fear get in the way of her enjoyment of life. Every rainbow, every butterfly, ever compliment from a friend or embarrassed I miss you from her brother is cherished as if it was the last. But not because it might be her last, because that would imply that life is only worth living because it's limited. Life is worth living because it's beautiful. Angelina smiles at her hardened teachers and giggles at stupid jokes and dances in the rain because life is a wonderous thing, and she is lucky to be living hers, no matter if she has ten hours or ten thousand years to enjoy it.

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐋𝐈𝐅𝐄 𝐋𝐎𝐒𝐓

James was raised by two no-nonsense parents. They made sure she got good grades, set up a college fund, the works. She was told about the Call at age seven, and while she cried for days after, it also helped prepare her for the horrors to come. Before she turned ten, she was a model student, maybe a tiny bit bossy, and her work ethic and drive could make her seem a little condescending. But even then, she always helped her classmates when needed, and kept her mouth shut about her knowledge of the Call, understanding it was important to respect her friend's parent's decisions. She bounced back quick after arriving at the college and her older brother Orion was a sixth year at the time, which made it feel a little bit more like home. Until he was called when she was in her second year, and he was in his seventh. It happened during lunch, one minute he was there, the next gone. Little James clutched her friends tight and sobbed, eagerly counting down the seconds in her head until the three minutes and fourteen seconds were up.

Miraculously, her brother survived. But the experience scarred him, and he wasn't the same fun-loving older brother she once knew. It took weeks for him to laugh at her silly faces again, and he didn't come back to visit her for a while after he left. Eventually he started to turn back into his regular self again, but she knew that something had changed indefinitely in Orion, and seeing her brother shaking after those three minutes is when she truly felt fear for the first time.

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐂𝐀𝐋𝐋

James was a third year when she was called, freshly twelve years old. She and her friends were supposed to be asleep, but instead they were all up giggling and gossiping, debating social issues like the politicians they'd seen on TV and thinking about where they wanted to live when they were older. The Sidhe came for James when she was about to make a closing statement to her speech on why the suburbs are superior to both the city and countryside when poof. She was gone. Alone, bare feet, dark sky and barren ground. The wastelands. That was her first thought- she was in the wastelands. She could even see the cliff in the distance. And then it hit her, the fact that she was in them, not looking at a guestimate-picture. None of those pictures could prepare her for the depression of Faerieland, and she couldn't help but think, no wonder they hate us- we put them here. Then the horn sounded, and she was on her feet, not bothering to try and find a weapon. She couldn't trust the water and food here, so she paced herself. The dreariness of it all blurred together, her feet blistered, and time became a laughable concept. She ran, then walked, ran, then walked, ran, then walked, never risking a full stop.

And then she tripped. She squeaked in pain when she fell on a sharp rock, but that didn't compare to when she saw a Sidhe for the first time. It was terrifying, and just wrong. Everything about it was wrong. She didn't even know where it came from, but it was there. And then its hand was on her arm. It whispered into her ear, "You're lucky I'd rather play with my food," and suddenly, she was back in her dorm.

Luck. In the end, she'd survived because of pure luck.


𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐍𝐒𝐈𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍

James shut down after her call. She didn't leave her room for two weeks out of pure shame. Well, the doctors said it was trauma, which it was, but she also felt an unreasonable amount of guilt. She'd trained and trained, and in the end, it didn't matter, because she would have died if that Sidhe had chosen to kill her in that last minute of the Call that it had caught her in. And the guilt? One of her best friends, Reyna, died a month after. James has looked sadly at the birthday gift she had gotten for Reyna- it would have been her birthday in two weeks. She would never celebrate.

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐄 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐍𝐎𝐖

James saw the trauma and sadness in her peers, and in herself, and she knew it was her purpose to fix it. She knew that from the moment she saw her first call. After she graduated grade school, she went into college for education and got a doctorate in it, as well as a bachelors in Sidhean culture. She saved up, worked multiple jobs, and got a house for herself, and helps pay off her parents' mortgage. She's the headmaster of the best survival college in the world, Boyle. But sometimes, she feels like she's still the 'gifted kid' sitting on the floor in a dorm with her friends. And she's not sure if she likes that feeling.

𝐖𝐇𝐎 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐘 𝐇𝐀𝐕𝐄 𝐁𝐄𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐄

James is an excellent instructor (most of the time). She's patient, but firm, and doesn't hesitate to divvy out consequences when necessary. Some find her cruel, but everything she does is for the students' best interests. She's well respected, clever, and despite her curt and straightforward attitude that might throw people off, she has close friends that she's kept most of her life. She's still learning more and more on how to combat this threat, but for now, her main focus is to train the children the best she can.

Your survival is my main priority. Those are the first words students hear out of her mouth, only occasionally preceded by her name or a hello. And even if that student won't like her, they'll know that those words are true.

Amanda grew up with two different forces pushing and pulling her in two directions. Sometimes she wonders if that's why she's so indifferent sometimes- if the two urges ended up cancelling each other out into a blob of nothing. She knows that's not the case, and instead, she feels too much, and all of that feeling was buried underneath her father's submissiveness and her mother's coldness. Her father, Amos, was a quiet man. A kind one, but never the kind to express much opinion, or show emotion that would cause drama. On the other hand, her mother Liliana. was cruel and outspoken. She was the alcohol smell to Amos's cinnamon candle, and now Amanda can't stand either smell. While Amos never scolded or punished Amanda, he never played with her either. Never comforted her when her mother screamed, allowing his young daughter to take the verbal abuse without even blinking an eye.



𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐍𝐒𝐈𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍

Amanda was sent to Boyle two weeks before her tenth birthday, earlier than most kids. She was eager to leave, and her parents didn't care either way, so it worked out well. She was one of the first kids to shave their heads, kept her nails sharp, and ate well. Throughout her school years, she was determined to survive, and no one doubted that she would. She thrived in all her classes, made good friends, and was always praised by her instructors. She refused to die before living a life in a quiet house that smelled of lavender and didn't have dirty socks covering the floors. And her sixth year, she had the chance to grab the fate she wanted.



𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐂𝐀𝐋𝐋

Amanda was going home for the first time since her second year. Her mom swore she was sober, and they both swore they were sorry. Despite her best interests, Manny had hope they were being truthful. Lost in her thoughts, she unknowing walked in the middle of train tracks, just as the bells started flaring in warning. She gasped and started to run out of the way, and then she tripped on the rails, the headlights blinding her as she falls face first on spiky, dull grass. Grass that had been green a few seconds ago, vibrant with the vibrant summer sun. Now, she was surrounded with a gray sky and a feeling of fear she had never experienced. That fear was quickly overcome with a simple, primal urge- live.



𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐄 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐍𝐎𝐖

After she survived her call, Amanda lived with her parents until she turned seventeen, and then went off to college early. Amos and Lillian kept true to their word and were much better than the parents of her youth, she still needed space to figure out who she was without their presence. Amanda got a doctorate in psychology and steamrolled through her career, quickly climbing the ranks to the head psychologist.


𝐖𝐇𝐎 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐘 𝐇𝐀𝐕𝐄 𝐁𝐄𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐄

Amanda is a mix of her parents' worst qualities. She's mean and impatient like her mother, as well as indifferent like her father. Underneath it all, she couldn't be more different. Every little thing made her feel so much, makes her want to cry and laugh and express things in a way she never felt safe to as a kid. Over time, she'd developed ways to express empathy and kindness in her own way, but it's still hard to do in a way most people do. Manny's a tough love girl, impatient, and not at all the typical therapist you'd think of (hence why she's not one- she's a psychologist) but she's trying. And as a doctorate in psychology, she can understand that's the best any of us can do.
