Welcome to the In a Glass Darkly Buddy Read Discussion thread! This thread officially opens on October 1st and anyone can join at any time. Please keep in mind that spoilers are allowed in this thread but only up to the group's current reading place. Do not spoil the book if you've read further than the group. Any extra days can be used to catch up!

Each day we will be reading by chapters or page numbers. Page numbers are an approximation based on the hardcover or paperback that is the default on Goodreads. The suggested Buddy Read discussion schedule is as follows:

Week of 10/01

October 2nd: The familiar
October 3rd: Mr. Justice Harbottle

I'm not a big fan of classics, and the setting and pace are classical. I really liked Dracula, and I hope I like this one the same!
Though the first two/three chapters of Green tea were a (boring) introduction, I started to like it when the monkey appeared. Was the monkey a metaphor of some mental illness?
I had that in mind but the conclusion for this was awful, (view spoiler)

Also, I have the book in Spanish, but it's only in English on the Internet. I was afraid if it was old English and I didn't understand the English well, but surprisingly, it's easier to follow than Spanish. I think the translator used more cultured words than the original :/

THE FAMILIAR
This one was creepy. My conclusion was that the watcher was a ghost somehow. After the ending I understand that he was something like that, a vengeful ghost or something. Also the title makes sense haha
I'm not sure I've understood the ending. Did Barton die of fear?  It was confusing, but at least there weren't any "it's not my fault he died" conclusion lol

I'm having such a hard time getting into this unfortunately:(
I've only just finished The familiar will share my thoughts when I get home

PS this is the most boring classic I've ever picked up and that's saying a lot after reading Hard times by Charles Dickens lol

Bopeep (bopip) | 1088 comments I'm trying to be optimist about this but you're right: this is boooring. I didn't like neither the three short stories, and I hated Justice Harbottle.

At least the dragon volant is easier to read... I just laughed when the Marquis left the main character there and casually said "oops hey, I forgot to mention that this house is haunted haha okay bye!" lol.

I hope Carmilla would be more entertaining...

(My most hated classic is Dorian Gray)

Bopeep (bopip) | 1088 comments I kinda liked the Dragon Volant. It's easier to read than the others, and I had an idea of what would happen from the beginning, but I liked it anyway.

Bopeep (bopip) | 1088 comments I've finished the book :) The last two stories were long, but they were in first person POV and weren't hard to read. I hope you can at least read Carmilla, but I liked the Dragon Volant too.

As for Carmilla is what I expected Dracula to be: the vampire victim's POV. I liked Laura and Carmilla, and I was surprised there were more women on the story than men (though, of course, they were the heros after all *rolls eyes*)

I unfortunately decided to dnf before even getting to Carmilla :( maybe I'll get to it some time but for now it wasn't for me. I'm glad you enjoyed it more than I did x

Bopeep (bopip) | 1088 comments I don't blame you, I would haven't finished if it wasn't for my pride? to finish a book.

Camilla was easier to read, and at least had a final conclusion. The shorter ones hadn't had a clear one...
