What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

Hello! I am hoping for book suggestions where a character is sentient but is mistaken for a pet. I really enjoyed The King's Captive where the main character can shift into a domestic housecat and mistakenly becomes adopted as a pet by a deadly Elfin king. Another good one (though not clean like the King’s Captive is) is Beyond the Next Star, where the main character is a human adopted by an alien as an animal companion to help his PTSD. M/F please.

Whispers from the Imperial Cage series by Olympia Black. It's a dark sci-fi rom series. And Bay's mercenary by C.L. Scholey also a sci-fi rom series. Beware that there could be potential triggers in both series, but especially the first series. And both are firmly in the adult range since they're not "clean".
