Hey Saige - Can we get the spreadsheet and review chat linked in the first message?

Will do! I'm just finishing the separate team SS's now, will post them as soon as they're done!

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 5341 comments Hey, team, checking in! Now that I see the SS I'm trying to remember how we do this. Letters are up on the review thread, so we can use only those letters to start? An example is using the publisher's last letter of his/her last name. So can we use any letter in a title, AFN and ALN and publisher? I need to find all the rules. lol

Hi Vicki! Full rules are here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Just to clarify, it's only the first letter of the title that can count, including "a" and "the". So "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" works for H but "The Summer I Knew You" counts for T cause it starts with the.

You read one book for each letter, then spell a word. Letters you don't use can be used for a different word later without you needing to re-read for them. So on the review, "active" letters are those you need to read for and "completed" letters are those you've already read for that haven't yet been used for a word

Great! Thanks for the clarification. :)

Just adding here so we have it readily available:

Rules:
Each team will be given 10 letters at the start of the challenge. You must read one book for each letter before you can use them to spell a word. You can read for a letter by doing any of the following:

1. Title begins with the letter (includes “a” and “the”)
2. Letter in author’s initials
3. Series title ends with the letter
4. MC’s first or last name begins with the letter
5. Publisher name ends with the letter

message 11: by Michelle (new)

Michelle | 188 comments Out if curiosity, would it be ok to claim letters or just read and if the letter is not available just bank the book for future use?

message 12: by Jamie (new)

Jamie | 4246 comments Mod
I almost think it will work best if we just read and bank as we needed, mainly because we all read at different speeds.

We should just make sure we put all the letters it will work for so we can easily move it over as needed.

What does everyone else think?

message 13: by Michelle (new)

Michelle | 188 comments It also depends on whether people want to be competitive or just want to have fun. Personally I can go either way. I just wanted to make sure we will all be on the same page and I don't step on any toes.

@Saige - It looks like the spreadsheet is view only? Can you open this?

message 16: by Jamie (new)

Jamie | 4246 comments Mod
I'm fine with either, Michelle.

Also, I should say that I'm horrible at coming up with long words for these types of games. So hopefully we have some super spellers on the team, lol!

FYI - Column B on the banked tab has an error when you select the team member & Column D doesn't have the team members listed, it just says option 1 and option 2.

Ok I think I've fixed the issue on the banked tab - not sure what was happening there. Is anyone else having issues with Column D on the main sheet? It shows the list of participants for me, not just option 1 option 2, but maybe because I own the document it's showing me something different

Team, I'm just banking my books for now until we come up with a game plan :)

message 25: by Michelle (last edited Jul 01, 2025 09:19PM) (new)

Michelle | 188 comments Looking at the current letters we have now, here are some of the words that I can see.

Weighty
Eighty
White
Whey
Feet
Yeti
Whig

I think if we come up with a word to spell first than we can work on a game plan on which one to use and where to place it on the board to get maximum points.

message 26: by Michelle (new)

Michelle | 188 comments I like Weighty. I think it's a good strong word to start with and it will use 7/10 letters we got. As for placement on the board where do we want to start first?

message 27: by Ashleigh (new)

Ashleigh | 122 comments Are we only putting finished books in the banked tab?

message 28: by Saige (last edited Jul 02, 2025 03:31AM) (new)

Saige (lannister807) | 3842 comments Mod
Hi! I've seen some questions about word placement, so just wanted to drop in and remind folks that the first word of a Scrabble game has to go through the star in the middle! After that the only placement rule is that you have to connect to at least one previous word

message 29: by Jamie (new)

Jamie | 4246 comments Mod
Weighty is a good word! I already read an E so I'll move that over from the banked tab.

@Ashleigh - We can put finished books we read that don't work for any of our letters on the banked tab. That way we can use them for future letters.

I'm almost done with a book that works for W, so I can take that letter. But I can always just place my books on the banked tab too if that's easier.

message 36: by Alaina (new)

Alaina (ameserole) | 81923 comments Mod
Oh, actually, I might finish it tomorrow. So I won't claim anything just yet.

message 37: by Jamie (new)

Jamie | 4246 comments Mod
Since we have to read for every letter before we can post our word on the board, I say claim the letter you can if it's available.

I'm about to finish a book that has F.

message 38: by Alaina (new)

Alaina (ameserole) | 81923 comments Mod
well, i'm all over the place - I just finished it lol

message 39: by Jamie (new)

Jamie | 4246 comments Mod
We need to post all of our books for all the letters before we can submit our word, correct?

Just when I think I have my head wrapped around this, I question myself, lol

message 40: by Alaina (new)

Alaina (ameserole) | 81923 comments Mod
Yeah I think that’s correct. Letters before the word.

message 41: by Brittni (new)

Brittni | 1378 comments I've gone ahead and posted for G. Also a little unclear on everything but we'll figure it out!

message 42: by Brittni (new)

Brittni | 1378 comments Hi everyone. Just wanted to let you know I've added the rules to the top of the banked page. I keep forgetting what we can use so I figured it would be easiest to have it there. Hope it can be helpful to others as well. Feel free to change it around if you want to!

The book I just finished will work for either H or E. I'm trying to decide which one of these is harder to find.

Is anyone currently reading for either of these?

message 45: by Alaina (new)

Alaina (ameserole) | 81923 comments Mod
I'm currently reading an E. Almost halfway through it.

message 46: by Jamie (new)

Jamie | 4246 comments Mod

message 48: by Jamie (new)

Jamie | 4246 comments Mod
I'm good with wherever. This part is not my strong suit lol

message 49: by Alaina (new)

Alaina (ameserole) | 81923 comments Mod
Okay, so, here is what we get bonus wise for the letters.

Bonus points are determined by the number value of each letter, just like in the boardgame. Those values are:

1 - A, E, I, L, N, O, R, S, T, U
2 - D, G
3 - B, C, M, P
4 - F, H, V, W, Y
5 - K
8 - J, X
10 - Q, Z

Our word is going to be WEIGHTY. So, we would want W or Y to be on the double letter score box.

We could do WEIGHTY using D8 to J8, H4 to H10, H6 to H12, or F8 to L8.

Edit: We could also have H on a double letter score box too. So, the numbers can be moved around as well.
