Long shot since it was written in 1939 but could it be How The Other Man Lives by Walter Greenwood?

Read: possibly in the early 2000’s
Format: had chapters and stories about people who had found their calling in their work. I recall it being interview style. Inspiring stories of people from all walks of life and varied jobs who had found deep meaning and purpose in their work. Based around the concept of Ikigai but not sure that this term was specifically used in the book.
