Tiny Love Stories: Mi-Lu, Geoffrey and Kipper

Mi-Lu and his sibling are believed to be the first two Pere David deer born in captivity -- which was a good thing for the rare species, but a bad thing for Mi-Lu, whose mother rejected him to raise her other fawn. It sounds harsh, but scientists think the rarity of deer twins meant that the mother wasn’t expecting two of them and didn't know how to take care of a second baby.
The twin deer were born at Knowsley Safari Park in Prescot, England. When Mi-Lu’s mother showed no interest in caring for him, he was adopted by the park curator's dogs: a Lurcher named Geoffrey and a Golden Retriever name Kipper.
Geoffrey and Kipper became Mi-Lu’s temporary family. The unlikely family slept together, played together, and took daily walks around the grounds of the park. The rare deer was eventually returned to his herd. The breed is originally from China and at one time there were only 18 left in the world.
