When the baby hippopotamus Owen became stranded after the December 2004 tsunami that affected part of the Kenya Coast, villagers and fishermen in Malindi (a few kilometers from Mombasa) worked tirelessly to rescue him. Owen - just a year old at the time - was then brought to the Lafarge Ecosystems' Haller Wildlife Park sanctuary by Dr. Kahumbu. The frightened hippo ran right over to an elderly Aldabran tortoise and hid behind him, just as he would have hidden behind his mother.
To everyone's amazement, the orphan hippo and the 130-year-old tortoise adopted each other. They formed a bond and have been inseparable ever since – they swim, eat and play together, and even developed a special way of communicating that has baffled scientists and animal experts alike.
