Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1332 comments SAM'S TASK - THE LOST GENERATIONS
A. Read A Novel Or Collection Of Short Stories/Plays By One Of The Following Authors Who Are Often Called Part Of The Post-WWI "Lost Generation": F. Scott Fizgerald, Ernest Hemingway, John Dos Passos, Gertrude Stein, Zelda Fitzgerald, Sherwood Anderson, John Steinbeck, Or William Faulkner.
AND
B. To Celebrate The Final Season Of Lost, Read A Book Featured On The Show Over The Years: Lost Literature
(Note: If A Series Is Mentioned, Any Book From That Series Is Acceptable. For The Bible, Read The Old Or New Testament.)

If you need suggestions for books to read for this task post a request here.

Sara (hoot31) Great task Sam! I was able to place a book from Fall that I didn't get to. Thanks!

Donna Jo Atwood | 2412 comments Good task, Sam, (except it wiped out the book I was planning on for Abigail's task. That'll teach me to plan too far ahead!)

Yep.

Sara (hoot31) Sam, I was thinking of using The Complete Grimm's Fairy Tales for the second part of this task. I am seeing lots of different page options for this book. The range is 200ish to 800. Do you have a preference as to which is used?

Wikipedia's got a list of what's in the Complete Fairy Tales...you can check any edition against it to see if it really is complete or not. If you look at the link, you'll also see it was originally split into two volumes. I would consider reading all of Volume 1 OR 2 as completion of that part of the task.

Thanks Sam! I just looked to hold it at the library and the copy they have is the big one. I am excited!

kiki (keekers) | 815 comments just need some clarification...ANY book that's listed on the site that you gave a link to would work? because not all of the books are actually featured on the show, i.e., what sawyer read on the island, jack or ben's bookshelf. thanks for clearing this up for me, i'm a bit confused! :)

GREAT task, btw, i'm mourning the end of Lost, so this will be fun!

Yes, it's any book on the list. It's true that, for example, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz doesn't actually show up as a physical book, but it's definitely an integral part of the show.

I read it for the Summer Challenge and couldn't believe I had waited that long to read it.

Same here! It's now on my favorites shelf.

By the way, awesome task! Add me to the list of those mourning the end of Lost. For the first time ever, I'm actually wishing the hiatus was longer!

I'll be reading either Our Mutual Friend by Dickens or Ulysses by Joyce for the second part of the task.

Other 5 star "Lost Lit" books from my shelves include The Third Policeman by Flann O'Brien, Everything That Rises Must Converge by Flannery O'Connor, A Tale of Two Cities by Dickens, The Stand by Stephen King, and Watership Down by Richard Adams.

Leora | 209 comments I have 'Dear Scott, Dearest Zelda' at home and would love to use it for this task. It is an epistolary novel of letters that F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald wrote to eachother. Would this be ok?

That would be fine.

message 21: by Sally (new)

Sally (sallysimply) | 537 comments My dilemma is that once I picked two books (The Pearl by Steinbeck and Animal Farm by Orwell), I saw that on Goodreads they're both under 100, but the copies I saw at the bookstore were each a little bit over.

Should I pick new titles, or is this ok? I've just been wanting to read both of these for a while now and thought it'd be cool to work them into this challenge since I love LOST! (Especially since The Pearl fits both parts of the challenge)

The Pearl is really more of a novella rather than a novel, but it's okay by me. And, as far as I'm concerned, Animal Farm is on the list, so it's fine. But Cynthia's the one with final say.

If Sam says it's ok it's fine by me.

I sent an email to Sam two weeks ago and it seems like she is not doing the winter challenge she didn't answer my email or my message (#25).

Liz M Angela wrote: "Can I read The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck for the first part and Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret for the second part? "

Well, I'm not Sam or Cynthia, but Steinbeck is specifically listed in the task for part A, so that must be ok.

And Are You There, God?... is listed on the Lost Literature link provided by Sam, so it also should be ok.

message 29: by Angela (new)

Angela | 920 comments That is what I thought Liz...Thanks!
