Dune

I have so many friends who love "Dune," and I didn't care for it. I had it assigned to me in Honors English back in high school, and it just wasn't my cup of tea. Overall, I found that I prefer the fantasy type of sci-fi to "hard" sci-fi. Like I said, though, lots of my friends think it's brilliant. The best thing, to me, is that there are so many books and ideas that no one has to like all of the same things. :-)

Snow Crash
Even though I probably like Bruce Sterling more as a whole, Snow Crash just hits all my buttons.
And of course, I have to recommend my own book:
Under the Amoral Bridge A Cyberpunk Novel

The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien

Dragons of Autumn Twilight by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hicks

The Wayfarer Redemption by Sara Douglass

Babylon 5: In the Beginning by Peter David David

Joshua and Aaron ITP Book Two
David Gelber

Labyrinth of Evil is one of my all-time favorite Star Wars prequel/spin-off novels.

Seen the movie? Read the books:

I'm in the middle of reading this one by Chelsea Campbell, but I like it so far; it's another original YA superhero novel.
