Kate (kshiv) 1. On Beauty By Zadie Smith
i really wanted to like this book. I heard great things about it. I was disappointed in the predictable characters and their reactions to events. The Belseys and Kippes are families that are enemies in the academic field. Though at the beginning, they are on different continents, for some reason Dr. Kippes takes a position at small College where Belsey works. Then they rent a house down the street. Then the Mom's become friends. A little too much. I didn't love it. It was a book I finished in two days just so I could start a new one.

Kate (kshiv) 2. The Outcast
This book was depressing. Really depressing. The main character is an unloved boy who is forever traumatized by the death of his mother. I am also traumatized by the descriptions of it. Might make a good moving. A perfect role for a brooding young actor.

Kate (kshiv) 3. Definately Dead
4. All Together Dead
5. Dead and Gone

All by Charlaine Harris. After those bummers I read over the weekend I needed at little fun. Can't go wrong with Sookie Stackhouse. Now, if you'll excuse me I'll go back to my Eric fantasies.

message 4: by Kinga (new)

Kinga Hello,
Could you please move your list to the correct alphabetical folder?
Thanks.

Oh, and my friend keeps bugging me to read On Beauty, she says it is amazing... So I want to like it too. You got me worried!

Thanks for the note. I didn't realize my folder was there! I have a bookmark and usually just go straight to my list so I don't see that page. I appreciate it. Maybe I was just too excited about On Beauty and then didn't like it. Give it a try and see what you think.

Kate (kshiv) 6. Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy

This book is so long it should count for two. I really enjoyed it. I think it would have been better to have someone to read it with me and discuss what was happening. Maybe CliffNotes would have helped. I liked it and loved to hate Anna. So self destructive. Good fun.
A sidenote, I saw a preview for a Tolstoy movie starring James McAvoy. I can't wait to see it. His accent is like crack to me.

message 8: by Kinga (new)

Kinga Wow. It is only 14th of January and you managed to finish Anna Karenina! And five other books!

Luckily those Sookie books only take like 2 hours to read. I am a late night, after the kids go to bed reader.

Kate (kshiv) 7. Dark Prince by Christine Feehan.

I would not recommend this book. It's not good.

Kate (kshiv) 8. The Virgin Queen's Daughter by: Ella March Chase

I really liked this book. I have read many books about Tudor England. This one has a great male character in Gabriel Wyatt. It was the same vein as Philippa Gregory. I would like to read more by this author.

message 12: by Kate (new)

Kate (kshiv) 9. Virgin By: Robin Maxwell

This book was a story of Elizabeth I before she came to the throne. It was about her involvement with Thomas Seymour. I didn't like the writing style and thought it was boring. I read another of Robin Maxwell's books and didn't like it either. I love Tudor fiction but this is not a good one.

message 13: by Kate (new)

Kate (kshiv) 10. Eat This, Not That For Kids

This is informative and entertaining. I was really surprised how much sugar is in the stuff my kids are eating. That's probably why they like it.

message 14: by Kate (new)

Kate (kshiv) 11. The Fairy Godmother By: Mercedes Lackey

This book was a version of Cinderella gone wrong. She misses her prince and becomes a Fairy Godmother instead. I liked the idea of the story better than the actual writing. It was ok.

message 15: by Kate (new)

Kate (kshiv) 12. Columbine By: Dave Cullen

I was easily pulled into this book. I was amazed at the inaccuracies of the "facts" the media gave us following the shooting. I would recommend it to anyone wanting a clear picture of the story.

message 16: by Kate (new)

Kate (kshiv) 13. The Last Wife of Henry VIII By: Carolly Erickson

this was a great piece of historical fiction. The author usually writes non-fiction. She had a large knowledge base to draw from. I know the least about Catherine Parr of all the wives so I was very interested in her story. Though is is a fictional book, the basic history is correct and I enjoyed it.

message 17: by Kate (new)

Kate (kshiv) 14. The Hidden Diary of Marie Antoinette By: Carolly Erickson

This was written in diary form. It started when Marie was is Austria just before marriage and ends with, well, you know how it ends. It was ok.

message 18: by Kate (new)

Kate (kshiv) 15. Garden Spells By: Sarah Addison Allen

I loved this book. Thanks to Em for recommending it. I read it in one afternoon. It reminded me of that awesome movie with Sarah Michelle Gellar where she cooks the magical food. This book was great.

message 19: by Kate (new)

Kate (kshiv) 16. The Sugar Queen By Sarah Addison Allen
I really liked this one too. I could have read 1000 pages of these past two books.

message 20: by Kate (new)

Kate (kshiv) 17. Water for Elephants by: Sara Gruen

For some reason this book has been sitting on my shelf for months and I didn't read it. It was suggested again so I picked it up. It was good. Not great but good. I will probably pass it on to a friend.

message 21: by Kate (new)

Kate (kshiv) 18. Dead Until Dark By: Charlaine Harris

I have read this a zillion times and I never get tired of it.

message 22: by Kate (new)

Kate (kshiv) 19. Percy Jackson #1

I think this book will make a good movie. It was fun and I bet kids love it. I hope they go to St. Louis in the movie like they do in the book.

message 23: by Kate (new)

Kate (kshiv) I've hit a snag reading The Shadow of the Wind. It's very dark and mysterious. I like it but it's really talking me awhile to get through.

message 24: by Kate (new)

Kate (kshiv) 20. The Shadow of the Wind By: Carlos Ruiz Zafron

This was a complex and detailed story of a young man searching for the truth about a mysterious novel. It was very well written and reminded me of an old black and white movie. There were alot of characters and interweaving plotlines. It was good but not an easy read.

message 25: by Kate (new)

Kate (kshiv) 21. Post-Mortem by Patricia Cornwall.
A run of the mill police thriller. Someone gave me the whole series so I will probably read a few more. They just aren't as good as Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child if you want police thrillers.

message 26: by Kate (new)

Kate (kshiv) 22. Body of Evidence By: Patricia Cornwell
23. All That Remains By: Patricia Cornwell

message 27: by Kate (new)

Kate (kshiv) 24. The Hunger Games By: Suzanne Collins.
I saw this novel on alot of top ten lists so i thought I'd give it a try. It was unique and I'll read the other books in the series. It was not great but it was a good YA book.

message 28: by Kate (new)

Kate (kshiv) 25. Cruel and Unusual By Patricia Cornwell

More of the same. I need a break from these horrible murders. I am going to have to read something fluffy. Sookie Stackhouse anyone?

message 29: by Kate (new)

Kate (kshiv) I am 1/4 the way there! I had no idea that I read so many books. It's kind of crazy.

26. Living Dead in Dallas By: Charlaine Harris
Not my favorite but there are some great Eric parts.

message 30: by Kate (new)

Kate (kshiv) 27. The Body Farm By: Patricia Cornwell
This is the best one yet.
28. Cause of Death By: Patricia Cornwell

message 31: by Kate (new)

Kate (kshiv) 29. Club Dead by Charlaine Harris.
This is a great book. Has the introduction of important characters in a fun way.
30. Black Notice By Patricia Cornwell
i miss the 2 books in the series that come before this one. I couldn't believe what happened. Very strange.
31. The Last Precinct By Patricia cornwell.
man, does Scarpetta have some bad luck. This book was pretty good but I am not sure the series is going in a believable way.

message 32: by Kate (new)

Kate (kshiv) 32. Black FlyBy Patricia Cornwell
SPOILER
Lucy and Marino know he was alive the whole time??!! I don't buy it. this is way too far fetched. I am losing interest.

message 33: by Kate (new)

Kate (kshiv) 33.Trace by Patricia Cornwell
This one wasn't even good. it had a recycled storyline with Marino getting involved with a Mom on the victim. The writing style was different too.

message 34: by Kate (new)

Kate (kshiv) 34. Predator By. Patricia cornwell.
Why am I still reading these. I think it's b/c only have 2 more and then they're going to the used book store. This one was the worst yet.

message 35: by Kate (new)

Kate (kshiv) Cause of Death was the last really good one. The Last Presinct was ok. I missed 2 or 3 in the middle. someone game me a set of them and there were a couple missing but Beggars can't be choosers as my mom used to say!

message 36: by Kate (new)

Kate (kshiv) 35. Boook of the Dead By Patricia cornwell. this one was better than the last few. these people definately need a little sunshine in their lives.

36. Dead and Gone BY charlaine harris
I needed a little Eric.

message 37: by Kate (new)

Kate (kshiv) 37. Scarpetta by Patricia Cornwell. This is the last one I have so I guess I'm done. This one was a little better. I read yesterday that Angelina Jolie has the movie rights to Kay Scarpetta and will be making a prequel to the books. I wouldn't have picked angelina but what do I know.

I agree. i really appreciated Kitty and Dolly the most. I have seen a couple movie versions but they just don't capture the emotion and passion of the characters. i really hate Anna. I know it's weird but I just kept wanting to slap her in the book. Strange.

Kate (kshiv) 38. The Miracles At Prato
I got the book through the First Reads program. I enjoyed it. The story was well conceived. I was cared for the characters and what happened to them.

Kate (kshiv) 39. The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo
This book lived up to the hype. (so few of them do) It took me about 20 pages to get hooked but then I was in. I can't wait to read the others.

message 41: by Kate (new)

Kate (kshiv) 39. Catching Fire By: Suzanne Collins.
I liked like this book even better than the first one. I thought it was very fast paced and entertaining. Talk about a cliff hanger.

Hmm, maybe I'll have to give it another try then. I picked it up and was pretty unmoved, but maybe my mistake was giving up after only ten pages or so :)

I did the same thing. I checked it out at the library and started reading 2 or 3 times and just couldn't get going. A couple days before it was due I tried again and got sucked in. It was great once I got going and I didn't figure out the mystery halfway through which I appreciated. I was surprised by it. You should give it another go.

Kate (kshiv) 40. Dark Lover By: JR Ward
Ok, so I am embarassed to read this in public b/c of the goofy romance looking cover. I even turn it over on the table at my house. I borrowed the series from my sister and this one was not bad, just the right amount of trashy.

message 45: by Kate (new)

Kate (kshiv) 41. Lover Eternal By JR Ward
I'm hooked. The way they talk is obnoxious. I roll my eyes constantly but keep on reading.

message 46: by Kate (new)

Kate (kshiv) 42. Touch of Dead by. Charlaine Harris.
I was glad to read the backgoround on Hadley but otherwise kind of disappointed. Is it May yet?

message 47: by Kate (new)

Kate (kshiv) 43. Lover Awakened By JR Ward
44. Lover Revealed By JR Ward

Kate (kshiv) 46. Lover Enshrined by JR Ward. This was a good one. Didn't love Phury's story but lots of good storylines for the other characters.

message 50: by Kate (new)

Kate (kshiv) 47. Lover Avenged by JR Ward
Now i am done with that set and on to some other books I have really been looking forward to.
