Kelly (Maybedog) (maybedog) | 36 comments This was my favorite book as a toddler. It was forest green on the cover and I remember the egg being fancy but I don't know why. It was a largish children's book. The duck wanders around meeting up with others until he finally finds his mom. I thought it was "are you my mommy" but the books by that name I can find aren't right.

Kaethe (kaethedouglas) Are You My Mother? seems close, but not quite the thing. Care to narrow down the publication to sometime before...?

rivka Actually, Are You My Mother? sounds exactly right to me.

I'd swear it was that book as well. One of my brothers was obsessed with it when he was little. :)

Kelly (Maybedog) (maybedog) | 36 comments Yeah it wasn't a Dr. Seuss book.

OK, I admit I had a senility moment yesterday. I remember much more now. I was getting two titles confused I think.

The story is about a chick (baby duck I think) hatching from its egg. The mother is trying to get it to hatch and tries rolling it and kicking it and sitting on it and it won't hatch. There's a bunny involved I think. At the end is when it wakes up and says something about the duck being it's mom or something. It must have been published in the 60's. Before 1970 at least.

See it's got a fancy egg on the cover, completely bizarre. It's even big! I was wrong about the date, it says first edition was 1975... I wonder if that was the first edition with that publisher. I would have been 8 which makes no sense.

Kelly (Maybedog) (maybedog) | 36 comments Now I'm embarrassed. I should have just asked my sister. Apparently my mom sent her a copy for my nephew. She says it was published in the 50's. So that first edition must have been a different publisher.

Anyway, it's The Golden Egg Book by Margaret Wise Brown, the same woman who wrote Goodnight Moon and the Runaway Bunny.

Amy | 20 comments I remember that cover, too, and I'm a couple years older than you. I'm sure it's older than 1975. I want to look for it now to see the inside again!

Kelly (Maybedog) (maybedog) | 36 comments Me, too. I'm going to order it as soon as I get paid!
