Saya mmg minat nak menjadi seorang speed reader sejak dulu lagi tapi sampai skrg masih lagi slow reader.

1.Berapa perkataan seminit anda baca

Teringin nak tahu kecepatan membaca Aidura/minit ni :)

Samalah kita. Semasa kecil-kecil dulu saya adalah speed reader by nature, tapi taklah sepantas speed reader by training. Bila dah semakin dewasa, membaca lebih enak dilakukan secara perlahan-lahan seperti menikmati "fine dining".

Dear Khairul/Bunnybaby/Peija,

Aidura (sofira) | 1472 comments INFO 1 - THE PURPOSE/AIM FOR READING

The first step to improving your speed is to establish why you are reading and what you want to get out of it.

By doing this, you can determine how much information you need and the reading techniques to use.

Are you reading for leisure/enjoyment or do you need to memorise the facts?

Are you gleaning for information for your research?

It also makes a difference if you are reading from the internet or looking up a directory.

*** The first step to reading faster is to understand why you are reading.

If you are on a holiday and want a leisurely read, then there is no need to speed read.

If your aim is to spend a few enjoyable hours with a good book, then you do not need to worry about speed reading it.

Just relax and take your time! :D

Yup Aidura, setuju.

Aidura, may be you can describe more on the methods. What methods you use to speed up your reading?

For me the essence is in trying not to refer back to the last block we read, so concentration is very important. And like you said, I gain concentration first by knowing why I want to read a particular book. What answers do I seek from it? It helps me to concentrate better.

What about you?

Aidura, I beg to differ. Bukannya sebab banyak masa, tapi mungkin kerana semakin tua.

Aidura (sofira) | 1472 comments INFO 4 - PRE-READING

Pre-reading ensures that you read at the fastest level possible for the task required with the minimum loss of comprehension.

Pre-reading is used to ensure that you have the main idea before choosing to either skim, scan, intensively read or discard the material.

The process is similar to skimming, but less thorough and you should time yourself to spend "no more than 2 mins for 10 pages".

~ 2 mins --> 10 pages
~ 20 mins --> 100 pages
~ 60 mins (1 hour) --> 300 pages
~ 120 mins (2 hours) --> 600 pages
~ 180 mins (3 hours) --> 900 pages

* Read the title
* Read the first paragraph
* Read the first sentence of every other paragraph
* Read the last paragraph

The act of pre-reading gives you a clear overall idea of the material and gives your brain time to bring together relevant knowledge to help in your understanding of the material.

It also encourages you to make a decision, should I invest more time in this material or move on?

Oh. Dulu pernah juga buat yang nombor 3 tu. Dulu-dulu undergrad (baca: tujuan akademik) selalu kena belek journal dan textbook dua tiga macam sekaligus. Kalau baca macam 'kek coklat' mahu beruban kepala.

So kalau macam tu dikira reading jugak lah kot?

Aidura (sofira) | 1472 comments INFO 6 - INTENSIVE READING

A standard reading technique that everybody learns at school and it is literally reading word-by-word and for this type of reading sub-vocalisation is acceptable.

Use this skill when you have to understand or learn the content in-depth and you may read a passage several times to get a clear understanding.

Aidura (sofira) | 1472 comments INFO 7 - SCANNING

Scanning is the skill used when you look through reference material or directories to quickly find small pieces of information.

This is a skill that most of people understand, but do not use nearly enough.

Many students could increase their reading speed simply by using the index pages of books to find the information they want.

message 31: by Aidura (new)

Aidura (sofira) | 1472 comments INFO 8 - SKIMMING

When the index and/or contents page fails, then you will be forced to skim.

To skim a book, you read it in the following order:

1. The contents page

2. The conclusion and/or introduction

3. For each relevant chapter:
- Summary
- First paragraph
- First and last sentence of other paragraphs

4. Intensively read key information

By doing this, you can gain an overview of a book and from there you can decide if it is going to be useful.

message 32: by Aidura (new)

Aidura (sofira) | 1472 comments INFO 9 - REFERENCING

Many do not realise how much time and effort is wasted going back over reading material time and time again. If you are prepared before you read, then not only will you save time, but in some cases money too.

Instead of purchasing every book you read, you could settle for reading it in the library and because you referenced it the first time, you will not need to go again.

It can also be incredibly important at work, because when your manager asks you questions about your report, you will be able to quickly cite your sources and back up your arguments with evidence.

When referencing, record the following information:
1. Author's name
2. Place of publication
3. Year of publication
4. Edition (date accessed)
5. Publisher
6. Title
7. Web address/ISBN

message 33: by Aidura (new)

Aidura (sofira) | 1472 comments INFO 10 - SEARCHING

When using the Internet, it is almost impossible to find anything without using a search engine. But then do not forget to use FIND function (CTRL + F) to get you straight to the word you want!

message 34: by Aidura (new)

Aidura (sofira) | 1472 comments INFO 11 - READING FICTION

There are certain reasons why do people need to speed read fiction:

1. It is a class reader that you have been forced to read.

2. You want to appear to be more civilised and so want to improve the breadth of your reading experience.

3. The novel is boring, but you want to know how it ends.

message 35: by Aidura (last edited Feb 23, 2010 05:43PM) (new)

Aidura (sofira) | 1472 comments INFO 12 - READING NOVELS

Novels are divided into 2 main categories: classic novels with plenty written about them and newer novels where you may have to speed read the novel itself to gain an understanding of it.

Tips to speed reading novel:

1. Look at the cover

2. Read the blurb (description on the cover)

3. Read the first paragraph intensively

4. Read the titles of chapters

5. Skim interesting chapters

6. Read the final two pages to see how things turn out

This technique will ensure you get an overview and may be good enough for you to discuss it at some length, because people tend to only remember the highlights.

message 36: by Aidura (last edited Feb 23, 2010 07:35PM) (new)

Aidura (sofira) | 1472 comments INFO 13- READING ARTICLES

There are 4 main types of articles that appear in newspapers and magazines:

1. News items - key points are first and they are then fleshed out in detail.

2. Opinion pieces - introduction and summary give the position of the writer and then in the middle there will be supporting arguments. Generally speaking, opinion pieces rarely provide new insights and are often used in newspapers to influence the readers or as fillers (opinion pieces are also called editorials or comments).

3. Features - the best parts of the article will be in the body and in some magazines there will be boxes with interesting side-articles.

4. Interviews - it will be either a simple question and answer format or for more in-depth interviews a biography will be given and then there will be the interview itself which will often be in reported speech.

For each of these types of articles, use skimming and scanning to focus in on the areas of interest and then read intensively to get the most out of your reading time.

*** Get to know the layout of newspapers and magazines. Use that knowledge to read them faster.
