Toni | 18 comments I have been buying 5-10 a week lately in the last couple months. Addicted I AM!

message 2: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Gilmore | 510 comments It varies for me. But since joining this group, I've been buying a whole lot more than I used. There's something comforting in seeing that other people buy a lot of books too :)

message 3: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn (26kathryn) | 42 comments I usually buy about 3 a week, but it varies.

Unapologetic_Bookaholic I am on a book diet. So the better I stick to it the better I feel. I splurge, yes. But an average week/month for me this year has been very low. About 1 book.

message 5: by Rene (new)

Rene | 27 comments I splurge as often as I can. The last two months have been ridiculous though. I have bought enough books to last me the rest of the year. (I usually read around 6 a month.) I am determined to make a huge dent in my TBR pile before purchasing another. Just when I make that decision, I have an opportunity to visit the bookstore and poof!; there goes my determination. It is my obsession. HELP!!!!!

message 6: by Toni (new)

Toni | 18 comments Rene: I feel exactly what you are feeling. Everytime I even go to the grocery store I see the books and if I see one I want I cannot say no. If I go the bookstore forget it. I will spend A LOT of money.
I am trying to make a dent in my TBR pile myself. Just need to stop adding to it. Wish I could go on a book diet :)

message 7: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (Savhage Temptrest) (savhagetemptress) | 13 comments I have to pat myself on the back-I used to buy anywhere from 7-10 books in a week. Now, I've been sticking to 1-4! Whoo-hoo!

(Of course, I've been focusing on paying bills and getting ahead for a change, so that might be why. LOL)

message 8: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa theJeepDiva (thejeepdiva) I limit myself to $100 a month. I have been trying to buy used. It seems to help me get more books. I have had to buy new & hardbacks though. A few of my favorite authors have new books being released this year.

I have noticed that I am driving an awful lot in the used bookstore hunt though. I have been visiting neighboring towns, even neighboring states (AL & MS). So I guess I might need to budget in the fuel I am using in that 15mpg HEMI I drive. LOL!

Books are a healthy hobby as far as I am concerned so I see no harm in the adventure to find my books.

message 9: by Rene (new)

Rene | 27 comments Vanessa, you are right! Buying books is an adventure. (One that I love, love, love!!!) I have never thought of it that way. How insightful!

message 10: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine Harris (dopelb) Sadly, i'm a librarian, but I love buying books! I would say I buy about 1-2 per week. I need to set down and read them though. *writing my summer to-do list*

message 11: by Katie (new)

Katie (shimmerpop) | 22 comments I buy anwhere from 1-10 books a week, depending on money/sales/releases.

message 12: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 16 comments I probably buy at least 20-30 books a month. I go to thrift stores frequently! They're great and I feel like I have won the lottery every time I go!

message 13: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (rdflippen) | 20 comments After reading all the posts, I don't feel addicted at all now!~laughs~ I generally buy about 4-5 per month. However, there used to be a marvelous bookstore across the street from my office who had me read galleys for them. I could pick out as many as I wanted. When they closed, they let me have any and all they had and were still receiving right up to the day the doors closed. I probably have 300 advances, most of which I've read. Some are saved back for emergency reading materials.

message 14: by Heather (new)

Heather Adkins (heathermarieadkins) | 4 comments I feel so much better reading these posts! I also tend to buy between five and ten per week. If I've coupons, then it's even worse...When I vow to take a break from book buying, I get coupons in the mail, or I finish the books I have in a series and need to get the others...it's a vicious cycle. I'm glad I'm not the only one who faces it!

message 15: by Joseph (new)

Joseph (bluemanticore) | 1866 comments Mod
I average about 4 new books a month, but my purchasing of used books may range anywhere from 50 to 0 depending on what I come across at the library.

message 16: by Batsap (new)

Batsap | 117 comments Wow, so many books being bought. =]
Depending on what money I've got, I'll usually buy about 5-10 books per month; but that doesn't even begin to take into account my comic book addiction...
It makes me feel so bad for the trees!

message 17: by Natalie (new)

Natalie | 2 comments Haha, yeah i used to buy 3-4 books a week, but i'm trying to cut it down a bit, it's sorta working...ish

message 18: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly I usually buy 10-25 books a month. Always second hand though or else I could never afford them!

message 19: by Sal (new)

Sal (itsjustsal) I work in a bookstore, so I do spend a lot of money in there but have limited to only the books I really want to read so I'd say about three books a week so as not to crowd up my room. Back when I had a better job and more money to spend I would spend $100 on books a week easily.

message 20: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany (herbtiff) I have tried to be good but I am pushing around 30 books a month.

message 21: by Angela (new)

Angela (angelida) | 1 comments I buy 3-4 a week on average, but this week I hit the bargain bin at Border's. I got 6 books at 3.99 each & when you buy 3 the third one is free! Plus I used my 33% off coupon on one regular priced book. So I went a little overboard this week, but I just couldn't resist the price!

message 22: by Ilean (new)

Ilean (ileanfulton) | 242 comments I am trying not to get more than 2 a month but when there is a bookfair and good prices on new books I want at Sam's Club- I went overboard for April with 10 books and 1 already for May, not inclucing books I bought for my daughter which I probaly will eventually read also, and my mother in law bought 4 books which also will be coming my way (2 have already). I need to quit being on the computer, watching tv , and house duties just to catch up on all I want to read!

message 23: by Audrey (new)

Audrey (audrey_g) | 13 comments Between two and three. Sometimes I check them out at the library first to make sure they worth the cost. Love shopping at online and local used books stores, especially local because I trade in my old books.

message 24: by CD (last edited May 03, 2010 02:11PM) (new)

CD | 170 comments Well, I have been alive a number of months slight more than a third of the number of books I have listed here at goodreads. That is some fraction of the books I own. The number I've purchased isn't the same as those I own as some are inherited. I cleaned out many duplicates, paperback versions, older or damaged beyond worth books many years ago, have read books I don't own (library or other borrowing), so on average -

I haven't a clue how many per month over the years other than it has to be a double digit number on average to have amassed the current collection.

For several years it has to be at least 5 new books a month. Several used on top of that.

message 25: by Clay (new)

Clay (ch53) | 6 comments I've been buying 5-20 hardcovers per day over the last month or so because I collect and am planning to open a small, barebones, bookstore.

Marissa "one of the crazy seven" Bacon | 4 comments In one month I bought eight books

I buy a lot of books with the intention of doing the same. But my book hoarding tendencies tend to get the best of me at times. =D

message 28: by Vicki (new)

Vicki Tavana (mamavik) | 16 comments I read a LOT! so my book purchases average 5-10 per month plus what I get from swapping, but most of my reading is rereading books I already have-thank goodness I enjoy doing that! I read 1-3 books per day (depending on the length and how many hours I work) since I read very fast (an average harlequin lasts about an hour if I sit and read continually)

You might try some of the book swapping sites; most are very little cost and I have found quick to be received. this way you get book for book instead of 50 cent for a book you will have to pay 3.50 and up to replace.

I recently got 46%off 2 new books by preordering them online-- this seems to be a great way to get books that you know you'll enjoy

I have found a way to get books I want without having to spend lots of money-I go through a lot of books since I have authors I collect, as well as books I have been wanting that are no longer in print- I joined a book swapping club online- it has helped tremendously and gives me something new to look forward to- getting new(to me) books in the mail. lol! I also am taking advantage of book clubs like Borders to preorder at a very good discount so a book that would have sold for $26 I only paid
$14.50 for. It makes me feel less guilty about the amount of money that goes for books instead of bills..

Hello Rene,

I always look to find books I wish to collect at the lowest cost to me. I don't know any book swap sources, could you get me pointed in the right direction?

There's paperbackswap.com. They may also have hardcover books available, depending on what other members have posted to trade. When you first sign up, you have to list 10 of your own books to trade, and you get 2 free credits. You can get one book per credit if I understand correctly. After that, you get a credit for every book that you send to someone else, or you can buy more credit. I just signed up earlier this week myself, and haven't used it much yet.

Clay (ch53) | 6 comments Thanks Michelle,

I am really looking to trade hardbacks, or trade paper for hardback. It's amazing when you learn to really shop what you can find.

Vicki Tavana (mamavik) | 16 comments Clay wrote: "Thanks Michelle,

Hi Clay; paperback swap lets you choose which you want whether paperback, hardback, audio or CD. I have been a member for a while, and really enjoy it- I have found books that I've been looking for a long time, although if it is readable I'll take it. haha when you look up a title or author it will list all forms available- if hb isn't listed you can wishlist it and if someone posts a hardback version they'll notify you by email that "your wish has been granted"

message 36: by Vicki (new)

Vicki Tavana (mamavik) | 16 comments it also exchanges 1 book for 1 book regardless whether paperback or hardback; the only cost to you is postage for mailing books to others, or buying pb money to buy book credits if you don't have enough available to get the book you want

message 37: by Kat (new)

Kat (goodbadawful) | 3 comments It varies for me. I love used bookstores, but we just moved to a new state and haven't found any good ones yet. I typically buy 3 or 4 books at a time. I rediscovered the library though, so my book buying has really slowed down.

message 38: by Clay (new)

Clay (ch53) | 6 comments A lot of the libraries have donor sales whereby one can buy really good hard back copies for $.50-$2.00. Check it out. Typically, there will be a Friend of the Library outlet somewhere in your area (FOLS).

message 39: by Ellen (new)

Ellen | 1 comments I buy about two books average each week. I love Halfprice, but never know what I'm going to find. I also tend to buy on Amazon, and when I do I always buy enough to make it $25 to cover shipping.

message 40: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly Last month I bought about 30 books....

message 41: by Clay (new)

Clay (ch53) | 6 comments Kimberly,

What kind of books are you buying?

message 42: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly I buy anything and everything except romance novels. I rarely buy those...not because I don't like them but I like Mysteries and Adventure novels more. The reasoN I was able to buy so many in May was because I buy mine all second hand for $2.00 at my favourite use bookstore and I can buy certain ones from the public library for $0.25 each =]

message 43: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly ^_^ Who are your favourite writers?

That's a great idea. Especially getting books at the library for so cheap. Thanks for sharing this!

message 45: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly I love Alexander McCall Smith, Clive Cussler, Dan Brown, Matthew Reilly and David Baldacci. I love their writing.

message 46: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly I adored Seven Deadly Wonders!! David Baldacci is kinda like Clive Cussler with a dash of Dan Brown. Check out his book The Camel Club (Camel Club, #1) by David Baldacci it's the first in his "oliver Stone" series.

message 47: by Rosalie (new)

Rosalie Sambuco I can recommend books by Vince Flynn or Brad Thor. They are somewhat similar to David Baldacci.

message 48: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly ^ I forgot about Vince Flynn being similar.

message 49: by Amy (new)

Amy Brobst (amydali86) | 9 comments I usually buy 5 or 6 books a month. I used to be worse- one book trip I bought 20 books.

message 50: by Fani *loves angst* (last edited Nov 11, 2010 10:00PM) (new)

Fani *loves angst* (fanip) I also buy about 5 to 7 books per month. On top of that, I buy 2 to 3 audiobooks per month.

Like Amydali, I used to buy more and I'm proud I've managed to control it somewhat now.
