This month the book is: A Girl’s Guide to Vampires by Katie MacAlister

A Girl's Guide to Vampires (Dark Ones, #1) by Katie MacAlister

Michelle and I are going to try to read one book that we both have each month. Everyone is welcome to join who wants to read that book. We will not keep track of if you “complete” it or not, that’s why it’s “unofficial.” If you’ve been meaning to read the same book, or would like to read the same book and then discuss it on this thread please feel free to join us! The more the merrier!

Carolyn F. I just read that! I'm reading book 2 in April.

Awesome! How did you like it?

message 4: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. It was pretty good. Her books aren't great, but they do have a lot of funny moments. She kinds of drew off of Christine Feehan's books, so one of the characters uses lines from Feehan's books which were funny. The two friends get in a lot of screwball Lucy/Ethyl stuff that you know don't happen to real people but are pretty funny anyway. I liked it enough that I want to read book 2.

Megan | 1285 comments Well that does sound promising. Hopefully the second book will be better than the first.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) I may try to join if I can find my copy.

LOL- I'm scared to ask how many physical books you have!

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) It's scary to me, as well. But they keep coming home with me. :)

message 9: by Megan (new)

Megan | 1285 comments That's not a bad thing!! :o)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) I already read this--but hey, I'm still willing to talk about it. (Er, I've also read books 2 through--er, nm. Lets just say that I've read a LOT of Katie's books.) :o)

message 12: by Valorie (new)

Valorie | 676 comments I've already read this book also, and found the female characters a little on the annoying side. It was worth the read but the second book was much better.

message 13: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) The heroines were a little annoying--but then, I've noticed that a LOT of writers are doing that now. Making the heroine anything from mildly to "lets hang her from her heels while setting her hair on fire and then getting REALLY nasty with her" drives you crazy with the desire to kill her annoying.

But maybe that's just me. One of my big complaints is with heroines that are "supposed" to be adults (25 and up) but act like they are 13 or 14, instead of adults.

message 14: by Megan (new)

Megan | 1285 comments That does sound annoying... I hope I get through this book in one piece!... Or should I say I hope the BOOK makes it through me reading it in one piece! ;o)

message 15: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The situations the girls get into were a little out there, but some were pretty funny. I kept thinking Joy should end up with Christian but liked the book overall. I'm reading book 2 this month and I keep hearing that it's better than the first and it has Christian in it.

message 16: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) oohhh Carolyn--yeah, book 2 is even better than book 1. lol, and you should start to read some of her other books too. The Corset Diaries (or is it Diary? Sorry, can't get my "add book/author" tab to work right now) is totally funny. Its not part of a series, but it is really good.

I have the Corset Diaries. I haven't read it yet, but I'm looking forward to it.

Michelle Gilmore | 3220 comments I just started A Girl's Guide to Vampires this evening. I've only made it through the first chapter so far; just judging by those first few pages, I expect it to be a pretty fun book to read.

message 19: by Valorie (new)

Valorie | 676 comments I just finished book 3, Sex, Lies and Vampires. Another good one!

message 20: by Megan (new)

Megan | 1285 comments *Sigh* I'm struggling with the first chapter... I don't know why... it's just not grabbing me. I want to quit sooooo bad..... I'll try to push through... but I'm not promising anything!!

The first book is definitely hard to get through. The female characters are so annoying. I have enjoyed the 2nd and 3rd books of the series though. Hope you make it through Megan!

Thanks Valorie! I'm going to try... I need a break already though (at the 3rd chapter)... so I'll read another one of my April challenge books and then try to get into it again. If I don't though... would it hurt the series too much if I did skip to the 2nd book of the series in the future?

Not too much, no. So if you just cant take it, I would move on to book 2.

Great! Exactly what I wanted to hear! If I can't finish it- I'll be sure to take your advice! THANKS!! :o)

Michelle Gilmore | 3220 comments With the exception of a few lines where I think the author may be trying too hard to get a laugh out of the reader, I'm still finding A Girl's Guide to Vampires interesting enough to keep reading. I'm just hoping that I don't come across "Gark" and "Jeezumcrow" too many more times while doing so. I mean, the jeezum crow I get, but I had to google "gark", and that just had me feeling old, lol!

message 26: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Gilmore | 3220 comments I finished A Girl's Guide to Vampires (Dark Ones, #1) by Katie MacAlister . It just wasn't my cup of tea after all. I don't want to ruin it for anyone who may still be planning on reading it, but as far as heroines go, I didn't care for Joy, or her sidekick Roxy at all. I ended up comparing the hero Raphael to the hero Drake in the Aisling Grey series, and Raphael just pales in comparison in my opinion. I get that this was supposed to be a humorous read, but the funny parts just didn't flow very well for me after a while.

message 27: by Megan (new)

Megan | 1285 comments I think it was supposed to be funnier than it really was. And for a chick-lit type book, I wasn't expecting it to be so long. I was SO turned off that I don't know if I can pick up any of the others in the series.

I enjoyed You Slay Me, book 1 in the Aisling Grey series. I think it just flows better than A Girl's Guide. The heroine is a little silly, her sidekick is a whole lot funnier, and the hero a whole lot sexier. I'd recommend giving it a try the next time you're in the mood for something light and funny. That or Undead and Unwed by Mary Janice Davidson.

message 29: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. I like her Aisling Grey and Silver Dragon series more too. Although I've only read the first book in the Dark Ones series, so I can't really judge it so far. The comedy was very slap stick, Lucy/Ethyl or 3 Stooges ish. That's not my cup of tea usually but I did find some of the dialogue funny. I liked Raphael but thought she was meant to be with Christian, although from reading the back of book #2 I'm wrong. I just don't know how you can read their thoughts as a true love, but not really be their true love. All in all, I enjoyed the book and plan on reading book #2.

message 30: by Megan (new)

Megan | 1285 comments I will have to give book 2 in the series a try some time. But, only after reading some good books. I think I'm in a bad book slump right now, 2 books I didn't like and now currently reading Blood Rose which is only okay. *Sigh* Hopefully the next book I chose will be better.
