B&N for my Nook. Haven't checked out any of the other sites, but I know that there are some out there. But I've only had my Nook for about 10 days now, and haven't even finished all the books that I have downloaded (or that my daughter downloaded).

Dee (austhokie) I buy from Ellora's Cave; Samhein (mybookstoreandmore); Bookstrand (Siren); Loose-ID and Captive Press

message 6: by Joyce (new)

Joyce (eternity21) I buy most of my eBooks on ereader.com. They have a wonderful selection and can be read on the computer, iPod touch, Nook, iPad . They also have program giving you some credit with most purchases.

There are some more sites like the public library, many books.com, harlequin.com (I love the nocturne series including the nocturne bites)

message 7: by new_user (new)

new_user | 1389 comments booksonboard.com, diesel-ebooks.com and fictionwise.com. Those are my main go-tos. Sometimes allromanceebooks.com too.

I use the ibook store, amazon, and http://ebookpie.com/

message 9: by Whitney (new)

Whitney (whitneyk) | 17 comments I read primarily on my Motorola Droid. I use ereader, Kobo, and Aldiko which uses allromanceebooks. All of these are pretty proficient. Although sometimes I can't get the books I want. A lot of books from series are missing.

Shelleyrae at Book'd Out | 145 comments Thanks for some new suggestions.
I use my ipod touch and have most of the apps, and use calibre as well so mostly nay format will work for me.

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

Which websites are Kindle friendly? I really hate converting books because the format gets messed up and it bugs me especially when I pay for it.

message 12: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) most websites have books available in the mobipocket (.prc) format that works on kindle without converting it. the only sites you need to stay clear of are those that use secure mobipocket (I know fictionwise is one of these) because that is DRM's and while there are some ways you can use it on your kindle, its not technically kosher

message 13: by Claudia (new)

Claudia (romantasygirl) | 20 comments I buy my ebooks mostly either on amazon for kindle or on ibooks (iTunes) for my iPod Touch and my iPad. Both works absolutely perfectly. The advantage of ibooks is that from many ebooks you can download excerpts first before buying them.

You can get an excerpt from Kindle too first before buying them. I love my kindle better than itunes as they accept my international cc card but with itunes i have to stock up on the cards.

message 15: by Katie (new)

Katie (skateanddonate) Only from Amazon. I read on my iPod Touch and until the latest updates the reading apps would only transfer books purchased via Amazon.

message 19: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) Amazon for my Kindle and Amazon or Kobo for my iPad apps. I can't buy from iBooks because it is not international.

message 20: by Mel (new)

Mel (soireb) | 61 comments same here, i buy all my ebooks from amazon so far (i have the kindle app for both my PC and iPhone);

Although i have downloaded a few free books from smashwords.com placed there by the own authors.

message 21: by Sheri (new)

Sheri Our public library has recently started loaning out ebooks. It's great!!

message 22: by Beverly (new)

Beverly (penguininflight) I have a Kobo Touch, and get all my books from their website (kobo.com)/desktop app. I've been really happy with all my purchases so far, and their site is easy to use.

Lisa264544 | 46 comments I have a Kindle and will buy from Amazon whenever possible. Otherwise, I will get books from the publishers website. Love my ebooks!

message 24: by Missyb (new)

Missyb | 493 comments I've only purchased e-book from B&N so far. I have borrowed from my local library. I live in the Rochester NY area, but found out from the lady at B&N who ran a seminar on borrowing e-books from the library, that if you live anywhere in NY state you can get a library card from the NY City library system that serves the 5 burroughs (Queens, Bronx, etc) and borrow e-books from that library. Their web site is nypl.org Maybe other states do something similiar, and the "big" city of your state rents to the rest of the state.

I've bought from all of them it will depend upon which ereader program you are running. epub is the most common and you can get almost any book through these stores in all version except Kobo which is strictly epub. Just check out the stores and you can figure out where you want to buy from. It also depends upon where you are from. I'm Canada so except for Kobo all the others are in US dollars and just have to be prepared to pay the exchange rate unless you can find the book your looking for on a website from where ever you are from. Good luck

I have found that the publishers of indie books usually will give you a good price for the books and I check each week the freebies in B&N...just in case something I plan on reading or something interesting is there and FREE! Otherwise I wait for a good price. There are so many good books out there!

Katya | 645 comments Beth wrote: "How many of these sites work with a nook?"

I have two nooks Beth and use both Smashwords and Fictionwise...as well as many other publisher websites.

don't forget to check for coupons or codes for smashwords or fictionwise before buying. I just do a google search for "fictionwise coupon" and usually get 20-60% off my purchase where Smashwords coupon search will bring up specific books which are marked down with a coupon code.

Michelle Scott (michellescottfiction) I recently found out that you can buy books here on GR, too. I haven't tried it yet, though.

Caguas, I think that only serves NYC. You have to find the library system that serves your area. Are you in Henrietta NY? Here is a link:

http://catalogplus.libraryweb.org/#se...

http://www.hpl.org/

You can also call your local library (or visit them) for info on how to obtain an online account with them. All you need, once you set up an account, is your library card and a pin number in order to log in and borrow ebooks directly from the library's website. :)

message 36: by Bridget (new)

Bridget Bowers (bridgetbowers) | 36 comments I've just recently started reading ebooks, I always love to hold a book in my hands. I've been very pleased with ebooks though, I was surprised.

I've been getting my books from Amazon and Smashwords. Both tend to have some great deals, which makes indulging more fun.

I had done that, too, and was thrilled to get so many books for free. Then all of a sudden, my books disappeared from my queue. I heard that there was a battle between Penguin Publishers and Overdrive (the software that distributes the library books), and I figured that's what happened to my books!

I still have a few on reserve, but it's taking quite a while to get them now :(

message 39: by Rebecca (new)

Bror (Abrar) (ab2y) | 2 comments Susan wrote: "What is a torrent site Michael?"

They are sites to download things for free so i think it's illegal , kind of anyway

message 42: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 2659 comments Mod
if its illegal or not depends on if the book (or music or movie) is in the Public Domain (meaning the copyright has expired or been allowed to expire.) If its in PD, its not illegal. Otherwise it is illegal.

I have to admit--if I visit one of those sites, I only download books that I own in dead tree (to quote my daughter) form. If I don't already own them (so have paid for them once already) I don't download them.
ds,

I learned it at the Monroe Ave Barnes & Noble (Pittsford Plaza) when I took a class on borrowing e-books from the library. I guess if you go to the NYC library website and sign up for a library card from them, then the rest should be about the same for renting e-books from them as it is for renting from the Monroe Country library system.

I live near Caguas1947, I'm in East Rochester about 15 minutes away, and I wouldn't bother with getting info from the library. It is confusing info from them. Go to Barnes & Noble and they'll help.

message 47: by Danielle (new)

Danielle I don't know about NY but here in Chicago the library ebook system is sort of a joke. If a new popular comes out the library system is going to get a copy for each library branch. For example when Drink Deep came out there were about 80 actual books available. Since the hold system is first come first serve no matter which branch I usually use I got my hands on copy about 5 weeks after the book came out. Even though I didn't get on the hold list the moment the book went in to the system. If they even got a copy of the ebook (I did not check for this book) it would be 2 copies at the most so if I wanted the ebook I would still be waiting to read it. I am going to continue to use the library for most of my books and use the gutenberg.org for the free ebooks I read when I am waiting for my library hold to come in. I have found there ebooks to be error free.

message 48: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Scott (michellescottfiction) I was invited to join a new group for Nook readers that lists free/cheap Nook books. I think you can find it if you search for 'Nook' in the groups.

That stinks. Since e-books take up no space in the library, and doesn't need an employee to check you out or shelf the book, you'd think they'd stock up on e-books and save themselves some money.
