Haha. Yay Beth, glad you kicked this off!

So I just have to say that I was totally lost with all the French? Anybody else as clueless as me? Granted it was really kind of sexy when Dante said it, but then again. It's Dante. :P

I really liked how Adrian really kind of gave us a glimpse into the paranormal world right after Heather. It's like two sides of the story. Heather is one of my favorite heroines too!

I have read the whole book(cause that's what I thought I was supposed to do...)but I promise : no spoilers!
To be honest, I was completely lost during the first 6 chapters.I had little to no idea of what was happening,din't quite get the story and who was who.Well OK, I understood Heather's role,obviously,but De Noir,E,Ronin and Dante are kinda blurry at the beginning.
I did French in school so I was mostly OK with the vocabulary, but I think there is a glossary or something like that at the end of the book that might help you,Ky :)

@ AtenRa lol you were supposed to read the whole book. :P This is just in case others havent' finished yet. I was kind of lost with all of the weird vocabulary going on. I kind of kept going "a what?" and "who" but it clicks after a while.

Lol. Ya I found the glossary. After I finished the whole thing. :P I was able to infer some of it and it turned out I was right! Haha! I remember SOME french. Some...

@Ky Since this is not a read along, I thought I was to read the whole book.But then I see "Chapters 1-6" and I was afraid I've missed something.Glad it's all cleared up!

@ AtenRa lolz! Hahaha! No sweat. It was kind of confusing. XD

The French drove me crazy. But I read it on Kindle, so I didn't know there was a glossary until the end. :)

@ Kindleicious I know right! I was just like "I KNOW SPANISH! NOT FRENCH!" There is a REASON I chose spanish over french for my second language! AH!

Kyleigh--HAHA, yep, me too. After I had to stop and google phrases the first few times, I just gave up.

@ Kindleicious Lol. Lucky enough I knew what mon ami and mon cher meant so since that was said about a bajillion times for the most part I was okay. :P

Well, Spanish and French are both Latin based languages, so if you know spanish, it's not so difficult to figure out what some French words mean.Or maybe that's just the super geek inside me talking :)

@ AtenRa lol no it's not. I noticed trends so I was kind of able to translate. :P

I agree with everyone, it was kind of confusing, but I know some french,(had to take it in school)so I kind of got the just, but when I didn't I googled as well Kindlelicious!

How is everyone liking the book being written in third person?
Personally, I like books written in first person. But I like to get all angles of the characters as well, so if I can get it in first person(from more than one character) or in third person, either way works.
Both ways are great, but I'm more of a fan for books in first person perspective.. Although for this book, third person works.

@ Natasha I also like 1st person better, but I don't mind 3rd person as long as it's done well. And I really enjoyed getting inside all of the different characters heads. So I didn't mind too much.

1st person narration is preferable, I think, because you can connect fully with the main character.Here I think there is no main character, at least as main characters are seen in other books,for example a girl,some friends and her boyfriend and that's it.A Rush Of Wings has a lot of pivotal characters without which the story could not unravel.So, I think it would not have worked had it been in 1st person, because the reader needs to learn loads of info, which can only be done if the narration is from different POVs.

I actually prefer 3rd person in most cases because I like getting all the different POVs. But I agree that there is less of a connection with the characters if not written in 1st person.

I finished this book a few weeks ago so I don't know exactly what happens in chapters 1-6 but one think that bugged me was how much it is brought up about Dante's looks. Yes, I know the draw is more than his physical appearance but I felt like it was mentioned too much.

hmm i didn't really mind the french i mean its not like it was used in a full sentence and the whole Dante looks didn't also i mean isn't that the case in most books nowadays the hotness of a preferable guy are always said over and over again and even though he was described as sexy he didn't come across to me as so at all, the only thing up till now that annoyed me was the threesome creepy thing going on with Gina. jay and Dante like what the frick? just ew

Although I have read A rush of wings it was several months ago, so I am going to go and buy a copy today, so I can catch up. I do own In the blood and Beneath the skin.
Anyway, this is one of my favorite series ever. I did find it hard to read, because I felt like it played on my emotions. I always felt drained after reading them.
I had to use the glossary a bit, as I pretty much don't know any French at all. Mon ami and mon cher were about the only two I actually understood.

first person is good, like you said, you connect with the main character, but third person you get to know all the characters. I don't think these books would work in first person.

@ Aly LOL! Okay so the fact that Dante kisses people instead of a handshake was a little creepy. I mean my friend hugs EVERYONE she meets. I'd get hugged at least 3 times a day just randomly. She likes giving hugs. Dante apparently likes giving kisses.

I felt that Dante's looks were heavily featured at first, but as the story progressed I liked how his sense of self was shown. He's deeply caring of his friends and loved ones and has a strong sense of protectiveness. As the story progressed, his looks were mentioned less. Overall though I thought it was okay. A little over mentioned but it had okay balance.

Yes I do agree that as the story went on I did get to see more of Dante. I was just commenting on what I thought for chapters 1-6 :-)

i felt that it was important to show how in awe every one is with his looks because it bothers him the way people look at his looks and don't see him.. but i love Dante so im a a bit partial.. lol

Interesting to see that you guys think Dante's looks are mentioned a lot, because I really don't.I mean, compared to other books where you get sick of reading what a hunk a guy is.But with Dante I didn't get that.And all the peripheral action, the crowd parting so he can walk through, everybody wanting to be near him,I think it is surely because of how he looks, but also because of the way he carries himself and because of a certain effect he seems to have on people, being nightkind and all.And let's forget he is also a well known rock/goth star!

@ Natasha... I am a fan of first and third person! What I like about third is like you said... different perspectives!=)

I read the entire book as well a while ago but I am rereading now along with you all!=)

@ AtenRa in regards to Dante's looks in the book- I am inclined to agree!=)

I am glad we are dividing it down by chapters because I didn't get a chance to read it in advance :) So I have only read the first 6 chapters. I am somewhat lost and yes, Dante's looks are mentioned far to much (at least once he comes into the picture). I like Heather (so far) she seems to show empathy but do her job really well. I can honestly say at this point I don't know if I am reading a mystery/thriller or urban fantasy (I am going to guess a combo). Where I really got lost was chapter 6 and the sudden switch to the people in the office. I am sure that this will be explained but I really don't know who they are (other than remind me of Watchers) and why they would let E continue killing just to see how/why he does it. So far it is good :)

So from the one person who didn't read it in advance thanks for breaking it down by chapters :)

@Felicia I totally agree,it's pretty confusing at the beginning.I thought it was just me, but now I'm "glad" to see that everyone is a bit confused.Do not worry, though, everything will be explained,especially after the first half.

Hey everyone! Thanks for joining in on the discussions:) Sorry I'm a little late. Well I completely agree with being a little confused at the beginning. I had to stop and reread it just to make sure I wasn't tired or something,lol. I agrees with AthenRa and Chas about Dante's looks though. Good point:) I didn't mind the French too much and third person narration was not so bad either actually I kind of really liked it. I didn't finish the book yet but I'm excited to see what happens:)

@ No one in particular: How was it confusing? I don't remember exactly what clued me into the whole Johanna thing, but when the story switched over to her it just clicked in my head "OH! That's who they were talking about." Of course I can't remember why that clicked for me at the moment...

@Felicia: I'm right there with you! I wasn't able to read this in advance either, so I'm definitely glad that we're doing this by chapters.:)

I think for me it is a little confusing so far in that they are switching between so many POV. It's not the third person or the french(although that is a little bothersome)so much as the number of people that keep popping up. I'm trying to hold off on any judgments just yet though because I'm hoping that the story will start making a little more sense.

@Jennifer Exactly. Not having read the rest of the book yet, it was a whole bunch of characters, their motives, how do they connect (that I am still not sure of), and all of that crammed into the beginning. It is not off-putting at all but it is a little hard to keep straight (should say the beginning of nightwalkers by j. andersen was the same for me and I ended up LOVING that book). I don't mind the french/cajun, in fact I find it charming so far and while third person isn't my favorite, I don't mind it either if it is well done.

So far I am enjoying it even if I am a tad confused :)

I'm a little late to the party, but I finally made it!

The French doesn't bother me that much. I know basic French and could kinda pick up what was meant. Plus I love people who speak English, but sprinkle it with words from another language.

I don't mind 3rd person POV, though I find it's a little more revealing that 1st person, which often is okay. But not too fond when it starts giving away too much to the read, taking away from the main characters 'own discovery' you would normally follow in 1st person.

I'm glad I'm not the only one feeling lost in these first couple of chapters. I feel a little disorientated. I feel there's something I've missed? I'm hoping things will start making sense in the next couple of chapters.

Any one else surprised that we find out that Dante is a vampire in the first couple of chapters when Heather thinks he's just some goth kind?

I'm intrigued by Heather's back story too - her dad? Her sister? All interesting!

@ Beth well of course you don't mind the French, you live in Canada. :P JK! Sorry I will forever be making Canadian jokes to you. Even though you faux Canadian. XD

I know what ya mean though. I was really kind of shocked that Dante being a vampire was so soon. I was like, oh well... okay then. But it works. I feel that you had to know early on to fully understand the complex workings of the paranormal side of the world. It wasn't written to be all mysterious, and was rather straight forward. I'm glad the focus was more on discovering who the serial killer was than being all hung up on the fact that "OMG! VAMPIRES EXIST! *GASP*"

I just thought we'd follow Heather through the beginning of the book, which when they switched it up to Dante I was surprised. I kinda wanted to see things build up from Heather's POV.

The whole serial killer thing has sucked me in, I'm liking this aspect of the book. I know what you mean about the whole *ohmigod vampires exist!* thing *rolls eyes*, it's refreshing to read a book where it's not thrown at you in the first couple of pages.

I'm just afraid I'm going to lose track of who all these people are as they're being introduced.

@ Beth The Faux Canadian (it is now your title) Haha! Don't worry. It may seem like a lot now, but there's only like 5 total POV's. Okay... maybe that was a lie there. So there's probably more than 7 but they all pertain to each other for the most part. Like Lucian and Dante and Von. They're all characters who are around each other so it's not overwhelming.

@KY & Beth.....The Faux Canadian,lol! That's funny. I have now gotten use to the many POV's going on. At first confused but def now I'm keeping up:)Thank god! LOL! I knew I could do it;) I'm hyper as well had some tea and pretty much cannot sleep. *shaking my head* Yeah I know.

I'm looking forward to moving on with this book, I'm intrigued to see what kind of twist Phoenix's vampires have. As something tells me they're not the run of the mill vamps! I need to get back to reading! I'm running behind majorly!

@ Steph Hahaha! It's okay. I got home after a total disaster of a night at work and was suddenly hyper as hell. I had two boiled eggs because I was starving!

@Beth Yeah I can't wait to see what the rest of the book brings either. I def need to read I so behind as well. Thank god for tea I can speed read now,lol!

@ AtenRa ah! I'm sorry! Greece right? What is that 8 hour time difference? Sorry! :( I'm usually awake till 2 in the morning so I guess it would be early morning for you. Hmm.

steph my tea loving comrade :D and trust me atenra i know about time differences which is why im normally awake for these girls to chat here when its 5am and for them its like 11pm *sigh* but yes i jsut have to or id miss out on all the fun to!

Lily--yep the beginning had a way of making you think that. I was like dang 2nd book in the series LOL Except that it wasn't :)
